Maybe the devuan team should think about provide the rss.

We already do on the index page of https://devuan.org/ under the Get Devuan header:

You can also download Devuan using our release torrent or magnet link.

And at https://files.devuan.org/devuan_ascii.torrent and https://files.devuan.org/devuan_jessie.torrent

mate-system-tools has been removed some time ago (last release : jessie).

gnome-system-tools should provide same functionalities.

Right.  I couldn't remember the name of that pkg.  Thanks.  Yeah, that's what I have in my ASCII VM.

Maybe thats the way to go.

Good luck, Rolf

I also use the oracle packages.

That's an xfce thing. Other desktops have their own management tools.

There are user GUI management tools in xfce?  That's news to me.  In fact, I'm using mate's version of "Users and Groups" (at your suggestion years ago) which I think is in mate-system-tools. I set things up so long ago, I can't remember exactly.

I know that Synaptic Package Manager is installed which is great, but an average user couldn't find new software using it.  So if an 'app store' of some sort was present that would be great.  I tried 'sudo apt-get install gnome-software', but for some unknown reason, it will only show me whats already installed and nothing online.  I may have messed that up, because at first I tried to install it using a debian package.  I have since tried to reinstall via command line, no success.

Then new users need to do some reading.  wink  Also it's a _very bad idea_ to install directly from the debian repos.  The Debian repos are provided by devuan via a filtered redirect so you won't install something dependent on systemd and bork your system.  The list of banned pkgs is here.  You will find in my sig a link to search devuan packages.

No GUI third party/proprietary drivers program like 'software-properties-gtk'.  I know that doing a google search would also yield the correct drivers.  But it would be nice to have a program that would search the hardware of your computer and offer additional drivers.

Have you enabled non-free and contib in your sources.list?

I guess PPAs aren't supported, or maybe I don't know how its done in devuan.
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/deepin-sc
aptsources.distro.NoDistroTemplateException: Error: could not find a distribution template for Devuan/ascii
I would question using this OS as my main because I may run across a scenario where I desperately need something installed and it has to be done by PPA.

We do not have ppas in Devuan though there are some unofficial projects in our gitlab.   The Debian wiki is quite clear about not mixing repositories.  The same goes for Devuan: Don't make a FrankenDebian

Repositories that can create a FrankenDebian if used with Debian Stable:
    -  Debian testing release (currently buster)
    -  Debian unstable release (also known as sid)
    -  Ubuntu, Mint or other derivative repositories are not compatible with Debian!
    -  Ubuntu PPAs

No GUI user management.

Mate has a pkg for user management but can't think of the name atm.

Another minor thing, I thought I needed the 'desktop-live' distro because thats what I've learned to do..  So I downloaded that first, tried it and successfully installed it.  But it was kinda hell to do so.  Extremely complicated install.  Once installed not everything was right.  I have since figured out that I needed the 'netinst' instead.  I would really like to try and get the 'Refracta' stuff to work and customize/make my own ISO that would be hardware independent.  I have yet to give that a shot.

We have a walk-through of the desktop-live installer here that might be helpful.

Welcome aboard the Devuan train to freedom!

Sure, if there are responsible people willing to organize and promote it.  That takes a LOT of planning that has to be done on the ground wherever it would take place and $$$ to pay for venue etc. up front and be willing to take a possible loss.

this doesn't seem like a good practice at all.  !?!?!?

So far, that connection is "harmless" (according to those who know better than I).  If that ever changes, we'll be scrambling.  It's similar to libpulse0.  Even though I don't have pulseaudio installed some apps still look for it so it needs to be there.  Feel free to join the libsystemd0 decontamination team.  smile

#2211 Re: Other Issues » Update for libsystemd0 » 2019-01-15 16:11:55

The other option would be to remove the hook in all the packages that call it.  Unless we have many more devs to remove these, we're going to have to live with it.  We actually did a pretty good job in jessie but the list is growing with each new release.

