crunkbong is looking for testers

Current version: 0.7.11

C r U n K b O n G
Self-educate.  Operate.  Evacuate.

About crunkbong:
https://github.com/souperdoupe/crunkbong/wiki

Many Linux projects feature beautiful desktop backgrounds, polished user interfaces, and extensive, easy-to-use software. Screenshots boast their feature-rich userspace, which rivals commercial operating systems' refined aesthetics. They are attractive, well-known, and highly praised.

Crunkbong is not one of them.

Crunkbong is a switchblade for Linux: it does one thing really well. You won't always need to use one. However, when the right time comes, you'll be glad you had it. Also, it's fairly small, and meant to be kept on hand for whenever a need arises.

I wanted to construct a user experience based on the same framework, one that is small (~300mb), can fit in your pocket (on a USB drive), and used for a specific purpose: to get information from point-A to point-B, whether locally or across a network. (...)

Crunkbong is a means to accomplishing several specific ends with no commitment: you perform your task, and go back to the real world.

crunkbong utils: https://github.com/souperdoupe/crunkbong

crunkbong is based on amd64.  If there is a request for 32-bit (i686), I'll build one from scratch.

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

The 'other language' boot option doesn't work. The boot option, lang=xx_XX where xx and XX are your chosen country code only works with a custom script (refracta-lang) that is specifically for lightdm. If you want to change language, change that option to locales=xx_XX.UTF-8 keyboard-layouts=xx. NOTE: That probably won't work right in jessie. It does work in ascii, probably because of the newer version of live-boot and live-config.

I didn't get much beyond booting it. It's a little sparse for my taste, and I'm kinda lost without completion. (Is there a way? It's not the tab key.) Oh, never mind. I found bash. Is there an apps menu hiding somewhere?

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

Thanks for testing!

I'll test the language option you used when I get home tonight.  I imagine a simple transition to ascii, when it matures (I know, its current state is probably fine), will solve much of the language grief.

I think I'll also switch to bash as the default shell, or give the user an option upon login.

I'm working on a pipemenu for openbox.  miyo had an interesting way of approaching that, and I'm playing around with options sans-unnecessary-dependencies and the ilk.

Short answer: I just needed a name.
Less-short answer: it's a nonsense quasi-homonym for "crunchbang."

I used crunchbang for about three years.  A few years ago -- when Newborough made the official announcement to call it quits, but before BunsenLabs chimed in -- I considered all options, and deterimined to just follow Newborough's footsteps and make my own iteration in its spirit, but with some other features I find really useful.

The name was always a placeholder, but I never found a need to change it.  The immature teenager in me looks forward to a future where people seriously announce absurd release names like "Crunkbong 1.0 (Bingbong)".

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

^ good luck with it, what would be your code release naming schemes? Crunchbang followed the muppets , bunsenlabs is following the periodic table in regards to gasses and metals i think. I have a feeling you may like a type genus in the weed species, first one perhaps skunk wink

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

crunkbong 0.7.9 is released!
https://sourceforge.net/projects/crunkb … o/download

Changelog, 4/20/2018:
-Edited the openbox right-click menu for common gui apps.  crunkbong doesn't ship with many gui apps at all, so the featured ones are really the most important imo.  I decided to stick with this method because traditional menus and approaches required more dependencies -- and storage space -- than desired.  It isn't worth it since most of the apps are cli-based.
-Switched the default shell back to bash.  I'll probably end up changing it back to ksh once I figure out sensible keybindings/completion.
-Added a readme file for common apps/scripts.  Most of it is console-based, so this is more of a quick overview.
-Separated the proprietary network firmware to .debs in a folder.  This was a direct inspiration from refracta (thanks, fsmithred).
-Added xfe as the primary file manager.  Minus all the ridiculous dependencies.
-Added a line in .xinitrc to give dwm a small tray with battery, date, and time.  Thanks to Head_on_a_Stick.

Works in progress:
-Still looking for the leanest menu solution known to man.
-Beginning migration to ascii
-Still open to testers' advice and suggestions.

@Panopticon: I'll certainly take that into consideration XD  the irony is that my friend had the same idea when we first started this.
@wdq: would you mind sharing your strategies for keeping ram usage that low?

