Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

Myself and at least one other have noted that certain sound settings do not persist in 3.0 or 3.1, where they do in ascii or debian.

Further to this, I note that backgrounds added by the user are lost in 3.1   This is not a problem in 2.0 or 3.1

Can anyone confirm this on 64 bit please? Just add a background from your pictures folder, then choose a different background, does it loose the one you just added?

This is happening on mate desktop. Is it happening on other de?

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

Yes, I can reproduce this stupid bug in 64-bit beowulf mate. It's not a problem in xfce, because you don't have to "add" a picture in your settings if you copy the file into the folder that holds the other bg images. Xfce shows you all the image files in the selected directory.

Does mate not do this in debian?

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

I upgraded a 3.0 to 3.1 in the past hour, no sign of this bug so maybe needs a fresh install to reproduce? I've only seen it on my current lightweight mate / netinstall on a 4gb ssd eee pc. No immediate plans to install it on another machine but curiosity builds

Debian mate is fine, LMDE 2,3 or 4 with mate de all fine, ascii is fine, 3.0 is fine, and now 3.0 upgraded to 3.1 is fine.

Beowulf 3.0 install with Mate dated June 2020, amd64 with backports kernel 5.9, up to date:

Just added a picture from my home folder as background: survives changing the background and a reboot.

Problem is in fresh 3.1 install.

Oh, to reproduce, you need to change to a different picture, then see if it persists. It will always persist if it's your current background and the file is present, so far...

There should be no difference in the Mate desktop if I update an older 3.0 install or do a fresh install from 3.1 when using the same init.

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

I've been testing by adding two image files to directories under /usr/share/backgrounds/ (cosmos and mate/abstract). Then right-click desktop to change background. Neither show up when I navigate to the directory that holds the files I just added.

Next step is to click on the Add button and add those pictures. Then select one and close that window.

Then try to change the bg again, and the added image that I'm not currently using no longer shows up. It's still in the directory, but my desktop has forgotten about it.

update/upgrade did not change it.

I think we need to compare package lists.

dpkg -l | awk '/^ii/ { print $2 " " $3 }' > pkglist-debian

Do the same to make pkglist-devuan and compare them. Send them to me and I'll compare them (I have a script to do that).

Just done a Mate install from 3.1 in VBox, can confirm that that installation forgets the picture from the home folder.

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

for dpkg -l | awk '/^ii/ { print $2 " " $3 }' > pkglist-debian

I get:

dpkg-query: no packages found matching /^ii/ { print $2 " " $3 }

what did I do wrong?

update: am using runit on the 3.1 problem box, sysvinit on the no-problem upgraded box

You are missing a quote before the print command. Use copy/paste.

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

I typed it exactly as it is there.

My comment was copied and pasted from your example.

In just pasted it into terminal on this my lmde3 main machine, and, wait, a package-list appeared in /home..

So I figured maybe I needed a desktop so I went on another getty and did a startx and had no kb or mouse so now I am stuck with avril lavign looping in moc until the battery dies

,,,sorry for the delay, that list is coming...

OK, so I needed to install awk-original, and had missed the  |  (what do you call the upright bar?)

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

The problem is also present in a fresh install based on Beowulf 3.0.0 netinstall in VBox. Same procedure used as for the 3.1.0 install, only difference is runit on 3.1.0 and openrc on 3.0.0.

I guess there must be a bug somewhere in Mate. Strangely enough my workstation is fine.

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

My script for comparing the package lists is spammed with packages that are different only in architecture. Here's a simper diff showing what mate packages we have. Anything that starts with a + is one that I have and you don't. Anything that starts with - is one you have that I don't. The only one of those is mate-tweak, and when I added it (without Recommends) it didn't fix the problem. Not sure where to go with this now.

$ diff -u mlevd-list my-mate-list | grep "^[\+|\-]mate"
+mate-applet-brisk-menu 0.5.0-9
+mate-applets 1.20.3-2
+mate-applets-common 1.20.3-2
+mate-backgrounds 1.20.0-2
+mate-calc 1.20.3-1
+mate-calc-common 1.20.3-1
+mate-desktop-environment 1.20.0+5
+mate-desktop-environment-core 1.20.0+5
+mate-icon-theme-faenza 1.20.0+dfsg1-2
-mate-polkit:i386 1.20.2-1
+mate-polkit:amd64 1.20.2-1
+mate-screensaver 1.20.3-3
+mate-screensaver-common 1.20.3-3
+mate-system-monitor 1.20.2-1
+mate-system-monitor-common 1.20.2-1
-mate-tweak 18.10.2-1
+mate-themes 3.22.18-1
+mate-user-guide 1.20.2-1
+mate-utils 1.20.2-3
+mate-utils-common 1.20.2-3

Note: That vertical bar that we use to pipe the output of one command to another is called a pipe. Or it could mean "OR" when there are two in a row.

Re: Is there a general problem with user settings persistence in 3.1,mate?

I found a clue. This problem is also in debian but, wait for it...

I did a netinstall of the latest kali. Select and install software was broken so went ahead anyway. Added light mate desktop

Stunned to see that it happily retains your user defined backgrounds across reboots.

Question? Which package or procedure provides the magic where you get your special home folders generated? I seem to keep doing net installs and not getting a proper home directory

If you mean the subdirectories in your home for MUSIC PICTURES and whatever else, that would be xdg-user-dirs and xdg-utils. If those are installed, look in /etc/xdg/ if you want to edit the configs. There are a few xdg- commands, too. You might be interested in xdg-user-dirs-update.

If you mean /home/<username> does not exist, then you somehow failed to create a user during the installation. You would have had to say no when asked if you wanted to create a user. In an already-installed system, the adduser command does all the things you need to create a user. You can change those defaults in /etc/adduser.conf.
