Slashdot has posted a story about a major flaw in PolicyKit, a widely used SUID utility in many Linux distributions. The arguments in the comments started quickly about whether this is a "systemd specific" problem.

So, is it really a systemd specific problem? Is PolicyKit found in Devuan or other distros that do not use systemd? In other words will there be a patch for Devuan?

Just for giggles I tried to install Grand Theft Auto 5, meaning I tried to install the Epic Games installer, which could then (hopefully) install it. Got a wild string of error messages and this also crashed:

or equal to 2.0.5.

Just putting the directly in the 'games' group was not enough. Something in Lutris checks the ownership of the directory and refuses to proceed, so I had to actually chown the directory to the ordinary user. After that it would at least proceed and try to install. But there were more obstacles. sad First, it wanted something called Esync, which seems to be related to systemD, but there is an alternative to manually edit a config file to create a huge limit on number of file handles you can have open at once. Then it wanted something called wine-mono which the Debian wiki says is not included in Debian, deliberately. Why not? It had to be downloaded from the Lutris site.

Then it was able to get the installer for Star Trek Online on the desktop. But when I click it, it just dies. The error log is this:

One other thing I thought of. Having to download some of these large MMOs over my DSL connection would be too time-consuming. Is it possible to copy the game into a folder on the Linux install and get it recognized by the game manager? Or does the installer have to run to create the virtual Windows settings? -- Directories, registry, or whatever.

Hey, great idea! It should have occurred to me. I am familiar with basic *ix security controls. This way, it would be possible to have multiple users on a single machine able to play the installed games without needing multiple installs, too. (Not needed on my personal gaming machine, but still a cool thing...)

Is this problem specific to Devuan? Or is it found in Debian also? Could this problem be referred up the chain to Debian package management? It looks like something in the proprietary drivers installation needs to be revised.

My gaming install has a broken package related to the nVidia proprietary drivers. Every time I run apt/aptitude to install something, it tries to fix the problem package but cannot. The same string of errors occurs every time:

Looking into running games in Linux, I have found some problems with some of the major options.

First, Play-on-Linux seems to have not updated for the current version of Debian. Their download page only describes how to install in Jessie and Stretch, not Buster even though that has been out for years. Has this project fallen into neglect?

Since there wasn't a good option for PlayOnLinux, I tried Lutris. This at least is up-to-date enough to have Buster support, and by inheritance Beowulf support. After some struggles to get all the components it expects installed (mostly Vulkan-related libraries), I tried to install a game and it complained that the location I wanted to use (the /opt partition) was not writable by the (normal) user I was logged into. Is it typical for these game managers to put everything into the /home directory? 

So, if I prefer to keep the games in a separate partition, can I change the mount permissions for the /opt partition (it is a completely separate isolated partition) or is that considered a bad thing to do? I deliberately created it as a separate partition when setting up this install to make the game collection easier to manage.

How does Proton handle games that aren't packaged specifically for the OS, like most Windows titles would not be. Does it also put everything in /home?

I was not clear about the 'misfeatures' being in fancontrol, not the pwmconfig utility for setting it up. It's fancontrol that has to run in a window, unless there is also something that runs it as a daemon that was also installed and I didn't notice?

Yeah, I hadn't got to that part yet, just talking about routine usage like word-processing, email, and web browsing, but there is a game component to the migration away from MS. I've got some MMO habits and don't want to give them up. In a worst case scenario, I might have to keep a Win 8.1 machine only for gaming and never use it for web browsing once the security support ends. But eventually games will stop supporting 8.1 and then it's get things to run in Linux or keep a special machine running 10/11/whatever just for gaming.

Proton is supposed to be good, but can you use it without signing up for Steam? I'm thinking Play on Linux or Crossover if Proton is tightly bound to a Steam subscription.

Yes, you will get some fragmentation if you run your storage at 90+% capacity. The easiest answer is "don't do that", but even if you do the performance impact is nothing like the nightmare you get on a fragmented NTFS volume.

