Window managers instead of desktop environments, use less resources.....
(I used Fluxbox for many years, now, I like to use JWM, when I want 'minimal' - but mainly just use XFCE for convenience.)

@brday I use jwm + jwmkit on a regular basis. So no one is not accurate.

brday. I can never get it below 350 MiB. Does it depend on the hardware your using? Even just a base Devuan install with JWM and it is never that low.
What's your secret?

@rations depends on how much ram your computer has I think.
Checked and I use under 500MB with just that running and I have 32GB of ram.
I don't know the formula, of how much ram is used vs how much you have.
Someone might know, but it ain't me.

Yes it depends on the hardware by a lot, to idle at ~300mb on a lightweitght desktop you need a slightly older intel cpu with i915 only igpu, so i think upto 11gen on desktop or 9th gen on laptop, on newer gen the xe driver consumes a bit more like a dgpu + you also have the sof firmware for audio dsp.
If you have other processor, amdgpu used to consume a lot less but now it got very fat, i think nouveau with older gpu is economical, or old radeon.
Gpu is the fattest driver by far but also watch the other peripherals and the userspace usb ones too.
LE software wise you need to neuter some dbus services too and watch the .desktop entries if you're on a regular desktop, these bring about 60mb alone without the gnome/kde libraries bloat, which is probably another 40-50mb or so.
