sorry, found only later out that i needed program "Bumblebee" or similar since the laptop has Nvidia + Intel.
However, the instructions on Debian Wiki wont work for getting usable desktop, atleast on Devuan Ascii.
For Devuan Chimaera it seems the Bumblebee is not supported for my graphics card, since it is too old.
I tried with Debian Wheezy, there it would install, no problem.
Now i am testing with Ubuntu 16, it seems functioning well, however the instructions on Ubuntu Wiki are different than on Debian Wiki.

For Ubuntu wiki it states (for those wanting to use Nvidia Proprietary Graphics

sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic

whereas Debian wiki says 

sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia primus

for Devuan i tried with the above, but it was not possible to get a working Graphics Desktop with XFCE (didnt even try hard, have to admit)

i tried that,
apt-get upgrade installed nvidia-persistenced, with 0kb additional space.

however, upon reboot, it seems not functional
as also geekbench compute-list confirms

Hello,

on al Laptop T420 with dedicated GPU Nvidia NVS4200 1GB
installed Devuan Chimaera,

and afterwards attempted to install the proper driver for Nvidia Card as it seems it not installed in first place.

so i choose to install "Nvidia-Legacy-390xx-driver" and lot of packages get downloaded, installed, but at the end get error

  Errors were encountered while processing:
 nvidia-persistenced
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Please tell me how to properly install the driver, if possible, thanks.

well, thanks, after installing wicd, i have the network icon (wicd-manager i suppose) in the panel,
but after every reboot, or startup, there is no internet;
i then need to manually "disconnect" and "connect" throught the wicd network manager.

Hello,

on an older laptiop i have a nice 1920x1200 native resolution,

but legibility is poor due to TN Panel, and admittedly it is a bit small to read (maybe my eyes need more training)

so i'd like to set the display "fractional scaling" to 125% , a bit like on Windows 10.

Only setting i have found is to set manually tthe "DPI" value which atm is set to "96".

Can someone please show me how to achieve this on XFCE without the need to resort to XRandr?

network-manager-gnome seems not installable; maybe i had used "deb-multimedia-repository" previously on jessie, might have made confusion.

have upgraded to computer to Beowulf and
encountered the following

the "Restart" and "Shutdown" button is greyed out;
the computer is functioning normal well,
but i seem not be able to hibernate/suspend and restart / shutdown via the Applications Menu command.

Is there something i am missing?

have installed the Firmware-AMD-package.

Hello,

on an older ocmputer upgraded from Jessie Devuan to Beowulf

now i wanted to install ProtonVPN manually,

and found out that the Network icon (Ethernet) is missing in the Panel-Bar.
Adding New Items to Panel does not yield, since there is no Network Manager Item there, only Wavelan and Network Monitor.

Also i seem to miss any Network entries in "Settings" and "Settings Manager".

Maybe i am missing the appropriate Package?

the network seems to function just fine over Ethernet.

to achieve this, would be nice to have ADB ready, but it seems this tool is missing on Devuan.

It is possible that the driver and firmware manage the fans too poorly. amdgpu-fan is a tool that allows you to manage the fans of the graphics card to better control the temperature. Unfortunately this open-source tool is not available in the Debian repositories, you have to install it from python-pip3:

alright, the trick seems to be to initiate the "other" opening within Firefox itself, then your "strange" routine would actually initiate the proper gdebi-password-routine,
however, if the same .deb file were to be opened solely upon within Thunar, this would not allow for the initiation of the password retrieval procedure?

just to make sure we are ion the same page:

1. Devuan 4.0 64bit XFCE4 standard
2. random .deb > instead of left click > right click > open with > open iwth other application > choose from "recommended applications" > gdebi package installer .
3. phoronix-test-suite_10.8.2_all.deb would  say "Status: RequireS installation of 9 packages" > clicking "Install Package" > would result in window "going" away with no password being asked / no result.

therefore i cannnot reproduce your workaround here,

Hello ,

i am using Devuan 4.0 64bit as Linux OS and am quite please with it, thanks for that!

Noticed the following issue: when i click a .deb file, it would open "package installer" aka "GDEBI",

however, after checking for dependencies, when clicking "Install package" (for installing the .deb file) the window would go away, nothing would happen.

Remember that standard procedure would be being askied for root/ or user password and afterwards package would install properly most of times.

I am using XFCE and have not found a way yet to restore this functinality on Devuan 4.0 , besides using gdebi via terminal, which is a different approach, but i like graphical mode aswell.

Am i missing something?

checked again, ubuntu seems fine, but it has different entry in /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 127.0.0.53
options edns0
search home-life.hub

whereas Devuan shows (on the same Computer)

nameserver 192.168.1.1
search home-life.hub

EDIT: it seems that after reboot, the OpenNIC setting is deleted; but today, the downloads seem fine, in terminal it takes only around/under 1 second, to initate the download/installing process. It is still noticeably faster on Ubuntu, though.

@xinomilo, wow, big thanks ! using another mirrored fixed.

don§t know what changed, but with this "openNic" the download-things was superfast!

was thinking there is something wrong with my computer or cable , as i noticed also on ubuntu 18.04 LTS a big lag .

I moved the Computer into another room, and the cable is maybe 10 - meter long, and a little bit "twisted" here and there, but everything seems ok , otherwise, just those terminal commands taking way too long for my experience.
for now this seems a great "fix", but still am a bit baffled because of those delays in normal mode.

@xinomilo , thanks i tried this opennic by just inserting

ns7.de.dns.opennic.glue

ontop of /etc/resolv.conf , but apt still takes around 10 seconds to initiate. (less time if smaller packages, but no regularitiy, time varies consistently)

Tried also with aptitude, seems even slower.

I dont know if need Avahi, took it only because as sample at hand.

opening webpages most of the times is reasonably speedy.

removing 

mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return]

would not make any noticeable difference, if any, it took even longer to initiate the install of packages.

Really odd behaviour, the computer should be capable of being fast enough for simple tasks.
