Hi fsmithred, it is not a new problem
it exists since November 2023 and attacks now NEW installations of Devuan with own Devuan binaries.
in my opinion to much developers does NEVER install any more really some linux and want to do all in qemu or other virtualization producing, I am sorry, totally weak conclusions!
this is the reason, why I always install in a real partition. I install JustX, but I have a authentic result.
I did give above a link which (Devuan) official micro installer I did use and a -> code <- line with the stuff.
so it is easy to REALLY control!
@fsmithred: I, myself, never install refractasnapshot-gui or refractainstaller-gui. they are in my installations only if in the complete set of the installation (refracta linux etc.). but I like command line activity! it is so clear...
puppy linux did initially be "snapshoted" with only a few step command line Iso lang Puppy linux did only use one squashed big file. it was usual for certain (not only I) to do that frequently. It was also possible in some other little distributions.
actually one approach can be that one: https://arpinux.developpez.com/construi … ve-debian/
Than very much for your intense activity at this field dear fsmithred! You did save a lot of time of your users and make that really accessible for all (Exton is right explaining: can do a child!).
@stargate-sg1-cheyen: I suppose we did speak about the same (see the titel of the page pointed by your 1st link ( an Experimental Linux) It is what I did say in my last message.
I am not happy with EasyOS: no 32 bit version any more and heavy, heavy!
it is the wrong way! more than 100 years ago did e-cars also had appreciate and because of different questions, they were no success and it was right so.
in all parts of the world win the desertification new surfaces and has plenty sun to produce H2 this would be a more intelligent use of the resources of the world and would permit to other poor countries deals (surface and security for money!)
but we also have to reduce the weight of cars and to limit the speed of them! we have to prefer one-person-plus-one-child cars against those terrible SUV's being in mode since 2000!
think please about that: Germany, the country having attacked the others several times and thus created the military consumption of steel and having the responsibility of the greenhouse effects
has YET NO speed limit and drive effective with Porsche, BMW, etc unresponsible speeds...
for THIS REASON did the humanity never learn to consider how precious is the energy for us all and for the next generations!
when the Martians arrive on earth, they will be terrified of our stupidity
I drive 1100 km/month = 13200 km/y
bicycle, at 78 y.
My son, at 40 y (he is physician, has of course driving license (for cars (but also for big river boats!)), did never buy a car and go to the hospital (4 .. 7 km one way, often more than ones / day if to much patients etc.) always with bicycle.
Completely stupid person continue to use car on distances where a bicycle does easily the same!
I will now complete my installation with the absolutely minimal KDE base stuff
(and mplayer without GUI! My purpose is to look my sport workout videos as (https://ssyoutube.comwatch?v=WA_bBLEhVRM for ex.) in mplayer using the command line in sakura as I can so add the right parameter. But I will that KDE memorise the position where I am in the work out. This works well in exarch (arch KDE von http://extix.se)!
which packages are to install in Devuan and which settings are needing in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d ?
(compared with Lubuntu 16.04 (Lubuntu just before Ubuntu did abandonate i386 as well as the real -> ubuntu minimal <- ), there where a lot off settings in apt.conf.d!!!)
work correctly (ecepted the iso build in refractasnapshot).
I did install for amd64 with the mini net install Iso (less than 100 MB) only the last option in tasksel and after that
su -
sudo refractainstaller-base refractasnapshot-base xorg menu jwm slim ranger l3afpad sakura links2 didiwiki
(I participe now to the forum using links2!)
all works without to have to do somewhat more
excepted ranger: it is not taken in consideration by -> menu <-
(as l3afpad, but menu offers xedit and xedit is present (including man xedit; xcalc is also present in the menu!).
recommended changes:
- add perhaps the package xfce4-appfinder
- and introduce on top (after -> Terminal -< in /etc/jwm/system.jwmrc
- change this line so in /etc/jwm/system.jwmrc
<Background type="image">/usr/share/slim/themes/default/background.jpg</Background>
to get the same picture as slim uses.
