@mtbfr: netif looks alive to me. Try googling "netis".
What website address do you have?
Hi kuleszdl & bbatten,
I recommend using adapters that work with the ath9k driver and do not require any non-free firmware.
You might look at the netis AC1200 dual band (model WF2190), based on the RealTec 8821AU.
Thanks for the feedback.

Recommendations for Small Travel Router supporting Access Point Mode

Also, it seems that netis may be defunct.

Hi Folks,
With regards to my earlier topic, it seems that USB 3 Wireless Adapters, supporting Access Point Mode under Linux, are a rare beast.
I've now decided that a Small Travel Router like the following is a better option if it can also support an Internet Connection from its LAN port to my Laptop when operating in Repeater mode.
GL-iNet Slate (GL-AR750S-Ext)
https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-ar750s/
Does anyone have recommendations for those?
Thanks, MTB.
Hi Folks,
The Network scenario I want to achieve is for the Laptop to receive the Internet connection via the RJ-45 Ethernet port and then to share that connection to the Wireless Adapter using WPA2 without broadcasting the SSID so that I can download updates for my Android phone.
Which USB 3 Wireless Adapters can any of you recommend to me?
Thanks, MTB.
I don't have this problem myself, but a quick round-trip through the cloud suggests that man libinput is a good source of learning the property names. In particular they seem to have libinput rather than "Evdev" as their first word.
Hi Ralph,
I replaced Evdev with libinput but the same errors were recorded.
Hi Folks,
As per the following page, I have tried using the xorg.conf.d method using the file /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-thinkpad.conf by using "Lite-On Tech Lenovo USB Travel Keyboard with Ultra Nav" for the MatchProduct option but to no avail.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_co … TrackPoint
With MX17, I have the "xinput set-prop" method working but when that is used in Ascii the following errors are reported in .xsession-errors in the /home/user-name/ directory.
property 'Evdev Wheel Emulation' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format
property 'Evdev Wheel Emulation Button' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format
property 'Evdev Wheel Emulation Axes' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format
property 'Evdev Middle Button Emulation' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format
property 'Evdev Middle Button Timeout' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format
What's missing?
Thanks, MTB.
Hi Folks,
I installed Ascii yesterday and these issues were/are still a problem.
The system detects their presence but they were/are not being mounted by Thunar.
If I Check "Import digital photographs when connected option" for Cameras in the Volume Management app, a Notification is displayed in the top right corner of the screen indicating "Camera detected" "A photo camera was detected". The same Notification is displayed when I connect the phone too.
If I look at the permissions under /dev/bus/usb/003/, for example, for the newly connected device, it says that the Group plugdev has Read & Write permissions and my User Name belongs to that Group.
I installed gphoto2, gphotofs and ifuse to no avail.
eudev is installed and I have noticed that neither udev nor udevil are installed. udevil suggests pmount. Are there any possibilities of success with those?
I've been using MX Linux since my last try with Devuan. Both devices are added to the Tree View of Thunar's Side Pane and Right Click to mount for example as "gphoto2://[usb:001,006]/". I can use the phone as an Internet Hotspot also.
The following are installed in MX17. I think I have covered all the pertinent packages.
gphoto related packages
-----------------------
gvfs-backends 1.30.4-1
libgphoto2-6 2.5.12-1
libgphoto2-port12 2.5.12-1
iphone related packages
-----------------------
ifuse 1.1.3-git20171008+1
libimobiledevice-utils 1.2.0+mx17-1
libimobiledevice6 1.2.0+mx17-1
libplist3 1.12+git+1+e37ca00-0.3
libusbmuxd4 1.0.10-git20171008+1
mx-idevice-mounter 0.1.5.0
mx-iphone 0.1mx17
python-imobiledevice 1.2.0+mx17-1
python-plist 1.12+git+1+e37ca00-0.3
usbmuxd 1.1.0-3mx17+2
udev related packages
---------------------
libudev1 232-25+deb9u4
udev 232-25+deb9u4
udevil 0.4.4-1+b1
usbmuxd 1.1.0-3mx17+2
Thunar 1.6.12
So, I installed gvfs-backends, libimobiledevice-utils & udev.
After a Restart, BINGO for my Fuji Camera but still nothing for the phone. However with the Fuji I can't directly open the files as only root is given permission to access them via Thunar even though under /dev/bus/usb/003/, for example, the same permissions still exist as mentioned before. However, I can copy them to another device.
Next, I installed libplist3, python-imobiledevice & python-plist. Still no go with the phone.
Next, I installed udevil, zenity, zenity-common & pmount. With the Fuji, as above, I still can't directly open the files. Still no go with the phone even after a Restart.
So, what is the missing piece or are the missing pieces to the puzzle?
Thanks, MTB.
I have no idea. Try without. Then the next option would be to log out/in. Then a reboot if all else fails. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Sorry it took me a few days to get around to pulling out the camera to get the info.
Nope, no joy.
Do I need to restart the session for the installation of gphoto2 to take effect?
I have an old Canon Powershot (PTP) that wouldn't mount on Jessie. I can't remember how I got it working but it now automounts at gphoto2://[usb:001,056]/ with root permissions. A notification pops up and the directory appears in the Thunar side pane tree.
That directory contains these sub-directories,
DCIM - photos are here
MISC - emptySo you might want to install gphoto2 and see if it can find your camera at least. Some searching on the above might give you additional hints. No clues about your phone - don't have one.
That's funny I suppose as the following are installed but not gphoto2.
libgphoto2-6
libgphoto2-l10n
libgphoto2-port10
I'll install gphoto2 now and see what happens.
Another note of info for you all to consider is that I am using a HDMI connection from my Laptop to my monitor for Audiovisual purposes.
What happens if you just remove pulseaudio? Will you lose anything?
I have an old dell laptop with jessie installed. No pulseaudio, no xfce4-volumed. I use volumeicon-alsa to control the volume, and it has the same XF86Audio settings as your amixer. I can change the volume with the buttons and the indicator is visible on screen.
