Problem with apt-get update

Hi,

the last months I get relatively often when using

apt-get update

error messages. containing IGN and IP not found.

Of course sources-list is configured in a right manner, as it is defined.

Example:
deb http://de.deb.devuan.org/merged/ daedalus main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
... and so on

When repeating the command only some minutes later, the problem could be disappeared, sometimes I have to wait a longer time. Does anybody know the reason?

Thank you for your answers.

hmj

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Known problem, issues with DNS resolution by the internet providers. There are various threads here in the forum about this issue. They do not like the deb.devuan.org which is not a single IP but a so called round robin of various servers (used for load distribution). You can't do anything really. Only thing to try is to use a different DNS resolver.
And I would skip the "de" and just use http://deb.devuan.org/.....

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Thank you for your answer.

I had tried to change from "de.deb" to "deb", the problem was the same. I have a neighbour, where I have installed a devuan system, who is absolutely blocked by the german Telekom as provider. I was forced to update his system by connecting his computer to my router.

I'll try to change the DNS resolver, as you have proposed.

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Strangely enough, I am also from Germany and have the Deutsche Telekom as ISP. I know the issues you described in your inital post, had them a few times a while ago, but recently no issues at all. And I use the Telekom as DNS provider. Currently no issues, works flawlessly (somewhere in a village in the middle of Frankonia).

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Try changing deb.devuan.org or de.deb.devuan.org, whichever it is currently, to sledjhamr.org, which is one of the Devuan mirrors in Germany.

Re: Problem with apt-get update

@pcalvert
I tried sledjhamr.org on my computer - IGN, error 404, not found IP, message (translated) no release file.
On my two computers, the problem happens from time to time. For my neighbour I'll try to change the DNS-server.

But thank you for this idea.

That seems a bit odd. Try this and reply with the results:

$ nslookup sledjhamr.org

$ nslookup sledjhamr.org 1.1.1.1

Re: Problem with apt-get update

"nslookup" gives as results IPs and so on, everythings seems to be fine.

I'm no specialist in networking, but I could imagine that the configuration of sledjhamr.org on the server is different to that of [de].deb.devuan.

I got technical hints for my neighbour's speedport of Telekom to change the DNS.
I shall call the Telekom support, and there is the german BNA (agency for nets of all kinds), where you can complain. There must be the possibility to use open source software, the blocking of updates is nothing to be accepted.

@rolfie
My neighbour has changed from Vodafone to Telekom. With Vodafone - DSL - he had no problems at all. The speedport-router is connected with fiberglass-technology. We are near the frontier to France.

Please reply with the output of this command:

$ whereis connman

Re: Problem with apt-get update

The output on my computer:
/etc/connman (and the address of the manual)
On my neighbour's computer I suppose the same result.

In both cases we use dsl-cables, not WLAN.

Could you please explain the reason of this question?

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Ok, I am on conventional DSL here in Frankonia. No glas fibre yet directly to my home. They are working on that.

I use the standard Telekom DNS service and I at least currently have no issues with deb.devuan.org. And I have a Fritzbox bought on my own, no Speedport from Telekom any more.

Re: Problem with apt-get update

@pcalvert
This evening, I changed the configuration as you have proposed. I had hoped to have the solution, but the problem is the same as before.

My neighbour is absolutely blocked concerning the update-addresses. I had the problem only from time to time. Next step: I'll try to change the DNS-configuration on my neighbour's computer. Before he changed to Telekom (from Vodafone, DSL), there were zero problems.

@ rolfie
Me too: DSL, Fritzbox of my own, my ISP is O2,

In case of success I will post it.

Re: Problem with apt-get update

To complete my posts:
My neighbour's speedport gives the possibility to define preferential DNS. I activated these 2 points (IPv4 and IPv6) and added one time different DNS of the Telekom itself, the other time independent ones.
The changes were accepted, no poblems to connect with the internet, but apt-get update: the same problem as before.

Re: Problem with apt-get update

IPv6 often causes problems. Can you test with enabling IPv4 only?

Re: Problem with apt-get update

Thank you for the answer.
Indeed I had prefered IPv4. But the speedport is informing, that at first IPv6 addresses are searched. I found neutral DNS in a computer journal, but only for access with IPv4. Using my search engine I found the IPv6-addresses.

When using apt-get update, the messages concerning the not found IPs show IPv6-addresses. I see no possibility to force the speedport to prefer IPv4.

I think you are completely right, that the reason of this problem depends on the connection using IPv6.

1 - Have you tried specifying a mirror that offers ipv4 only?
2 - You can indicate to apt to use ipv4 only.  for example, create file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99force-ipv4 with the contents

Acquire::ForceIPv4=true;

@rbit
Very interesting - no, I did not know that.

I'm going to install excalibur on my neighbour's computer and will add the file as you have proposed.
