So what would is the number 1 issue when it comes to the devuan installers ?
I run fairly old hardware by todays standards so im thinking its current models of computers that are the main issues, newer systems and even newer newbies coming in for the linux experience. I started off using ubuntu years ago, back in 2006 or 7 i think, didnt get it and went back to windows then came back to linux in 2009 and started using linux lite i think and then distro hopped from there to arch, debian etc. If you are prepared to put the time and effort into learning how to setup your machine with linux in different ways it is well worth it and as time goes by if you havent fried your motherboard or put one too many zeros and ones on your hdd the you will have gained an education of sorts free of charge.
I admit when i came to debian and tried to figure out how to install a desktop environment i was bamboozled on what to download, put to cd or usb and install. First time i did i downloaded the live only image that didnt have an installer. When i came to devuan i saw they had a nice torrent file that had all the needed files you could want in one download, but first make sure you know what happens with torrents before you download them and look at the file tree.
More than anything in the realm of linux one needs to implement a fair amount of due diligence before commiting it.
I tried this today on an lxqt netinstall on a dell box i have. After the initial massive upgrade (1.1 GB) and reboot the 4.18 kernel did not boot up for me just hung at a black screen so i tried the back ported 4.17 kernel image and it seems to work for my box. I did have issues with the right gcc compiler for the headers for 4.17 and commenting out the ascii repos in apt/sources list except for the ascii backports repo then update and upgrade did the trick to get the correct compiler package for the headers. Im not on that machine now but i pinned lxqt-policykits backends and elogind and haven't had any issues so far rebooting or powering off. Ill post the pin file i used tomorrow as im not on that computer for now. Anyhow just wanted to babble a bit and say thanks for this thread, helped me get to Beowulf/testing using lxqt.
From here how could i help devuan using testing?
I just have to point this out.

"1. User confusion and frustration. A user-friendly experience does not start with "Oh no, which installer image do I pick?" and follow with "Oh, shit, I got to the 43rd prompt and realized I got the wrong installer, now I have to waste time starting from scratch." A user-friendly experience starts with a frictionless install in which the user is guided through a fanout of installation types by questions from the *one* installer."
then says...
"Debian practice: Don't install those blobs by default. Require user to explictly opt in or out to proprietary things as a class *before he/she knows whether any are actually needed*. (At least I think this is Debian behavior. I've never done a Debian install; it could be worse.) Make a big ideological deal about being "pure"."
So if you have never done a Debian install, your frustration it seems is not really based on any facts is it, or am i missing something here?
Most linuxers are running non-free computers Kuleszdl, think about it.
Hi Keos,
Maybe MX17 has control over grub configs. Are you modifying the config files from MX17 or Devuan?
If you have installed MX17 first and installed grub to /dev/sda with MX17 then you need to modify the theme from MX17 i believe.
Currently i have Crows Devuan installed 1st to boot and use Crowz Devuan grub boot files, so if were to modify any other dual booting systems grub configs (themes etc) on other partitions i would need to install grub to the HDD from those partitions and have the grub configs run from there.
Well done all involved. Onwards and upwards!
The grub tips and tricks area is a helpfull resource ,
^ I tried the latest Void musl based lxde distro and had it working ok for a day or two until my keyboard and mouse stopped working. Not much has changed for my laptop regarding musl based linux spins, still buggy as hell. I really wanted void to work but anymore than 2 hard resets and im out.
Hi, ive always thought that eject disk to be the better option to safely remove usb's. Im pretty sure eject makes it safe to remove where as unmount just unmounts the drives partition or partitions, dont really know the specifics of either in a technical sense.
Ron wrote:Should we consider this as good news or bad news? Or neutral news?
As a Devuan user, I consider it neutral. Now, if they'd bought out Debian...
I foresee below headlines in the future...
"Microsoft aquire Debian, vow not to change opensource".
"Github subject to MS Service Agreement"
James, to be optimistic i believe that devuan will find a way through this and continue init freedom.
Slackware has been around for a very long time and will continue to do so, Devuan seems to be heading in the same trajectory.
Well said Altoid.
systemd is very much akin to ms registry, never really thought of it that way.
Not knowing enough about xfce i would point it towards xfwm at being the culprit. Openbox i have no issues with this type of thing.
I get this too, i thought it was just my mouse.
Only happens in my xfce4 box as i tested this out today in my lxqt openbsd partition and didnt happen.
In xfce4 thunar, it will either open a new tab or create a new folder as soon as i right click into white space sometimes, i usually have to hold the right button down to ensure it stays within the rightclick menu there, most times its just a fidily fuck about nusance.
Probably, dont really know.
what specs have your laptop got and what resource intensive stuff would you be doing if you dont mind me asking?
^ i will have to look into it, thanks && thanks golinux.
Hi! :-)
I'm having difficulties with older or less popular formats.
Hi Giorgos,
What formats?
To answer your question, ive never had issues. I prefer the flac format when i rip a cd to the computer, larger file size but the sound is 100 times better than say mp3 etc which goes without saying really. Flac is in the repos, after all it stands for "free lossless audio codec".
^ I used to use 7zip to encrypt files but then i found veracrypt a better way and it is pretty much distro agnostic not to mention it has the ability to use keyfiles and more advanced cryptography.
^ you should probably should do an update first before installing any packages.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
bitmap fonts maybe?
I dont really understand the issue?
If i understand correctly you cant find build-essential in the devuan repos ?
its not build-essentials , leave the plural out of it.
@refracta:~$ apt search build-essential
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
build-essential/stable,now 12.3 amd64 [installed]
Informational list of build-essential packages
Also check out this web based search engine for devuan packages.
Boot Init Through Computer Hardware
The only other thought that doesn't require massive loads of manpower to brute force package maintenance is a dedicated init script converter from one init system to another. But... it would have to be like... flawless.
I'm spitballing here. Anything to lower the level of unnecessary pain this is going to cause.
Maybe something like a Lua script, ala conkyrc to conky.config ?