didiwiki works in links2 (in graphic or without xorg etc. in "not graphic linux" and can write bold, underlined and italic but you need -> cups <- to print out!) and save it's documents as simple text files (but in his hidden ~/.didiwiki where you have to search then! didiwiki can handle with some picture, see it's -> help <-! it can handle (very well and simple with table and can use complexe fonts like Tamil, Korean etc... To write use where needing https://input.king !
how can I now make a snapshot? what is wrong (probably in the actual devuan binary package from refracta)?
actually my knowledge resources on this topic can be resumed to those links:
https://arpinux.developpez.com/construi … ve-debian/
https://forum-debian.fr/viewtopic.php?t=879
as I did explain here:
I'm not sure I understand what you want to do. If you want to change the contents of a live-iso, the easiest way is to install it into a VM, make the changes you want, and then make a new snapshot.
A less easy method is to mount the iso, mount filesystem.squashfs, copy both, chroot the filesystem and make the changes, re-squash the filesystem and then use xorriso (or other iso software) to make the new iso file.

Hi fsmithred
thank you for your help!
I use this way but it is very long.
Long time, I was not a friend of USB sticks because in 90 % of the tries they did not do what I did expect!
Until I read and discover in an helping answer that
dd
make it always easy if you format correctly the stick, and that is
- until 4 GB: fat 16 + boot flag
- higher: fat 32 + boot flag
and since I know that I did never more had some stick which not goes correctly! The result is:
I did buy a lot of cheap FAST mini USB cards (but not micro! for that reason they where really cheap, extremely cheap)...
But usb cards have a terrible propriety: they are (about all) black and have no writing field but an sticker. I you try to bring the sticker away, the surface become bad and you are not certain you can't damage the card reader... You can't not really note somewhat clear on the surface of an USB card to recognize it later!
And I am in this situation! My problem with the bad kernel was so, that I did make snapshots and snapshots and snapshots and die save then on cards to test then. And I can not any more see which one are good and which one are bad.
But I need cards again as the kernels, today, works again properly also on my PC's to restart my activity. So I will transfer per CLI the content of cards into ISO's as I don't have those ISO's as ISO files any more on the HD.
I come out a long time (4..5 months), where it was not possible any more for me to use Devuan / Devuan derivatives but had to continue my activities!
The result was: I had no choice! I was needing to look the other girls and test then for ability to be used! I was not had fidelity any more and have rediscover Ubuntu, gentoo and arch (with the help of Exton from http://extix.se, thank you very much, dear Exton, for your excellent works!). extix.se is a good periscope to look for the other girls without toil and fast!
I have especially a fantastic KDE linux 64 bit on arch I would like, now, to continue to nurse it!
And some other based on Gentoo (also KDE but not so small at the end...).
How to make some snapshot with then and possibly add refractainstaller?

easy linux was named with an other name in the past... the branch is very old and is only an experimentation's field von BK since BK does not continue to consider himself as the chief (and responsible) of Puppy Linux editions of Puppy linux or of authors from the high quantity of derivatives...
I find, that the refractasnapshot is really a fantastic evolution! I don't know if other people appreciate really with progress it is for us! I participate to the movement "Puppy linux" since early 2004. At the begin, it was not possible to save somewhat, nothing excepted on the email server from MS with hotmail! And then, step after step came save and rebuilt possibilities. And it was relatively complicate and so full of errors. It was possible at Puppy linux (in few steps and later with a GUI) but also at SliTaz (with an extravagant excursion deep in the system try... but SliTaz did have other ways to reorganize and save). After that, USB did become common and did change and make those transaction also common and necessary! Today only a few minutes thank Refractasnapshot! Thank you very much to the refracta developer/s!
Can anybody remember how it was problematic to make a snapshot out the Commando Line Interpreter?
I did make so much snapshots in december because my kernel problems, I can not recognize some goods snapshots any more. but the good ones are on a usb stick.
how to rebuld the iso using the files on the stick?
how to realize that not one the stick but directly on a partition on the hard disk?

very positive experience today: my PC seems to work friendly with vmlinuz-6.6.15-amd64 (last week is was not possible in 32 bit with the actual ceres kernel)!
also it was not the PC but the kernel and Devuan can handle again with some not so usual hardware ;-) !
I did have last year a valid snapshot from me Devuan Crown 64 bit Ceres (was at the time where Daedalus was testing). And the ugly story with the new kernels did happen.