Granted, it's not a good idea to run very close to capacity on any FS for a variety of reasons, but I think defrag is more necessary than most of the *ix purists like to admit. Keeping the system partitions with actual programs separate from the mass data storage partitions helps, too.

Yeah, that's supposed to be the really outstanding FS for protecting data. MS is currently struggling to duplicate it with their "Resilient File System" (ReFS), but still recommends even servers use NTFS most of the time, I believe. Since ZFS is *BSD native, there is some sort of a license conflict and it's not easily available in Linux. I would probably have to use a dedicated NAS hardware device with one of those *BSD OSes to use that.

I've been in the habit of keeping multiple backups for years anyway, even with NTFS. That would certainly not change if I moved to Linux, but I might have to occasionally delete and re-copy the entire contents of a volume to defrag it. Seems likely to cause excessive wear.

Well, it's good to find out those are scripts! I simply increased the delay time in pwmconfig to 20 seconds and it now finds the right fan. Fancontrol now technically 'works' but it has two misfeatures. One, I can't run it automatically. It's a script and has to have an open window to run in. Seems a bit kludgy? Is it possible to setup a shell script to run at startup and stay running? Two, when it exits it sets everything to MAX. This is bizarre. Why? The whole problem with fans is that they run at max by default. It should leave the fan speeds alone when it exits. Since it's a script I can probably fix that. Hopefully a shell script can't get too complex and difficult to understand...

Just FYI, here is the config file it generated which I think has all the relevant technical data:

This is a difficult topic to classify, so I'm not sure where to post it. As Windows becomes more and more locked down, forcing the 'users' to live with Microsoft management decisions on their 'personal' computers, I'm getting more motivated to stop using it altogether. Win 8.1 goes out of support next year, and I don't want to 'upgrade' to 10 or 11. They have clearly learned from the example of Google and Android successfully manipulating everyone into using their 'service' layered on top of access to the phone system, with all the money-extracting conditions they have imposed. MS is also in the process of converting our "personal computers" into 'computing as a utility' and billing for monthly usage. Oh and making even more money by surveillance of the user base. I'd like to ditch the MS kiosk and have control of my own system. Escaping the Google kiosk looks more difficult, since Android alternatives are scarcer and installing them on tiny little devices is trickier, but I do hope to get there also. Escaping MS seems within reach now.

There are some unresolved issues, though. And maybe a few I have not thought of.

First, e.g. -- How do people here (presuming most of you are MS-free and rely on Linux or other independent OSes) store their personal data? On your PCs? Or do you have independent storage using something like FreeNAS? All my data would have to move from NTFS, which is at least stable for all these years, to something else. Is EXT4 a good FS for storing large amounts of data? Despite the claim that Linux does not need defrag, it eventually does when you have drives filled close to capacity and are gradually adding and deleting files (as you do with personal archives). Does EXT4 have defrag? Does any *ix FS have defrag? Is some other FS considered best for long-term storage of personal data?

That's one issue that occurs to me immediately. There are probably others. Does anyone with experience moving their 'lives' from the MS Kiosk to something else have any thoughts?

Since my system rarely needs the CPU fan running at high speed, I tried to install fancontrol to reduce it when running Linux and reduce wear on that fan. But oddly, even though SpeedFan in Windows can find it just fine, the utility that is supposed to identify fan control ports for fancontrol cannot seem to identify my CPU fan. But I do notice a long lag time between adjusting the pwm setting in Speedfan and a real change in the fan speed. Since it only waits 5 seconds, I'm wondering if this might be fixable by somehow tell pwmconfig to wait longer, like maybe 15-20 seconds. Is it possible to do this?

I don't see how you'd have to 'retype' the whole thing. All I'm wondering is which exact directory is used by Debian/Devuan. I put the config files in etc/X11 just to see if that would make a difference and it didn't seem to change anything. At least brightnessctl works. smile

Well, your scripts look to have the same functionality as the brightnessctl command, but without the report on current settings ability. So unless I can get the keys working, this is good enough.

