@fsmithred: Sorry for replying late. I booted your version of iso and it is booting fine. I will install and will update soon.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

@fsmithred: Thanks! Now it is good to go. I see gnome-shell segfault log at shutdown though.

What is the difference between the official iso of beowulf and the refracta iso? With official iso and 5.x kernel it is sure to get udevd worker problem getting stuck for 3 minutes. Same when I tried using debian-installer with netinstall iso too.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

The oblx5.6 iso excludes Recommends from installing and there are few or no metapackages, no display manager, no policykit, no elogind or libpam-elogind, just has libelogind0.

Here's a full list of config files that were changed in the oblx5.6 iso. The only thing in this list that was changed to fix a boot delay was lvm.conf, and that was changed in the desktop-live isos, too.

# debsums -ca
/usr/lib/os-release
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
/etc/pam.d/login
/usr/share/lxdm/themes/Industrial/nobody.png
/etc/lxdm/lxdm.conf
/etc/pmount.allow
/etc/sysctl.conf
/usr/bin/refractainstaller-yad
/etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults

Maybe an answer in these lists, but for sure a lot of noise:

Packages in oblx5.6 that are not in the desktop-live:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/refracta/misc … p-live.txt

Packages in desktop-live that are not in oblx5.6:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/refracta/misc … blx5.6.txt

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

@fsmithred: The problem cropped up again. Udevd..worker timing out. This happened after I re-installed the same kernel (5.6.0-0.bpo.2-amd64)  and xorg packages.

Is it related to the initramfs generated

Tell me exactly what you installed and how you installed it. Reinstalling the kernel and xorg did not break anything here.

Actually, nothing much I run. This is the history of commands I ran since the installation:

Last packages installed: bluez, bluez-firmware

'apt install' appears on 47 lines. I realize some of those are repeated because they did not run the first time, but there was still a lot added.
You added ubuntu repository keys, so I have to wonder what was installed from ubuntu that might cause problems.
Looks like you installed the 5.7 kernel from unstable.
And you purged and reinstalled other stuff.

I can't tell what went wrong or when it happened.

I have used gpg authentication for ubuntuzilla repo which has firefox-new. I jut tried latest debian kernel 5.7.6 also after the problem appeared (that was foolish..). Not a franken system smile . I got some screenshot while the screen was stuck. It says about raid setup, which I don't have (my system has a intel 330 SSD & 1tb WD HDD):

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

Hi

Maybe frankenDevuan maybe not. Maybe try to remove openrc (and use the default sysvnit) instead. I have had problems with openrc on devuan. Not the case with sysvinit. And what rules did you apply to /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules ??? . How are your /etc/apt/sources.list  and other files from there.
It is difficult to help because we don't know what you have done in your editing. And why are you using the kernel form unstable instead from backports. And why not 4.19 that you report works just fine.

I have one rule. If it works don' t break it. Seems to me you are making some of the problems yourself. I am sure we will like to help you. But try not to mess with things. Use packages from only one distro and release (Beowulf). Do not blend them that will just make more problems.

Have a nice day

If you want and need the latest firefox download the Debian package directly from Mozilla, unpack it to /tmp, mv to /opt/firefox and create a starter manually. Easy done, and no foreign repo in your sources.

I prefer to unpack it in $HOME so that it can update itself without having to be run as root.

The thing is, why did not it work with 5.x kernel? I hope I'm helping finding it out. So far I've installed 2-3 times and this udevd worker timing out problem is reproducible. @larsH: I will try sysvinit.

udev rules was recent try to get my Honor 8x configured for adb. I removed that. There is only one package from other repo - firefox. FYI, ubuntu-mozilla-build version of firefox installs to: /opt/firefox directory.

@fsmithred: I checked /var/log/apt/history.log and /var/log/apt/term.log

This is the complete list of packages I installed for Gnome as well as bluez* packages. Nothing other than that. You may also see the raid6 mmessages in the start. The boot messages briefly detects the hdd as /dev/sda4 (as seen in the photo). But, later shows as /dev/sdb4 correctly.