#2214 Re: Installation » Problem booting encrypted LVM » 2019-01-13 16:06:14

The cli install follows the same process as the graphical installer.  We'll be putting together a Visual Guide for that before too long.  The important bit in the para that I quoted is that a swap partition cannot be encrypted.   Hopefully fsmithred will be back soon.  He could help you sort this in no time.

@golinux: No offense, but I'm not cool with your 'compile it yourself' advise every time someone asks for the inclusion of a new or updated package. Yes, I could compile stuff myself, but then I'd be installing s/w outside of the apt tool chain, so what's the use of that? Taking that a step further, if I install tools/apps outside of the package management tools provided by Debian/Devuan, what's the purpose of a package manager? Then I could just switch back to Funtoo, which is a source-based distro anyway roll

Fair enough . . . But please consider that Devuan's purpose is to provide an OS free of systemd.  We do that.  It is not "our" job to provide every package that a user may want.  Why?  This is a USER-supported effort.   If you would like to see the youtube-dl package included in the Devuan repos, great!  Please offer to build and maintain it for Devuan so ALL users can benefit.  Just don't expect a non-essential package like that to be maintained by someone on the Devuan team.  That's not our job.  Being uncool with that is hardly a productive solution.

PS.  Advice is a noun.  Advise is a verb.  wink

#2216 Re: Installation » Problem booting encrypted LVM » 2019-01-12 17:10:19

I have never done encryption but noticed this in the section on encryption in the  Visual install guide  for the desktop-live installer that I just put together with fsmithred.  A careful reading might give you some clues.

3.2) Encryption: The installer can only encrypt root and home filesystems. A separate boot partition is optional and will be unencrypted if present. For full protection of your data you should not use a separate swap partition. If there is no swap partition, a swap file will be created on the root filesystem and that will be encrypted.

Thanks.  Never heard of that one.  I don't dl something often but use vlc when I do.

*edit*  So I poked around a bit and found advice not to use sudo pip.  I'm not saying it's not OK just providing info.

#2218 Re: News & Announcements » [package bump request] Youtube-dl » 2019-01-11 16:49:43

First, make sure a newer package isn't in backports etc. at https://pkginfo.devuan.org/
If not, submit a bug report at  https://bugs.devuan.org/ and send the report via email
Or compile it yourself.

No.  Those letters were created just for the "Devuan" logo.

@hellekin . . . The four inner planet, the D is the orbit of Ceres. The font is Fira Sans Thin with 15px rounded stroke. The E is based on a U.

You can see it's genesis here.

#2222 Re: Installation » backports: how to prevent incompatibilities? » 2019-01-08 16:49:38

Just want to make sure you understand that <release codename> will need to be replaced with jessie or ascii (without the < >).

When devuan was just starting, there was some testing of amprolla that merged the main repos with backports and I got a bit burned by that so I always comment backports even though I know it's OK to just use -t.  Not a problem since I really don't need anything from there.

#2223 Re: Installation » backports: how to prevent incompatibilities? » 2019-01-07 23:48:55

@thierrybo . . . He installed this package from the DEBIAN repo directly so will your solution still be valid?

I don't know if amprolla will recognize and update packages installed directly from Debian.

HextorBRX wrote:

2) indeed, everything is on devuan.org but also in /etc/apt/sources.list

Then why would you use Debian repos when it says this in several places on the website:

Devuan package repositories are exclusive. Other repositories, including Debian, Ubuntu, Mint etc, should NOT be used directly.

HextorBRX wrote:

3) since there is no security support for packages from backports, all I have to do is install the backported package, uncomment those lines, and update-upgrade my system as usual?

I'm pretty sure that the backports repo in ascii is pinned so you must use `-t ` to download and no need to comment.  You'd have to ask  on the debian forums whether you would have to comment those lines from their repo.  Probably wouldn't hurt.
