#3201 Re: Installation » [solved] How to update to ascii? » 2017-06-18 01:20:36

@keos . . . yes, that should do it.  Note that the instructions from the website point to:

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/devuan-ascii.list

Which is an alternate location to:

/etc/apt/sources.list

You could possibly have the sources in two locations!

#3202 Re: Off-topic » Antix and Debian base » 2017-06-17 15:07:10

Well, MXLinux handles it this way.   So I assume that Antix might be based on that method.  IOW they only install sysvinit according to Debian's method leaving all systemd entanglements present.

You might also find this discussion instructive.

#3203 Re: Installation » [solved] How to update to ascii? » 2017-06-16 21:48:18

From the website at https://devuan.org/os/etc/apt/sources.list :

Move to ascii (testing)

    cat > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/devuan-ascii.list <<EOD
    # /etc/apt/sources.list.d/devuan-ascii.list

    deb     http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii main
    deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii main
    deb     http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii-updates main
    deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii-updates main
    deb     http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main
    deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main
    EOD

IOW, just change your sources list to point to ASCII.

Jessie, ASCII, Ceres???  And please use BBCode to enclose the messages.

Nice to see that you made it to the forum garyz.dev1.  Yes, that is a bit confusing. talk.devuan.org is now read-only but wasn't when this thread was started.  Hopefully it can remain as an historical archive in some format.

I am new at IRC, but is someone monitoring the d-dev channel ? 24 hours - or is it logged so I can drop a line and check back later or leave my email?

Someone is always logged into the #devuan- channels.  I am on maybe 18 hours a day. but not always in front of the computer. You can leave a question on #devuan and then check the botbot logs later to see if it's been answered.

I ask because I went to the #d1g-users several times and found no one (I assume)[could have been my drum-roll entrance!]
TIA for any light you may shed --(OR others)

#d1g-users has hardly had any traffic since we got it going.  You'll have a better chance of catching our attention if you call us by name like you did on #devuan yesterday.

I did not make those changes myself but watched the process from the sidelines.   I don't know that there is a howto for that anywhere.   It's a complicated process that I understand starts with rootskel and rootskel-gtk.  They are in the project list on this forum or search for them directly on git . . .

Amprolla is an APT repository realtime merging....

why this important tecnicall information are not easy available for users?

Amprolla has been discussed for YEARS on the DNG mail list and irc.  We are in the process of moving to Amprolla2 .

This very forum has lists of git.d.o projects where amprolla is listed as: amprolla (devuan-infrastructure) - amprolla is an apt repository on the fly merger with proxy and....  Do take a look at those lists that are linked back to their respective git projects.

that's explain many of things! so then in any case if this its the behaviour, i think Devuan developers now will have more work if continue mirroring the Debian repository, due the two main changes: debugger package repository and xorg new behaviour

so i see the future too complicated

Why so negative about the future?  Accept the challenge or lose your freedom.  For me that choice is obvious . . .

Debian Jessie references that are not systemd related should be valid for Devuan.  Sometimes Wheezy references might be helpful too.

Well, I work on a 32 bit machine with 4 gb of ram and a 15" monitor.  That's hardly powerful hardware but I'm not complaining.  People deal with ISP throttling, unstable connections and socio-economic discrimination even in US.  That's hardly Devuan's fault.

@mckaygerhard . . . If you want to continue to post here, please be more respectful of those who are trying to help you.  Insulting Devuan or Devuan developers is not going to go well for you.  An attitude adjustment is in order . . .

#3211 Re: Installation » how to install ffmpeg » 2017-06-14 00:50:54

Hi keb,

You will need to get ffmpeg from http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

You'll need to install the deb-multimedia-keyring and add this to your sources.list

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org/ jessie main

I'm not quite understanding what you're trying to say.  But Devuan is running much more than desktops and "arm toys".  All of Dyne's infrastructure is on Devuan and this board is also.  If you'd read the reviews on Distrowatch or comments on irc, you'd know that many servers have been upgraded to Devuan. And I guess you missed this . . .

#3214 Re: Other Issues » newbie question, as I am » 2017-06-10 17:19:11

I'd stick with the Wheezy handbook and read/compare selectively in the Jessie Handbook.  There are things that are specific to Devuan of course.

#3218 Re: Devuan » Palemoon in oficial repository » 2017-06-07 19:46:38

I have used Steve Pusser's repo's on occasion with no problem.  However one thing concerns me and that is that the repo is somewhat tied to MX.  And MX although claiming to be systemd-free has only enabled sysvinit as per Debian's instructions.  This means that systemd hooks will remain in the packages in his repo and may bring in unwanted dependencies.

#3221 Re: Installation » Devuan for Raspberry PI 3 ? » 2017-06-06 21:41:40

You could leave an issue on parazyd's repo at git.devuan.org.  Chances of him coming here are almost nil.  Or post to DNG.  He's chatting on #devuan as of the timestamp above.

#3222 Re: Installation » Devuan for Raspberry PI 3 ? » 2017-06-06 21:35:23

Talk to parazyd on #devuan-arm or #devuan-dev or even #devuan.