Works fine with my method, I have just enabled notifications. Getting the notification, FF downloads the update on request, applies updates on next restart as user, no issues.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

I am going through boot messages while udevd got stuck. It says  "1 urandom warning(s) missed due to ratelimiting". Is this related to the entropy bug too? I already installed haveged.

I've seen that warning on systems that boot. I don't think it's a problem.

I added bluez and then blueman, rebooting after each. Still can't reproduce the problem. You may need to install things one at a time and see which package breaks it.

But, that's all I added (even in apt history.log). When I installed with beowulf-desktop-live and beowulf-netinstall ISO's, I installed linux-image-5.6.x and just rebooting to the OS results in the udevd worker getting time out.
---
But, is there a way to strip off the Beowulf installation to minimal basic install, so that I can test if the udevd problem persists? Currently I've removed Gnome, libx11-*, xcb0 and other X related packages. If there is a way, I can just install the default package lists only, then we can find if the problem disappears.

**Unrelated** : thermald, has only systemd script /lib/systemd/system/thermald.service . No /etc/rc* or /etc/init.d/ script for startup.

You can convert a systemd unit file to a sysvinit script with sysd2v.

You can convert a systemd unit file to a sysvinit script with sysd2v.

Then copy your_init_script to /etc/init.d/ Make it executable (+x). Change the owner:group to root:root.

You'll then need to run:

sudo update-rc.d your_init_script defaults

to set up the /etc/rc* files (which are symlinks back to your_init_script)

and

sudo invoke-rc.d your_init_script start

to start the daemon immediately.

sudo service your_init_script start

should also work.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

Thank you @Head_on_a_Stick & @Marjorie. I was about to manually symlink the script from /etc/init.d/ to /etc/rc2.d/ .  BTW, does their more packages in Devuan that needs conversion from systemd unit files to init scripts?

---
@fsmithred: I did some dangerous measures to lean the system, instead of re-install. Purged off most of the packages including critical ones. Now, my install has only about 530 packages. Now it boots with linux-image-5.6.x and I get upto the virtual terminal. No delay. Onward, if I install Gnome3, I assume the udevd worker problem may arise. Any input to find out which package will cause the trouble.

OT: Kernel, apt all were purged, essentially making it a broken system. Then, I boot into the another linux installation and extracted filesystem.squashfs from the refracta iso provided. Downloaded apt & related dependencies in chroot environment, copied to /var/cache/apt/archives of Devuan. Afterwards, installed it with dpkg in chroot Devuan installation.

apt-list of packages:

Maybe, but that's not the case here. It boots fine with gnome and 5.6 bpo kernel. Here's the package list from that system.

Also, desktop-live installed and with 5.6 kernel added works fine.

Probability of /lib/udev/rules.d/ folder getting any changes or addition if I install Gnome? Should I try installing Gnome now? I will look into the list of packages suggested.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

@fsmithred: I have installed Gnome3 again. And it is now working without udevd getting stuck. Don't know how randomly this bug appears & disappear.
BTW, after the installation of Gnome packages was over, I got a message - possibly about my usb bt & wireless adapters.

Re: [Solved] linux-5.6.0-0.bpo.2 stucks at "waiting for /dev.... udevd"

@fsmithred: The udevd worker delaying 3 minutes at boot - This problem again emerged after I did some . When I removed modemmanager package, the delay at boot did not appeared again. This package adds some rules in the /lib/udev/rules.d/ folder. Don't know why it interferes while booting. (I ran ls -halt to see the recent changes in /lib/udev/rules.d). I believe modemmanager may be the trouble causer.

Presently, I have weird issue of nautilus not showing thumbnail previews and gnome-control-centre->Details>Users not able to select  a custom image as my user logo. Silly thing, I know. But, it was working before. It seems Gnome3 on Devuan has some rough edges, hard to troubleshoot.
