Time to get away from Linux variants that require systemd...
I am looking at a Supermicro SYS-5029S-TN2 box with Super X11SSV-Q motherboard. Will Devuan run on an i5/i7 chip in this?
Spent the past week trying to configure this in detail and am just not sure. Before I shell out for the components I'd like to hear from the experts if I am on the right track or not.

I'm not an expert about Supermicro, but I've read
https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/ … d/X11SSV-Q
and the specs seem pretty standard to me: Socket LGA1151, 32 GB max RAM,...
I'm running Beowulf on a Socket LGA1151 mobo with newer CPU (an i5-9600T) and 32 GB of RAM without any issues.
Just my $0.02.

Thank you Pedro.
The fact that you are running an i5 and have the LGA1151 socket takes a huge load off my mind. I am a graybeard (50+ years) in programming and software but my lack of knowledge and experience on the hardware side drives me crazy.
I assume that I will need a fan for an i5 or i7 cpu as well as thermal grease.
Again - thanks for your quick reply.

"i5" & "i7" are fairly meaningless without the specific processor type, both have been around for over 12 years now. Bear in mind that the stock beowulf kernel version was frozen over 2 years ago so any hardware introduced after that date may not be supported properly. I know that the 10th & 11th generation Intel integrated graphics chips won't work at all in Devuan beowulf even with the backported kernel because they need a newer Mesa version (not particularly relevant for a server but it gives you an idea of the potential problems that can arise).

Yes, they are too powerful to go fanless.
I assembled the system i was talking about myself. In Spanish:

but if are not confident with hardware, may be wise to get help on this side or even order the system already assembled. Usually they charge around $50, you can ask a quote beforehand.

Agreed, of course. I would like to point out that Beowulf run perfectly on my 9th generation Intel i5-9600T with the stock kernel.
