I'm looking for a mail client that (1) works in the Linux console and (2) is compatible with modern mail protocols. Bonus points if it does not come with large dependencies. Any suggestions?

My suggestion/recommendation would be "alpine", it's available as a Devuan package via apt:

@camtaf Did you actually check the article at the link you posted?
It seems pure AI-slop, there is zero explanation on what their ratings are based on and zero details about what the advantages and disadvantages of the various mail clients are, so it's of no use to somebody who wants to select an email client.
I would suggest that you delete the link as otherwise you are only driving traffic to a completely useless AI-slop article.
(that whole linuxlinks site looks like an AI-generated clickbait site to me)