I did now "convert" it as I do since years. It is about the same as my snapshot Devian Star 32 bit from the parallel thread.
But nothing to do, the last step is not possible
because somewhat in relation with
libsystemd0 !
at Devuan...
The rest of my snapshot seems to be ok! It would give an image with a size of about 2 GB with comparable stuff but 64 bit, and, over that (not available in 32 bit at all) ANDBOX!

as long and during month ago I did explain, my actual main Pc from DELL (XT3) does not support the new kernels from Devuan.
I did remove those kernels...
But you can probably reintroduce then easily using synaptic (that I did use to remove then...).
BUT
- Dell Aptitude XT3 is NOT the only one PC touched by the kernel terror at Devuan (I did loose 3 months of work because of that and did have to change the distribution and go to Ubuntu again, oh terror):
- my old Acer emachines has also the same problem!
and the new (2..3 days ago) bluestar linux (is not star from Devuan!!! not at all: is bluestar from Arch) works immediately without some problem on both!
thank you very much!
yes, I shut down from terminal with
sudo shutdown -h now
(it is not from me, was so and have to be so because it uses JWM! but JWM has so much profits espec. it size!)
REBOOT is more easy: CTRL F5 and after that CTRL DEL
synaptic: you can login as root and it works ;-) !
as user impossible because you are not superuser ;-)
I have (only) 8 GB RAM but can load in RAM (3d option at booting time) and it works
It was the goal to rich with this action: a super Puppy linux: you load it (if possible in RAM, but also if you "only" the first load option not out the RAM it is the same: the start will also be forgotten next start!) - it works super fast and good - you shut down - no trace : you are free, nobody can follow you ...
start a full installation is only for circonstances and those willing let traces for tomorrow! think about that before you start!
(you can probably also save the ISO on the disk and START directly OUT THE ISO with grub start of CD images! Search in the forum, Our friendly fsmithred (thank you very much!) did give me examples in that forum how to do that)
... RACY, LIGHTNING as Puppy Linux because out the RAM (but rare were the Puppy Linux offering so much main software preinstalled as base!
and this one is not only compatible, it is Devuan (but Star in the configuration from Ozy, only changed by nursing through the different Devuan stages since the publication: divers incompatibilities did appear making divers involuntary remove needing! Puppy Linux to be comparable needs at least the devx.sfs ! But the execution speed is comparable after start out the RAM. My only one real deception: the load after the initial start find I long (full 2 minutes and 30 seconds at least - I find it is long! But also the normal start (1st option) is long because it never works OUT THE RAM!)...
Thank you!
Note: That iso fits in a USB card with only 2 GB (old portable phones out the time before smart phones ;-) ). The Ubuntu iso not but fit well in an fat16 file system (have 4 GB room). Fat 16 systems are better to burn the iso with dd into the drive because it was the native mode as USB memories came!
did forget: keyboard is US INTL (works well with hareware having the brand US INTL) being usable for a lot of European languages incl. my mother tongue, French, and my family tongue, German (as it is an official keyboard variant, look for pictures in the web)
it is the keyboard used bei https://inputking.com ! using inputking, you can write about all languages of the world without to activate some input method, only open the page, select the language group and write... you will also find a picture of the keyboard in inputking! But take care: the build in editor of inputking has no commands! To save your text, you must use the mouse or CTRL C ! And if your browser crashes, the work is probably loos.
Browser: installed is Gnome browser with the complete Gnome office (plus the presentation magicpoint, command name for magicpoint is mgp ).
If online you can add seamonkey (I hate firefox, but it is also a possible option) with the command
sudo apt install seamonkey
as a depository for it (and firefox) is present in sources.list.
For a completely other keyboard in the first session,
setxkbmap some whatelse
and snapshot (you can select free each keyboard using refractainstaller after refractasnapshot)!
good luck...
It is really only MY (for me and a friend having birth day the 29. February!) snapshot, size 1,7 GB.
You use completely if you want at your own risk. No claim to me!
Download is

I did update yesterday but did get a broken package (concerning «qemu»! For those don't having to do with qemu, it is probably no problem: They can try to actualize!). This is the rease why 1 week old...

