[Solved} Miyo Awesome - no sound

Apologies for posting two questions on the same day!

I can't get any sound using Deadbeef or VLC on Miyo Awesome. I'm not sure when this started, or what I did to break it.

Inxi reports the following:

Audio:  Card Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel
           Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.9.0-7-amd64

I've tried re-installing the codecs (libavcodec-extra ffmpeg flac) and I've checked that my volume isn't muted. I've also checked Alsa, and the volume controls are at maximum.

Thanks for the post. Your solution solved the sound issue I was having on dwm(window manager)/devuan install (no desktop chosen)and quodlibet.
Devuan inspires experimentation.
