What is the output from the following commands?
cat /proc/asound/cards
aplay -l
aplay -L
lspci

I put it up here (1 week) where it doesn't get scrambled (didn't try here):
https://paste.opensuse.org/2213c656
the top half is Devuan, the bottom half Suse Leap-15.3
Not likely to be a factor but under Leap I have qjackCtl set
up to run *pajackconnect.bsh* at start and stop.

You only have two audio interfaces, so I would expect them to be labeled hw:0 and hw:1
Do you want to use the on-board audio or the nvidia?

I think one of them is HDMI, beyond that it's chinese 2 me
I went to the Leap install and took pictures of the setup pages,
comparing them I saw that on the Devuan install it showed
Output Device: hw:II,0
Imput Device: hw:II
Changing both to (default) fixed the prob.
I haven't done the Leap setup for ages (probably
just copied the home folder with each upgrade) so
I don't know where those '(default)' settings came from.
Thanks for giving me a hunch...