Enjoy if you can's need!
Info: I have no WLAN at home (old house where the office desk is wired) and don't know something about this matter (Puppy Linux 32 bit bookworm also uses connman! Perhaps you can get help in connman there!)
Ah! Puppy Linux! You can find an other upload from me, also an experimental but from Extix (is itself a snapshot, see https://extix.se ) / Ubuntu (2025.04), size 2.1 GB, looking here at the puppy form!
Hi Zephyr,
After a quick test in my gymnastic and yoga room, where the next PC is available (and is NOT an uggly DELL XT3 (that Devuan will not deserve any more...) but the old ACER emachines with AMD64 from my dead father, it is the reason because it is not an uggly (find some forum users) DELL. I, I buy always DELL's, I can't connect with connman easily probably because I have to learn the settings and manipulation of connman. It will be longer but I did already search and easily found divers pages I have to study now. But I need time and it is actually a problem for me. I will also probably upload the ISO without complete solution (but introduce your change! Perhaps it is enough in case of a new installation...).
If someone uses later the ISO, he can try to change the (low) kernel (that I must use in DELL PC's) with apt.
Also, I did simply erase the preinstalled seamonkey as precaution to get a low size to save it on the 2GB usb card, he can reactive it easily using apt install (but gnome browser is installed and works. luakit is also installed as they are only a few bites more...).
Kind regards
Hi Zephyr,
Thank you very much! I will try it soon, as I will upload my version the 29. february for a friend having birthday only all 4 years (as I did upload my extix remaster exactly for Christmas, see https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=10177 as I did not have any more some starting version of crown, also 64 bit, based on ceres or testing (my last own one based on Daedalus as testing did, at Christmas time, don't start any more...
my actual iso of star based on ceres is only 1,7 GB in size and can start in the RAM of my main PC as a Puppy Linux.
this star includes wine, winetricks, aqemu with qemu, rosegarden and kdenlive a full gnome office (browser, abi, gnumeric, magicpoint, gnome browser, hunspell, tesseract-ocr, xsane, gimagereader (all 3 only with English, but add of other is easy, I use then for oriental language as hindi, tamil, korean, chinese and japanese. I don't use some input method as I do not much in those languages: I simply use http://inputking.com! I simply copy the hunspell and tesseract stuff als well as fonts for the languages in), mpv (I am not happy: it "flashes" (probably from kernel)), gimp etc incl. libreCAD.
for children (and dads) are, over rosegarden, ucb-logo, swi-prolog, gprolog and gforth, as well as granule (flashcards software to learn what you want, but principally languges, without stuff (you must enter the stuff yourself (for ex. the public domain sound files from https://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/ , an excellent site to learn languages!), and a lot more... it fits in a very old usb card with only 2 GB...
warning: I do that for me! as each user, I do only adapt each used distro to my needs or the needs of parents / neighbors using rarely more than "apt" "mkdir" or "ln" also regular transformations, all mainly in CLI
(apt because I can print out, what did happen, and nursing my /home/x/.bash_history reuse my experience later, it is all!)
Exemples:
apt update
apt upgrade > traceOfUpgrading20240220
apt search somewhat
apt download somewhat
apt sources somewhat
apt install somewhat > traceOfInstallingSomewhat # here can I see which other packages are recommend ;-)
refractainstaller
for this reason, I can't help because I did myself develop nothing (it is the reason why I did not answer to the user at the Puppy forum, as, there, at the Puppy forum, the real developer Exton from https;//extix.se is also member and present! After he would answer, I would have the possibility to check if I can add something concerning things doing by myself!
some real developers would produce really more attractive adapted ISO's...
as I did find an old snapshot out 2023.08.02 from me (nursing it years ago to daedalus (as it was testing) I did actualize it yesterday to the actual ceres and it seems to work on my DELL XT3 correctly so I have now a new ISO from Star with somekind a maximal set of the app's I am using frequently. Normally, I am wired directly there where the PC's are. And at other PC's, I use special software without some LAN or WLAN.
To test my new Star Linux on other PC's I need to accede now exceptionally the WLAN!
How to do that? What is the right app? How to start it commando line in the monitor?
