No problems of any kind then nor ever since. What on earth are you talking about? AMD v's intel is a non-starter here, so I'm marking this SOLVED.

I had never had "something does not work" on pure Intel. But I had to compile some kernel modules for amd and amd graphics.

I've a problem with opensnitch-ui. Does not matter if service (opensnitchd daemon) is running or not opensnitch-ui gives this error: Waiting for thread pool to idle before forking

The same error is for opensnitch 1.6.9-3 from excalibur's repo and for deb packages from official github, version 1.8.0-1

ChatGPT advises to purge python3-grpcio version 1.51.1-6 and to install grpcio==1.41.0 protobuf==3.20.0. But current version of python3-grpcio in excalibur as well as in ceres) even in daedalus it's 1.51.1-3. So it makes no sense for me and opensnitch is running around one year on another machine with excalibur (it was test and now stable with constant updates).

How can I force opensnitch to work?

#55 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Is it Possible to Run Devuan on an intel architecture? » 2026-01-07 23:26:14

Intel runs everything. The problems starts when some AMDs are in use on Linux.

dpkg -l | grep runit
ii live-config-runit 11.0.3+nmu1devuan1 all Live System Configuration Components (runit backend)

ii runit-services 0.9.1 all UNIX init scheme with service supervision (services)

I've created runit service for gdm3 and started it, successfully started but = nothing
Then I've remove runit service and added to default (with sysvinit) gdm3 and started it again but = nothing

Running

gdm3 as root in terminal

gives black screen, no control and no other tty.

# dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

  returns nothing as well.

root@host:/home/userr# update-rc.d gdm3 defaults
root@host:/home/userr# service gdm3 start
gdm3: disabled

Does it mean that gdm3 is broken?

If I got it right, devuan has no runit support. It' s a GMO of runit for boot and sysvinit for service, right?

#57 Installation » Runit » 2026-01-07 21:39:42

Does runit is automatic in Devuan like sysvinit and openrc?
I mean that when I install devuan with sysvinit the services are automatically installed with packages. The same with openrc with one exception - the boot is still with sysvinit and the service control is with openrc, so there is no real openrc in Devuan. Right?

What' s about runit?

I've just installed new devuan excalibur (v 6.1) from netinstall. I've added gdm3 and surprise, there are no services in the system. Gdm3 does not start. Only dbus, elogind and networkmanager are started. Where are other services? Does it mean that every package that requires service will not work?

1 Try to assign  hotkey to xfce4-popup-whiskermenu. If it's not present install it.
2 Strange. Disabling power for display screensaver etc is usually enough.
7 Are we ever gonna have fractional scaling in xfce without blur? - Not now, not in X11 xfce
9 I believe it's linked with pipewire settings not with xfce

If you install Devuan from live iso (XFCE) you get precooked XFCE  which is much better cooked than the default one instaled via tasksel or apt.

#61 Re: Devuan Derivatives » New Vendefoul Wolf based on latest Devuan Excalibur » 2025-12-12 00:26:52

I was trying out kde plasma a few weeks ago on a vm and had the same issue.
I had to import the default settings in window keyboard shortcuts or something.
It was just a case of clicking the import button and the defaults filled in automatically.

Yes. I restored the default behaviour. Now Alt+Tab works but the problem is that this require manual intervention.

One more issue I've found in this distro: "no touchpad found". Touchpad works somehow (no 2 finger click or similar just very basic usage) but cannot be configured. xserver-xlibre-input-libinput and xserver-xlibre-input-synaptics are installed sad

#62 Re: Devuan Derivatives » New Vendefoul Wolf based on latest Devuan Excalibur » 2025-12-11 23:27:08

New discovery - in KDE session Alt+Tab does not work as expected.

#63 Re: Devuan Derivatives » New Vendefoul Wolf based on latest Devuan Excalibur » 2025-12-11 19:52:41

Continue to test.

So, the first issue - encrypted install is broken.
The second one - "lobo" user name appears after each restart in login field of SDDM.
The third issue - screen capture utility seems not to appear after "print screen" key is pressed.

Not an issue just a point of attention. 25% of OnlyOffice is bought by VK (VK ~ FSB, former KGB in Russia) It's not an issue if it does not connect to internet smile, just a matter of choice.

#64 Re: Devuan Derivatives » New Vendefoul Wolf based on latest Devuan Excalibur » 2025-12-10 23:40:06

I've tested it. Calamares encrypted install is broken. I've tested it with root encrypted and got initramfs commandline from grub.

If you REALLY want immutable, burn your favorite distro to a DVD and run it live. Maybe with a persistence partition on metal/ssd.

good luck with updates smile

#66 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] Question, about immutable distros » 2025-12-09 13:12:43

What do they call "immutable distro" is just the system where YOUR ACCESS to it is LIMITED but you can write any malware e.g. in /home.

If you want really immutable distro you can install and configure bilibop from devuan's repo.

#67 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Recommend a Hypervisor ? » 2025-12-05 18:31:41

It isn't. It's just a pain in the arse to package for and maintain in debian. "crap" is an assumption from those too lazy to investigate why it was dropped from the repos, a "sour grapes" justification from those too inept to work around that removal, or...

But it's maintained by mx-linux team.

so I've to use
vo=gpu-next
hwdec=vaapi
gpu-api=opengl

#70 Re: Documentation » How to use the Init system? » 2025-11-24 23:59:45

When I install a new distro I typically run 'sudo lsof -i' to see what is [Listening] and work to remove any potentially vulnerable network aware applications.

I'm struggling to learn how the init system works. A small guide on how to use the Devuan init for managing daemons would be nice for the following actions:

Do I need to know about runlevels for daemons?
How to Start a service:
How to stop a service:
How to disable a service:
How to enable a service:

What is the correct procedure to follow before 'sudo apt remove <package>' that also has a service module?

Yep, most people here do not like to use ai too much ... but ... you can try to ask ai to get some answers.

@fsmithred, I mean that I've tried 'devuan_excalibur_6.0-preview-2025-05-24_1235_amd64_desktop-live.iso', and refractainstaller was unhelpful, even after installing refracta on the live system. Perhaps refractainstaller works with an already-installed Excalibur, but I haven't tested it. However, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with the original ISO.

#74 Re: Installation » Fresh install vs dist-upgrade for next release » 2025-07-21 18:57:21

I want to use tune2fs to tune an encrypted ext4 home partition that was created by refractainstaller. Can I decrypt the partition without mounting it? If so, how would I do that?

cryptsetup open /dev/nvme0n...  and you can tune2fs your ext4, or what do you mean?

#75 Re: Installation » Fresh install vs dist-upgrade for next release » 2025-07-21 17:16:32

@fsmithred  thanks

but it seems refractainstaller is not yet ready for excalibur sad
