#201 Re: Other Issues » amprolla.devuan.org is not online » 2017-11-30 09:01:58

I'm taking the opportunity to ask my question without opening a new topic. Just yesterday I also noticed "amprolla.devuan.org" down source.
Currently moved to "packages.devuan.org"

This is my sources.list now:

#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 1.0 _Jessie_ - Official Beta2 i386 NETINST Binary-1 20161129-14:56]/ jessie contrib main non-free

# Devuan repositories

deb-src http://packages.devuan.org/merged jessie main contrib non-free

I want to know is all right ^here? or a change must be done.
This sourcelist is generated from a NETINST ISO installed months ago. I use Jessie (oldstable).

Thanks for any feedback!
Kindly regards!

Seamonkey is a good alternative.

Regarding "static compiled binaries"

Pale Moon doesn't have any GTK3 / pulseaudio dependencies yet, hope will never have it.
I just hope they'll let the user to install or not GTK3/pulse/other/crap*

While Seamonkey have still GTK2 on default, i do not know if ALSA is their default sound tool.

Both great Browsers alternative to Mozilla Firefox. I use Pale Moon, Seamonkey is my 2nd preference.

#203 Re: Installation » [Solved] How to install the new version of Firefox on Devuan? » 2017-10-21 17:28:53

For memory Mozilla Firefox requires by force GTK3, pulseaudio and some day soon systemd to use it.

It's called "backporting".  It's generally what you have to do if something you want isn't available.  It's actually more or less how the Debian backports started out.  Originally they weren't official repositories but as time went on, got absorbed by the project.

It's far better and more rewarding to learn to do it yourself, than hanging on in the vain hope that someone else will do it for you...

Good luck and stick with it.

I do not have much experience compiling or making a .deb package. I have done once or twice (successfully) but not much,
Everything for my needs got it from Debian/Devuan repo.

Now that want something outside official repositories, I must do myself some tasks.
Indeed DYI is way better and rewarding in the end is worthy.

You can build it in a chroot or VM which you completely trash afterwards.

Good suggestion, but I dared without it. tint2 is not a big deal, i can go without VM.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I'd not give up doing install from source, even though the first time did not go that well. I'll make this with all my modest strength smile

#205 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Tint2 Backport Repo? » 2017-10-13 16:06:09

OK! I will do it! Very acceptable suggestion. I should have thought of this possibility early.

I'll make this work a go now...

cynwulf wrote:

You could built it from source... i.e. create your own backport from the package source in the unstable repository.

Thanks for your suggestion cynwulf, I should have noted that i did not wish to compile because there are too many dependencies to install:

sudo apt-get install libcairo2-dev libpango1.0-dev libglib2.0-dev libimlib2-dev libgtk2.0-dev libxinerama-dev libx11-dev libxdamage-dev libxcomposite-dev libxrender-dev libxrandr-dev librsvg2-dev libstartup-notification0-dev

translated into my system

I'm honestly not interested throwing inside all these packages on my bare-bone system, I look backport as a practical way for me.
Perhaps I'm asking too much, but i saw on BunsenLabs they've made a repo for tint2 and a few other packages.

I thought if there was such thing here too. My research for tint2 backport didn't find much.

Once again thank you for your suggestion.

Hello! Is there any backport for tint2 on Devuan Jessie? I really want to touch the recent changes of tint2. But Jessie prevent me.

I don't want to change jessie sources.list to (test/sid) just for tint2, If there is a chance only to update tint2 via backport, I would be very interested.

Thanks in advance!

How do I see what updates are installed on my system?

From your terminal use:

cat /var/log/apt/history.log

or,

nano /var/log/apt/history.log

Other... navigate with your file manager to the directory "/var/log/apt/history.log" then open it with text editor "history.log".

Edit: Debian Security Advisories (DSA) bulletin for the security information / upgrade.

Jessie DSA

On one of the recent security bulletin Debian Security Advisory

I'm looking forward when they'll provide security update for Jessie. I hope they'll not delay too much.

