Re: How reduce starting Xorg time?

Yes but if the ABI isn't supported then problems should be expected.

No, not really.

I have an AMD card that functions perfectly under Linux thanks to the efforts of the (paid!) AMD developers who have open sourced their graphics stack (apart from the firmware) and contribute actively to Linux development.

In Windows I cannot use the open source amdgpu driver so I have to use AMDGPU-PRO instead and the performance is *terrible*, especially in respect of power consumption and temperature management. The blobby driver is shit.

Agree, Can you you explain why linux community hate nvidia? A am also love AMD too for free and opensource politics. But now many software and games developers is nvidia oriented.
Here example https://developer.blender.org/T96614

This is a very old story that affects multiple (so-called) hardware suppliers. The "so-called" is in there because of the growth of Firmware within hardware. The hardware manufacturers love that firmware because it allows them to keep control. They may refuse to release the software source (also to keep control) and then are hated by Linux adherents.

All the above means that even if you currently have a working system, at some point something will upgrade & the mfc may refuse to update *it's* firmware & immediately your expensive hardware becomes a brick.

You cannot fix stupidity. Learn your lesson, sigh & walk away.

Hello:

+1

Exactly the case with my Nvidia 340XX legacy cards with (up to now) no chimaera drivers.
The same thing happened with my Matrox cards a few years ago.

So ...
Then it was no more Matrox, ever.
And as of this year, it is no more Nvidia, ever.

If and when I need to get new cards, they will be AMD.

Quite so.

Best,

A.

Re: How reduce starting Xorg time?

Im amazed any system that old still works

I would replace
PSU
OS HDD
and replace thermal paste

Also check all FANS to be working

Replace Celey or i3 with an Xeon if you can source it from Aliexpress for that old socket type

Might be worth UPGRADING to an X58 or X79
instead of a system that old - Socket 478/771/775