If /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is not the right place to put config files, I'd like to know which of the numerous alternatives is the right place in Debian/Devuan? There are other config files in this directory on my beowulf laptop systems. The config for the touchpad, for example.

A bit of searching turned up a thread on this forum about the eth0 problem:

ifup wait at boot

As I suspected, it was a simple error in a config file. The fix given works on my system, too. But, I installed Beowulf with the same installer on both laptops. Weird that this only cropped up on one of them. Computers are apparently not as 'consistent' and 'reliable' as we have come to assume. Too much complexity, I guess.

No progress on the backlight keys, but there is a nice little utility in the repositories called brightnessctl. It can find and change the screen backlight brightness, but it's a manual command-line only thing.

Trying to get the keys to work, so far I have tried two different config files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

The problems with Ascii were frustrating, but the release of the next iteration of Devuan pushed me to at least not fall too far behind. smile So I have re-installed, not upgraded, Devuan 3.1 on my two laptops that were still running 2.1/Ascii. The system partitions were formatted and the new version freshly installed, but the /home directory was kept intact. This seems to have worked well over-all. I got everything I could think to test working on the Gateway system. Settings for accessories like Gkrellm were preserved. Even the brightness controls that don't work by default were operational when I followed the steps I got from an article on how to fix it. But the other laptop -- an Acer Aspire 5733Z -- has a couple of annoying problems. The brightness controls do not work, for one thing. They were working with Ascii after following these same steps.

The steps were:

* cp 10-backlight.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-backlight.conf
(a config file)
* install xbacklight
* edit /etc/default/grub
  add "acpi_backlight=vendor" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
* run "update-grub" to make it active
* add "handle-brightness-keys" under xfce4-power-manager
   make it boolean and set it true

The last step is actually done automatically by installing xbacklight anyway. The gateway system uses function keys for the backlight adjustment while the Acer uses arrow keys. Could that have something to do with it? Some other possible reasons I can think of for the difference is that the Acer is using XFCE while the Gateway is using Cinnamon. And I deliberately changed the display manager on the Acer from the default slim, which I have learned from reading here has not been updated in many years, for lightdm. There are no other apparent bugs so I'm not inclined to change it back yet.

The Acer has one other odd problem. While booting it will stop for a loooong time. It seems like a full minute. The message is:
ifup: waiting for lock on /run/network/ifstate.eth0
It finally realizes the interface is already configured and continues. But why does it take so long to realize that?

I did not choose the display manager, I simply got whatever the default is. Is there some reasonably simply config file that can be changed to use a different display manager?

Yes, I'm getting seriously interested in upgrading. This string of disabling screwups is really getting frustrating.

Well, it at least booted into kernel 4.9.0-16 after the recommended repair commands. Today I simply ran 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade' and rebooted to see if everything still worked, and it did not. This time it froze in the middle of entering the password. Could not unfreeze it. Had to use hard power shutdown again. It still boots into 2.9.0-15 though.

This time the kernel had not updated. But some other packages did. Not expecting any problems, I had run the updates, and shut the laptop down without testing whether it could boot. But the next time I turned it on, it was unable to get to the desktop, like before. Here are some logs:

Yes, I was able to install the latest updated of the version 16 kernel and it works. Interesting note: One of the messages I saw scroll by as it was installing was about uninstalling icedtea-netx. Hmm... Since this was a solo install, no other packages being processed, that had to be triggered by the kernel install.

Well, I think I will get the full package name using search and just do an install -- if that is an allowed way to install a kernel. Since the core of the OS is different from any other binary, I was not sure if that was an OK way to do it. Hopefully there won't be any hairy dependency problems...

Every time I have asked about Trinity desktop in any Linux forum I see these claims that it is hugely insecure due to being such an old code base and no one with any sense would dare use it.

First, how can a desktop be a security risk? You are using it locally. Does the desktop code have any connection to the networking code?

Second, is this claim of 'ancient code' remotely true? Just because they forked it from KDE 3.x doesn't mean they haven't fixed any bugs since then. That's the point of the fork, to get control of the code. smile