Are you saying that volumeicon-alsa has the same entries for amixer in the Application Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard app?
There are 5 packages installed for pulseaudio as follows.
libpulse0
libpulsedsp
pulseaudio
pulseaudio-module-x11
pulseaudio-utils
I'll remove the above and test.
If no luck with that, I'll then remove xfce4-volumed.
If still no luck, I'll install volumeicon-alsa.
I've just noticed that there is a package named libasound2-plugins installed. This package depends on libpulse0 and pulseaudio depends on libasound2-plugins.
I guess I'll try removing libasound2-plugins also but I'm just stabbing in the dark with this stuff.
What a maze?!
There is also an entry for PulseAudio Sound System in the Application Autostart tab of the Session and Startup app.
I'll try disabling that first to see what happens.
Is xfce4-volumed updated to a devuan package or is it a debian package?
Looks to be a debian pkg.
Maintainer: Debian Xfce Maintainers
Installed and Latest Available are the same.
0.1.13-5 (stable)
Sometimes jmtpfs is sufficient.
My Fuji camera is PTP and it doesn't detect the iPhone 3GS neither.
Have you checked Thunar's Preferences? Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>Volume management
Enable Volume Management is already checked.
Mozilla? What is that?
Which browser are you using?
If you're not using pulseaudio and don't want to use it, install apulse first. it's in devuan repos now. (in experimental)
I've used retroshare in the past. I don't know their current state. It uses gpg keys for authentication.
Are there any alternatives that can connect with people who are using skype?
As per my Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute keys not working Topic there is a mixture of Alsa and pulseaudio software installed. Will this apulse package fix the problems I have noted in that topic?
Can I add the following to the /etc/apt/sources.list file
deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/devuan experimental main
... to point to the following location?
http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/devuan/di … ary-amd64/
Can I do this before installing rsyslog and upgrading to ascii?
Thanks, MTB.
Hi All,
Is there a package for Skype somewhere?
Thanks, MTB.
Hi All,
The iPhone and my Camera are not being mounted by Thunar but as you can see below, via the lsusb command, the system is seeing them.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 05ac:1294 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3GS
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04cb:01c1 Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd FinePix F31fd (PTP)
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks, MTB.
It appears that xfce4-volumed may be the likely culprit.
If I add the following, to the Application Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard configuration app, the keys function correctly but the Volume Level Indicator does not appear at the top right of the display.
amixer sset Master 5%+ XF86AudioRaiseVolume
amixer sset Master 5%- XF86AudioLowerVolume
amixer sset Master toggle XF86AudioMute
There are packages preinstalled for both ALSA and Pulse Audio.
Given that Pulse Audio was created by the same Rat responsible for systemd (vomit), should not we be using an ALSA based system for the management of Sound and associated devices?
Should I file a Bug report for this at https://bugs.devuan.org/ ?
I've installed Devuan Jessie to a Hard Drive partition and this fault exists in the installed environment also.
Thanks, MTB.
Hi Folks,
Just doing some further testing before installing and I noticed that the Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute keys are not working.
When I press the Volume Up or Volume Down keys, the Volume Level Indicator appears at the top right of the display and the level bar increases or decreases but the Sound level is not affected.
Did some searching on the web but not sure what I should do (e.g. Adding commands to the Application Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard app).
xfce4-volumed is running.
Some further info; Task Manager indicates the following programs are running.
gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor
pulseaudio --start
start-pulseaudio-x11
Whether or not they are associated with the problem I can't say but it may give someone else some clues as to what the solution may be.
xfce4-mixer is installed but not running but is the Command associated with the Desktop Configuration file for the application named as Audio Mixer.
Thanks, MTB.
I hope to give this a go later today/tonight. I'll let U know how it goes.
MTB.
From jessie to ascii 4.9 comes automatically in my experience, and I believe 4.11 comes with ceres, but
you will still be running 3.16 while you are doing an upgrade. When I do such hops I don't care about the next kernel as much as about the transition. I like to update/upgrade what is most essential for the transition, even though in 99% of times it may not matter. I like to upgrade apt,dpkg,synaptic,,.... first and then rerun the update/upgrade with whatever tool is used. The new tool is always safer doing the edition hop, even though it is running on an older kernel which I have yet to see a problem with. I always keep 1-2 kernels backup just in case the new runs into a bug.
So, to clarify things then, your plan would be as follows?
Install rsyslog as per the instructions of @fsmithred.
Modify the sources.list file to point to ascii.
Upgrade apt using the apt-get upgrade command.
Upgrade dpkg using the apt-get upgrade command.
Upgrade synaptic using the apt-get upgrade command.
Run the following commands in Terminal.
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
Install the 4.9 kernel.
Which command should I use for installing the 4.9 kernel, apt-get update or apt-get upgrade?
Thanks, MTB.
You might need to install the newer kernel manually - if so, look for linux-image-4.9-something. And you can always add the -s option (--simulate) to see what will happen before you really do it.
Can and should 4.9 be installed before updating the sources.list file and running the apt-get commands?
Or should it be done after the apt-get commands?
Oh yeah. I'm not sure of the current status of rsyslog. If it looks like it wants to cause problems, you can install rsyslog from backports (or else replace it with syslog-ng or busybox-syslogd.
Maybe some other problems. It's been a few weeks since I've tried an upgrade to ascii. Be flexible and you'll get there.
Which of the following should be used for rsyslog?
