Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

Hi I too miss these tools, GNU/Linux is getting too much like another OS... seems we'll require a savvy tech to change a bash script, because they have slowly taken away all the tools that make GNU/Linux GNU/Linux!

Where is the virtual console shift, alt f1 f6.
What if I want to run shutdown -h now, or killall, or process stop start, or tail -f /var/log/messages, or zcat a man file, or ifup in root and startx in user; etc etc etc etc etc etc.
...
...
P.s., alas, back in the day we used to have shift fn pgup pgdn in console!!

or have networking, and all the hardware operating GUI or not!

...slowly they erode what freedom you/I/we thought we/you/I had.

How can I get these tools (vt, scrolling, wifi and basic networking) back?

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

My first attempt to induce that problem was not successful, so perhaps you could enumerate the installation choices you are making that leads to that problem.

As from power-up: the installation splash screen comes up:
* is this a BIOS boot or UEFI boot?
* and then, what's your sequence of choices/actions?

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

thank you ralph.ronnquist BIOS UEFI good thinking, UEFI I think, then expert
good thinking I need to reset or perhaps flash BIOS

GOODAY! ralph.ronnquist
my install is failing, and I've been doing with computers long enough to learn that you can give ages to going down such a road but wrong road.
i don't understand because i had beowulf and chimaera before, clean install say every six months, and now i get this fail.
i tried beowulf this morning and got exactly the same, how can that be.
possibly i have a problematic hardware development, even in the memory or cpu, it's possible.
i need another box, poor of me to only have one, flipping global inequality zombie holocaust!
thank you for your time.
any thoughts ideas

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

ralph.ronnquist I am inclined to think that my hardware is 'damaged' even at memory cpu level, need to reset bios for a start
please ask questions if you think

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

there are so many spurious nuances, we look at computers as if they are black and white but they are actually mechanical devices, i'm installing to a detachable microsd, even the speed of that can have effect, i need another box

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

Ok;
.. so I choose language (english), location (US.. lying), locale (en_US.UTF-8), no additional; just "continue"
.. I skip past access software
.. I skip past speech synthesizer
.. I do configure keyboard (am english)
.. it skips selecting layout automatically
.. I let it detect media
.. I load the default components only (select nothing of the extras, then "continue")

are we same enough so far?

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

GlennW
I masquerade my MAC address, MANY reasons to do this, not shady
masquerade in wpasupplicant does NOT work
auto masquerade in systemd does NOT work
masquerade in new 'iw' does NOT work
so go back to ifconfig and route
the interweb would NOT work without a degree of low level tool functionality
and some Devaun folk are maintaining these programs, and some young orientals who are computer doctors and realise the situation

ok
.. skip detecting network
.. skip configure network
.. skip "setup users and passwords"
.. skip configure the clock
.. do detect disks
.. do partition disks.. manual:  which partition layout? how large partition(s)?
and how much RAM do you have?

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

i'm truly grateful for all this input, cognition, what with this semi post-covid isolation at 3 years now this new year
for a while working for the chinese i used to test 450 motherboards a day and the 2 doctors used to pass cpu & memory to me when they were a bit fried but sufficient for my task
i'm inclined to think that my notebook cpu is not 100% and there is something in the libsemanage code which is fragile or poor, but ok in libsemange 2 in daedalus
i've even done wget --limit-rate=5.5M akin to like burning optical too fast

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

i know exactly what my old boss doctor of nanotechnology probably the best doctor of nanotechnology in the world and a true genius, would say, flash the bios, can't do that, the internal ssd is totally wiped and zero'd and can't flash DOS only windows, best i can do is reset.
doctor would say open up and disconnect battery for period of time,
i can open box piece of cake and no electrostatic discharge i used to work on military medical air traffic control
i've opened in the past, the battery is on a connector
doctor used to have laptops sat on a rack sometimes for weeks! it's the low tech components that fail, resistors, capacitors, in the 1980's i was building darkrooms with the Greek army, in the 10's i was changing resistors and caps on Sony cathode monitors!
never mind

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

"installing the base system" at 6% is where packages are loaded and validated; nothing yet unpacked.
If it breaks there, then it's due to one of 3 things:
  1) that your media is "corrupted"/broken or
  2) that the target partition is too small or broken, or
  3) that the RAM (which holds the installer system itself) is too small.

libsemanage-common_3.1-1_all.deb is a mere 20K, and loaded after maybe at about 30Mb has been used on the partition.

Unless you make a mistake when partitioning, it would suggest that your media is corrupted.

The published ISO image does not come with that corruption (as evidenced by that it's the same image since start and more than a few people have used it successfully)
You need to verify your download of that image using the published SHA256SUM, and you may well need to verify the physical media it is placed on as well.

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

i hope these few hours of this post has given us all some nuance of food for thought
i will dissect my box and look for a cmos battery (doubt it,) and give it a good chill and if that don't work i will spend my money on a new one, great
the situation is reconnaissance down to bios level
dangerous

i have used it successfully numerous times also
done the SHA256SUM
i will try brand new flash drives for iso and install media
did wget --limit-rate=RATE
ralph.ronnquist thank you for your time and your knowledge and experience has generated integrity for the situation

Re: [SOLVED] The Devuan Ethos

i will default the bios and disconnect the battery for 20 minutes or so
i can try again and let it do automatic partition and see how it goes
i'm afraid i'm going to bed in about half an hour in my locale
peace be with us