#210 Re: Installation » no updates ... » 2017-07-03 20:15:40

Within 10 days i got security updates for:

Start-Date: 2017-07-03 09:56:04
Commandline: apt-get upgrade
Upgrade: libgcrypt20:i386 (1.6.3-2+deb8u3, 1.6.3-2+deb8u4)
End-Date: 2017-07-03 09:56:08
Start-Date: 2017-06-28 11:57:13
Commandline: apt-get upgrade
Upgrade: linux-image-3.16.0-4-686-pae:i386 (3.16.43-2+deb8u1, 3.16.43-2+deb8u2)
End-Date: 2017-06-28 11:57:39
Start-Date: 2017-06-25 16:26:22
Commandline: apt-get upgrade
Upgrade: libexpat1:i386 (2.1.0-6+deb8u3, 2.1.0-6+deb8u4)
End-Date: 2017-06-25 16:26:24
Start-Date: 2017-06-23 09:48:39
Commandline: apt-get upgrade
Upgrade: libgraphite2-3:i386 (1.3.6-1~deb8u1, 1.3.10-1~deb8u1)
End-Date: 2017-06-23 09:48:43

So, i got 4 updates within 10 days. It always depends on how or what packages we've installed on the sys.

bigbenaugust is correct, Debian/Devuan stable gets only security updates.
Also darry1966 is correct, we gets security updates up to 2020.

For more look at DSA Debian (Debian Security Advisories). Many security info appear here too.

We'll get updates for 3.16 series up to 2020, So do not worry. 3.16 is a LTS kernel.

If there would be a news or changes for this kernel in a way we'll get to know.

Yeah... I just tried sudo shutdown and it worked. I will just say, ignore all my kshutdown comments, sudo shutdown is better. hehe.

Ofcourse that will work, It is the basic shutdown command of the system. I'm still using this one, but what greenjeans says is correct

greenjeans wrote:

Still not as quick and cool as merely hitting alt+p and getting a quick 3 second shutdown.

sudo shutdown is it not so practical even i'm using it. policykit-1 tool with a config shortcut like alt+p It's more simplicity.

As long there is support for Jessie which will last until 2020. The kernel 3.16 does not have to be excluded from updates (security at least).
Indeed good news regarding speeding up the stretch release.

#215 Re: Installation » [Solved]display resolution » 2017-06-01 18:13:17

Hi! On my .xinitrc /home i use this command for a single monitor.

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 75

My resolution is 1280x1024 as well. This is my xrandr output.

xrandr

First time to hear about obsession. I'll give a check definitely. Thank you greenjeans! This looks very minimal, only one package to install.

Edit: obsession looks like an openbox helpful shutdown tool while i use a tile wm, I have no other choice than using policykit-1 or edit my /etc/sudoers.

#217 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Shutdown and root passsword » 2017-05-31 14:56:46

Topic interesting this one. I thought to try kshutdown on my minimal setup.
WOW just Cool! I didn't imagine that would bring so many goddess smile

Edit: Oh just i see now this is a KDE tool right? Isn't for me anyway...

I'm better staying with sudo shutdown or do not exclude the possibility of installing policykit-1. Afterall i used previously on Debian jesssie and i was pretty happy. policykit-1 wants to install only 6 packages in the end. Good solution looks to me.

30MB WOWOW smile I don't believe i'll see the end of tunnel with my current efforts for that tiny setting.
Currently doing (devuan netinst) with zero tasksel selected is enough for me.

#220 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » networks managers comparison and some notes » 2017-05-04 05:10:18

I prefer the simple traditional way of modifying data interfaces

/etc/network/interfaces

DNS location

/etc/resolv.conf

For desktop users without wireless and a single wired cable, i find it a lot more simple and less RAM usage.

If i start Debian with 25MB(systemD) / (spectrwm) 31MB RAM i bet i can start Devuan to 10MB / 20MB smile

netinst is more less size than official netinst. Now I have busy my official netinst copy, but one day I will definitely try devuan for some reasons.

Thank you for your work and new forum home.

Kind regards,