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

crunkbong 0.7.10 is ready!
https://sourceforge.net/projects/crunkb … p_redirect

Changelog, 5/09/2018:
-Updated kernel.  The jessie-security kernel is now replaced with liquorix 4.16.  The kernel is not only debloated, but also uses the actual KPTI patches, which mitigate recent microcode exploits, rather than the ones backported for jessie/jessie and ascii/stretch (kernels< 4.14.14).  Once crunkbong migrates to Devuan ASCII, I will consider if it's best to continue using liquorix, or just the ascii-backports kernel, least of all because it bumped the image size by about 40mb.  Also, thanks to fsmithred (again) for help in using recent kernels in jessie smile
-Added tcptrack.  top-like network monitor.  Unlike its alternatives, instead of keeping a log of all the connections, it'll just show information in realtime, and discard it after the connection closes.
-Switched wiki.  I like Github's better than SF's.  https://github.com/souperdoupe/crunkbong/wiki

Thanks!  crunkbong is currently 64-bit only, so that sounds perfect.  Let me know what you think big_smile

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

I think I have an actual spare hard drive around here someplace that might provide a good install for crunkbong. I am always looking for something fun.

Currently running hardware includes a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

Since I am not much of a tester, would be really nice to have a DE capture of crunkbong in action.   Hope one pops up soon.  smile

Yeah.  That's what I meant.

Thanks.  But I was wanting to see the first boot default without "personalization".  Oh well, my fault for not being clear about it . . .

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

i didnt personalise the de actually-- its very plain!

https://i.imgur.com/QhJWPPw.png

so that includes the menu-- though without the menu, its just a solid colour (the one shown here) and a black bar at the bottom with the clock.

if this is for an article it should probably be redone-- thats possible.

but most of the features until you open up the menu are a plain rectangle that takes up most of the screen, and one more at the bottom, all black, with clock. if theres something else youd like, just describe it.

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

Sup guys,

@golinux: I'll get some screens and desktop footage tomorrow.

@fig: Thanks for testing!  The default is an openbox session with tint2.  it boots to either openbox-session or dwm, and either can be defined in ~/.xinitrc. I thought I wrote that in the documentation.

The idea (also documented) is that most of the real features are console or terminal-oriented.  There is a reason the GUI is lackluster -- and optional.

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

hey, i try to tell people that about fig os too. but icewm could look a lot better than ive made it so far-- and crunkbong already does look good!

im interested in making the console easier to learn and more fun to use, so we have some common interests. EDIT: a minor offer of free software is made here: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=2081

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

fig, it might have been "cleaner" to start a new thread about your stuff where it could grow and just link to it here.  Maybe you'd consider doing that so it doesn't get all mixed up in the crunkbong discussion . . .

there were certainly some pretty good reasons i didnt consider that option, but now that you mention it-- not the worst idea!

Re: crunkbong is looking for testers

crunkbong 0.7.11
Download here

As requested, here are some screenshots and two videos:
https://github.com/souperdoupe/crunkbon … creenshots

Changelog, 05/20/2018:
-Repackaged dwm-6.0 from source.  I just changed the theme for this round.  I figure it'll make it easier to patch and upgrade for future editions.
-Added pciutils and usbutils.  Seriously, I can't believe I forgot those.
-Added geany and leafpad.  See above.
-Changed the dwm ctrl+shift+enter keybinding to launch urxvt instead of xterm.  Thank god.
-Actually installed surf.  I've been trying to compile surf2 in jessie to no avail, so I think I'll just save it for the ASCII release.

@figdev: I would prefer discussing figos in a figos thread, and crunkbong in a crunkbong thread, just for clarity's sake.  (It will make it easier to remember where I read certain comments or ideas.)  Also, I'll email you no later than Wednesday about your query; this week is going to be busy af for me.  Feel free to shoot me one anytime.

Ha!  They're going to make me download it!!

View Raw

(Sorry about that, but we can’t show files that are this big right now.)

Thanks for doing that.  Watched the whole thing. That was just what I was looking for.  Well done!  Unfortunately, it went by in quadruple speed!   If that was in real time, you must have some roadrunner genes!!!
