re: Void Linux, please see:

https://unixdigest.com/articles/some-of-the-great-gnu-linux-distributions.html#void
specifically of note:

From a technical perspective, Void Linux is another great Linux distribution, but if you seek out Void Linux because you want a Linux distribution without systemd, you need to know that the Void Linux project is not hostile towards systemd. They actually used to have systemd, but removed it only because systemd doesn't support Musl. However, from what I understand, there are no future plans of going back to systemd.

also this as well:

still we must always consider the writing on the wall:

#107 Re: Installation » "the desktop file refractainstaller.desktop is in an ..." » 2025-08-15 05:31:50

my Beowulf desktop-live dvd works correctly and desktop directory shows:

-rwxrwxr-x 1 devuan devuan 244 Oct 18 2019 refractainstaller.desktop

my Chimaera desktop-live dvd works correctly and desktop directory shows:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 devuan devuan 253 Jul 16 2021 refractainstaller.desktop

the background filename change added the extra size

my Daedalus desktop-live usb exhibits OP OT

don't have time for digging deeper ATM

edit: more experimenting

note: to access the "Launcher" tab, right-click on the desktop icon and select "Properties"
(naturally only "launchers" have that tab in addition to the normal "General" "Emblems" and "Permissions" tabs)

starting in Daedalus the launcher has two additional settings under "Security:"
a checkbox for "Allow this file to run as a .desktop file"
and a checkbox for "Set this file as trusted"

my Daedalus desktop-live usb has three .desktop launchers "Install Devuan" "SMALLER FONTS" and "LARGER FONTS" and all three required the box to be checkmarked/selected for "Set this file as trusted" to operate as they had previously on Chimaera and Beowulf

hope this helps

kicking the weeds a few days ago came across this good snippet from:
https://starbreaker.org/grimoire/entries/i-want-my-bsd/index.html

If I learned anything, it was the following:

GNU/Linux is mainly for people who dislike Microsoft and corporate Unix.
GNU/Linux + systemd is mainly for people who loathe Microsoft but miss Windows.
macOS is for people who dislike Windows and are OK with throwing money at problems.
The BSDs are for people who actually like Unix.
I’m not hardcore enough for Plan 9, and that’s probably OK.

^^^@chris2be8 and @all

That is why any sensitive data should *always* be encrypted before being stored on any system you do not *fully* control. And *really* sensitive data should not even leave your systems, even encrypted, without a *good* reason.

*Fully*
*Always*
*Really*
*Good*

never bought anything canon again

(full disclosure, i have experimented with canon stuff that was thrown out in the rubbish by other poor souls)

it is important to understand that with just the last few years of ai/llm/etc related _world_wide_web_ scraping, along with all the additional _internet_traffic_harvesting_and_storage_

it is already all in the _wrong_ hands...

imagine what the planet would be like today if ALL the humans on the ENTIRE planet lived like the americans(mostly referring to the _earth_destroying_level_of_consumerism_ with a side-dish of several hundred years of global murder and mayhem)

@all

please see both the article as well as the comments:

https://www.techdirt.com/2025/07/14/tackling-the-ai-bots-that-threaten-to-overwhelm-the-open-web/

Proxies for Bots / Global Proxy Networks

do a quick search for “proxies for bots” and a hypothesis develops where hundreds of millions of individual consumers/users get “free” internet access simply for willingly being an active part of a global proxy network. not sure how cloudflare or anyone will be able to distinguish quasi-random proxy-networks from naturally occurring web traffic. definitely a race to the bottom nevertheless.

would expect to see more of these types of apps:
