[solved] [MiyoLinux] connection issues - catch 22

I have got myself into a catch-22: I have a really old Acer Aspire 3003LC laptop, and it has no working networking ports. So, I've got a Vodafone Mobile Wi-Fi R206-Z "dongle" which I connect to a usb port. I need to authenticate, so I usually launch a web browser, type in the address http://vodafonemobile.wifi, enter my password and connect.

But Miyo doesn't come with a web browser, so I can't do that. I've tried a few .deb files that I've got (vivaldi, palemoon) but the installation fails because of missing dependencies. I can't install them because I'm not connected to the internet...

So, I can't connect to the internet without a browser, and I can't install a browser without connecting to the internet.

Not a good day.

One of the downsides to Miyo...

If anyone has a better answer, feel free. smile

This may be a pain, and I've never tried this, but this is what I would try...

If you can use the computer that you wrote the post on...

1. Go to Mozilla, and download the firefox tar.bz file for your architecture.
2. Open the tar.bz file on that same computer.

Miyo comes with unzip.

3. Zip all of the contents into a .zip file and put it on a USB.
4. Boot Miyo, open the file manager, and insert the USB.
5. At the prompt, open the USB in the file manager.
6. Go to the .zip file's containing folder, and click "Tools" in the bar. Choose to open the terminal.
7. When the terminal opens, enter...

unzip the-file's-name.zip

8. After it has been unzipped, open the containing folder, and double-click the executable (it should be named firefox).

Firefox should open. Nothing is actually installed...

That's not what I'd call an elegant solution. But thanks...

Well...as I said, I know it would be a pain, but for the situation that you described, that's the only solution that I could think of off of the top of my head. I know (from past conversations) that you're aware that Miyo doesn't come with a browser pre-installed. That's the whole ideology behind Miyo..."make it your own"...let the user decide what goes on their system...which means the browser too.

I realize that periodically, there will be situations like you've described, so I apologize if things didn't work out like you hoped, but thank you anyway.

No problem! It turns out that I have a copy of seamonkey.zip so I'll give that a try.
Thanks for your help!

Re: [solved] [MiyoLinux] connection issues - catch 22

I tethered my old Samsung Galaxy S4 to the USB port.
I now have internet access.
I feel like an idiot for not thinking of that earlier!

Thanks again for your help smile
