#202 Re: Devuan » Getting rid of "frankenstein" packages » 2024-02-20 18:13:02

I had a similar problem (dist-up* didn’t help), of course it’s better to reinstall, it’s faster and the result is without surprises. If there is a separate /home partition, this is quite easy to do. And if not, then it's time to do that too.

#203 Re: Devuan » Getting rid of "frankenstein" packages » 2024-02-20 18:02:16

Example using synaptic, first disable unnecessary repositories and reload them.

#204 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] app wants libxalan-c » 2024-02-20 09:53:15

This is a link to the libxalan-c111 package.
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/ma … _amd64.deb
Taken here
https://debian.pkgs.org/10/debian-main- … 4.deb.html

I downloaded it without problems, installed it, the synaptic shows two versions that do not interfere with each other.
Brewtarget installs and works, Daedalus 5.0.

@GlennW
My laptop, Daedalus 5.0+Trinity DE+chromium+system monitor tde=176 processes. You have 778. Or did I misunderstand gkrellm?

Regards.

#206 Re: DIY » [SOLVED] GNU/Linux laptop as router, vpn router, or wifi repeater » 2024-02-19 17:37:32

The idea is interesting, but one thing is not entirely good.
I don’t know how it is in other countries, but our cost  ALFA AWUS036ACHM   is approximately the same as TP-LINK Archer AX1500 Wi-Fi 6.
https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-network … er-ax1500/

But repeaters are simply much cheaper.

#207 Re: Other Issues » Extracting a .zip file absolutely destroys my CPU. » 2024-02-18 10:12:16

I once had a problem with writing an image whose size exceeded the size of RAM using the dd command while simultaneously turning on tmp in memory. The recording just froze. When I turned off tmp, the problem disappeared.
Then, with newer kernels, such errors did not occur.

#208 Re: Other Issues » Clear logs » 2024-02-18 09:47:31

Amen!
Now everything is clear, I didn’t realize it right away. smile

#209 Re: Other Issues » Extracting a .zip file absolutely destroys my CPU. » 2024-02-18 08:53:55

Not sure if this will help.
Look at the memory usage when extracting a file from an archive.
The only time I saw 16GB fully used on my computer was when copying a 30GB file, Linux was using memory for the buffer.

#210 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Can't connect to repos » 2024-02-17 18:59:15

There are objective reasons for choosing. For example, my DE Trinity has support for network-manager in the form of a graphical interface.
And subjective ones... like “what color to paint the fence” are different for everyone. smile

#211 Re: Other Issues » Clear logs » 2024-02-17 14:05:57

It's nice to be in the company of literate people! smile

But can someone explain why all this fuss with rm /var/log/boot.0 ?
Will we replace cron and logrotate?
And what does SSD have to do with it? Has the number of rewrites become smaller due to this?

But SSDs are actually good, especially for older laptops with weak processors.

#212 Re: Other Issues » Clear logs » 2024-02-17 10:31:36

There is a logrotate command.

logrotate -f, --force Force file rotation

The log is needed during setup, if everything works, why not completely disable it?
And turn it on if necessary.

#214 Re: Other Issues » Modem throws CME ERROR 50 (incorrect parameters) on ATH1 » 2024-02-16 12:33:33

I specifically posted a screenshot with the entire list.
I wonder if the problems with it are only in Opera or image hosting?
Until now, it seems that this has not happened.
Even Konqueror opens without problems for me.

#216 Re: Other Issues » Modem throws CME ERROR 50 (incorrect parameters) on ATH1 » 2024-02-16 11:18:07

@TCH
Devuan Daedalus 5.0.
The screenshot above shows the synaptic window with installed programs. This is what they are.
Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about the modem with voice communication.

Regards.

@GlennW
Cooling can be checked completely objectively. My SSD supports smart and shows the temperature. And there are stress tests for the processor. Lenovo limits it to 10 minutes on its test disk. The temperature of my laptop's processor rose to 72 degrees and did not rise further.
Old radio textbooks said that reducing the operating temperature by 10 C doubles the service life.

@pcalvert

or an inexpensive Android smartphone with a fairly large screen

Then at least well-known brands.
I had two of them, one 10" with a bluetooth keyboard (China with Polish brand), the second 7" from this "company"
https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/brand/18201a2
Both died in the 3rd year due to memory failure.

The last one is noteworthy.
After the end of the warranty period (1 year), the technical support site where there should have been updates stopped opening. And in the second year, some other one opened instead and installed some other programs. I had to do a hard reset.

I was left with the impression that the refusal after the end of the guarantee was planned in advance and was done programmatically. Maybe I'm wrong.

I just gave up on androids and bought a small used laptop.

Regards.

Daedalus, the laptop has a device for SIM cards, I placed a link to download the firmware on the desktop, but I have not tried the SIM card itself yet.

#219 Re: Other Issues » Modem throws CME ERROR 50 (incorrect parameters) on ATH1 » 2024-02-15 21:32:04

@TCH
There may be different firmware options for a modem of the same type. Only for one provider or accepting SIM cards of any, etc.
I don’t know what program you use for commands, there is a Modem Manager and a Gui for it. He can show you the details.

P.S. I was messing around with this a year ago, trying to unlock the modem or get my push-button mobile phone to work as a modem. The latter's chipset supports this, responds to commands via USB, but does not want to work.
A fun activity! smile

Regards.

I don’t have Huawei 3372, but from previous experience with USB modems, incl. Huawei, they just don't support voice communication. The modems themselves, the operator blocks such a function via a SIM card, etc.
There's something about this here
https://www.journeybytes.com/how-to-mak … with-your/
A possible solution is VoIP.

#221 Re: Other Issues » Clear logs » 2024-02-15 17:25:39

I just disabled the rsyslog service.

P.S. Just in case, this is not recommended with systemd.

#222 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » wasted $ on multi function keyboard and mouse » 2024-02-15 08:22:21

I ended up late in life with one of the first keyboards I ever used: a ca. 1995 IBM Type 'M' keyboard made by Lexmark.

I had one like this with 486.
Wonderful thing, tactile, auditory feedback and all that.
It's a pleasure to type with her.
One drawback is the loud clicking sound. When my youngest son was learning to type touch-type, there was a clunking noise like in a typing bureau...

Even then, after a while the drivers/modules stop being maintained or supported and a kernel upgrade sends their usability down the loo.

This is possible if it was originally a proprietary driver compiled by the manufacturer for one version of the kernel.
While tinkering with assembling the kernel for myself, I became convinced that the latest ones retain all the codes that were once used in the kernel.
Another problem is possible: function keys must be supported by DE. Minimalist ones often suffer from a lack of solid support.

My forum experience dates back to 2005, and when I came here I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly spirit and mood of the forum. Of course this is the merit of the administrators.

This is not meant as petty sycophancy, but rather “what needs to be said must be said.”

The contents of SMBIOS can be viewed from Linux.
https://www.baeldung.com/linux/bios-access-info

P.S. I really don't know how this can help.
As far as I understand from the experience of fiddling with laptop BIOS, any surprises are possible.
Win replaces the BIOS entry with its own submenu.
Well, if the Win license key is flashed into the BIOS, you can reinstall it.
If not, replacing what was preinstalled by the manufacturer is either impossible, or even blocks entry into the BIOS.

#225 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » wasted $ on multi function keyboard and mouse » 2024-02-14 09:09:08

The middle mouse button for pasting the contents of the clipboard is a legacy of Unix, which is how it differed from Win in ancient times.
Later “innovations” are usually commercial products and Linux comes last for them.
I'm afraid of them and I've never had them.  smile
