ethernet and login manager concerns

(my computer is running Ascii with MATE) One day I woke up to find that my computer had either rebooted or logged me out or something like that, I was at the login screen for devuan's default login manager which I think is slim.  I tried to login, and it took a while before reporting that the login had failed or something like that.  I can login from tty1 etc. but that gives me no graphical user interface.  What's more, ever since this incident, ethernet connections don't work with devuan on this computer anymore.  On the other hand, ethernet connections on this computer work just fine in debian stretch which I happened to end up trying.  I don't know how to do a WLAN connection from the terminal, so effectively on the devuan ascii install that is on the internal drive of this laptop (which is the main subject of this post), I have no internet connection.  now, the login manager thing is not really that much of a concern, since if I can somehow get the packages for lightdm, that will probably work (another devuan ascii install that I'm using with this laptop does let me login via lightdm).  But I have 2 questions:

1.  How can I get the packages for lightdm seeing as I have no internet connection on that install and devuan does not seem to offer the packages via web site like debian does with packages.debian.org?

2.  What's going on with my ethernet connection?  If you need more information to figure out what's going on with this please let me know how I can provide it.

In general if you need more info please let me know how I can provide it.  I am currently using this other install of devuan ascii which is on an external hard drive and uses lightdm.

Thank you very much for reading this.

Usually we need to know the gore details. Let's start for posting the result of running the order dmesg.

1.  How can I get the packages for lightdm seeing as I have no internet connection on that install and devuan does not seem to offer the packages via web site like debian does with packages.debian.org?

Given that you can boot up some other partition/system with network connection, it should be easy enough the use chroot to the failing partition/system, and then use apt-get as per normal for it.

E.g., if the failing partition/system happen to be /dev/sda5, you would do the following, starting in the working system:

# mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
# chroot /mnt
# mount -t procfs proc /proc
# mount -t sysfs sys /sys
# mount -t devpts devpts /dev/pts
# apt-get install lightdm

That would install lightdm to the failing partition/system, which I assume is correctly set up as to its sources.list.

Note that the three later mount commands are not always needed; it depends on what you want to install. In fact, in some cases you also need to ensure there are nodes for /dev/sda and /dev/sda5 in the chroot file system, but that certainly shouldn't be needed for a lightdm installation.

To exit gracefully, you would first umount the three points within the chroot, then exit and umount /mnt.

Re: ethernet and login manager concerns

The plot thickens.

I tried the chroot, and it seemed to work mostly fine, although I think it was the procfs mount that did not work, and it gave me this during the installation:

invoke-rc.d: could not determine current runlevel
[....] Reloading system message bus config...Failed to open connection to "system" message bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
invoke-rc.d: initscript dbus, action "reload" failed.

After all that, I booted back to the system, and lightdm showed fine, but when I tried to log in, it said it could not update the .ICEauthority file.

EDIT:  Oh, um, oops.  The dmesg output was from the operating system that worked, so, I guess that's useless.

another edit:  But, I don't see how I'm supposed to save dmesg output on the OS install that is not working right.

Re: ethernet and login manager concerns

At a guess, you have set up your machine to share /home between systems, but "forgotten" to synchronize the UID of the user(s)...

Re: ethernet and login manager concerns

I looked up why this kind of thing might happen with the .ICEauthority and found it can be related to home permissions and sure enough I did not have write permissions to my own home directory for some reason.  So I fixed that, logged in, and it was pretty expected that consolekit was not liking lightdm after I had read the release notes, so I just switched back to slim and it worked fine and I uninstalled lightdm since I did not need it anymore.

So now half of this whole thing is solved.

But there is still the concern with the networking.  So let's see here.

Maybe this dmesg output will actually help since it is from the right OS install:

Re: ethernet and login manager concerns

It seems to me that the low level staff of eth0 is right in your two systems. The relevant line of dmesg being:

r8169 0000:04:00.1 eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx

So, I think that the difference could be the logical configurations. Do you have installed a network manager (network-manager, wicd,...)? In any case, please post your /etc/network/interfaces
