Thunderbird receives more mail, then I end up in my inbox?

after the recent Thunderbird update (not 100% sure if that is the source of the problem) I have some strange behavior tẃith a pop mail account.
I have that account set to only receive messages on demand. Since the update whenever I use the "get messages" button, I see the footer stating something like "receiving x messages of 39" and when it finishes, I end up with significant less messages in my inbox.

I do have 2 filters, which sort messages into 2 sub-folders, but no messages end up there either.

Since no one else is commenting, I will just say that I have been getting a similar behavior.  I do not know if it predates the last upgrade

When Thunderbird runs a get message command I sometimes get a message in the status bar at the bottom about messages received, but there are no messages in my inbox or junk folder.  I even tried using the server's web site email access to check if there were messages in the spam folder there, but there are no new ones.

I do not seem to be missing any messages, it is just weird.

I did the following: Look up the inbox on the server (webmail interface).
2 new messages.
Then I did run the "get messages" on my clients thunderbird.
Status bar is showing some strange number of messages (20+)
New messages actually in inbox:2

haven't used thunderbird for years but seem to recall having to do a "complete uninstall" and then reinstall to cure some misbehavior that i cannot exactly remember. also of note, only ever used POP3 and never IMAP.

Re: Thunderbird receives more mail, then I end up in my inbox?

I'm running 8 Mail accounts in the thunderbird and therefore reluctant to uninstall it completely.

As an addition sometimes I "receive" a bunch of mails with none in my inbox at all.

Why not try another one like betterbird or epyrus?! I'd recommend epyrus since it is easier to switch by copying Mail sub-directory from thunderbird's stuff.

re: @yohno's suggestions of betterbird and/or epyrus

out of curiosity i did a bit of poking around and wanted to share for present/future forum/thread visitors

betterbird's current homepage has several interesting comments regarding thunderbird's broken(ness)
ttps://www.betterbird.eu/

enjoyed this circa 2023 thread and epyrus creator athenian200's apparent easy-going/friendly demeanor

Re: Thunderbird receives more mail, then I end up in my inbox?

I once had a Yahoo Mail account that I accessed with POP3. It showed it had several thousand e-mails instead of the correct number. That might be what is happening. The IMAP/SMTP server reporting a wrong number. I don't know Thunderbird, but it might have a Network Log window like Claws Mail, where you can see the plaintext communication with the server.
