Seeking depth in the era of the ultra hyped mosaic 'AI'
I read on ultra hype social networks hype news on hyped 'AI' about lonely 'AI' creator that create movie clips that make big movie studios tremble!!.
And i do believe that !. (well .. not the trembling part..) .I believe that a 'lonely' creator tapping vast comp resources on big data centers that run LLM fed with billion of stolen images (so basically tapping on millions of human's work...) can create a good video clip that make you wonder why on earth you should pay actors when you just record an image.
You put together so much humans , so much life and what do you get? A series of images. So if all you get is that .. and you can create that in a ''lot lot cheaper''(1) way then why do you need human actors ? (interestingly special effects -cgi- was a prelude to that ).
So i wonder where that lead us. That production that tsunami of impressive data surface challange us in a certain way. You hear a voice on the phone of your wife and you think.. is she ? You see a video of a politician speaking and you think .. is s(he) ? You read a blog post and you think is (s)he ? You read code of a program and you ask 'who did that ?
So what gives depth in human endeavors ? What is god-ly - impossible to immitate ? Human interaction of course.
Speaking of 'surface' computing... i think of pixel perfect desktops. Again some think that the money is there. To grap attention and thus money you must throw pixel perfect images . Again no depth.
In Blade Runner androids were given memories (depth) .Why ? Because without them they were becoming unstable. That plot-arc is carried to the end of one movie seeing the Deckard's daughter becoming an expert at constructing 'real' memories. I wonder if the opposite direction is possible . Human fed constantly with superficial ever-changing memories becoming less human.
For Rick Deckard an escaped humanoid robot, which had killed its master, which had been equipped with an intelligence greater than that of many human beings, which had no regard for animals, which possessed no ability to feel emphatic joy for another life form's success or grief at its defeat - that, for him, epitomized The Killers.
Strangely .. Voigt-Kampff Empathy Tests seems a case of science fiction idea that fits perfect in our current predicament.
(1) 'lot lot cheaper ' is a matter of perspective . data centers need a lot of resources .
