Testing Freia (netinstall Oct 31 2026)

Is there a chance of getting the plank package in Freia too?
It's possibly too early to ask, but someone might know.
Plank was present as a package in Excalibur.
Thanks

Hi,
plank is in ceres.
It seems to be the same version as in excalibur.

Thank you, Delgado
I downloaded the excalibur version of plank and tried to install it. It threw me some errors caused by dependency problems with incompatible libraries. (Gdebi)

I just did on my freia

apt install -t ceres plank

and it works.

ceres was already in sources.list, since I'm using blender, virtualbox and (the non-esr) firefox from ceres ayway.

Wow, Delgado, thank you!
It did the trick.

I did NOT install all proposed updates from ceres, just plank + dependencies.
Is it advisable to remove ceres from the sources list thereafter? I think yes....
Have a good day!

That depends.  If you want to receive updates for plank and its dependencies, you should leave ceres in, and set up apt pinning.  Basically, you'll want to set a higher Pin-Priority for ceres on plank and its dependencies, then afterwards, set a negative Pin-Priority for Package * on ceres.  Something like this (edit as needed)

# /etc/apt/preferences.d/ceres
Package: plank*
Pin: release n=ceres
Pin-Priority: 500

Package: *
Pin: release n=ceres
Pin-Priority: -1

I didn't include plank's dependencies, because I didn't bother to look them up smile
If you don't want plank+dependencies updates coming in through apt, then you can remove ceres from sources altogether.
