#76 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » PulseAudio always resets to mute » 2023-07-17 07:44:41

zapper, it's grand that you've added some more intel about this minefield,
I do wax lyrical some you know, we all try and that's not dumb.
Now I am introduced to sndio, there's a wikipedia page and packages.debian Description search found 11 matching packages.
I suppose we all gather intel from many sources of course.
All the docs are greatly better these days in it, certainly Arch Linux.
Distro's that I spin to troubleshoot, well Knoppix, thesedays easyos certainly, MX Linux is greatly popular.
Pipewire appears to be the way forward, I buy that, head on a sticks two penneth.
So actually pulseaudio is my best friend because it appears to work some magic under the hood and hey presto asound.conf then works and can be configured as total as you like.
Thanks zapper.

#77 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 21:09:25

apt-get --no-install-recommends install
is what I've learned recently

#78 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 21:06:26

Thats for Chimaera,
for Daedalus it's,
elogind libelogind-compat libelogind0 libpam-elogind libpolkit-agent-1-0 libpolkit-gobject-1-0 libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0 policykit-1 policykit-1-gnome pkexec polkitd polkitd-pkla
thats with Chromium, maybe falkon is different.
What it is is the same which is gnome surveillance

#79 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 20:58:01

I also dpkg --force-all -P elogind libelogind0 libpam-elogind libpolkit-agent-1-0 libpolkit-gobject-1-0 libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0 policykit-1 policykit-1-gnome
and then I apt-get download or dpkg -i libsystemd0
and it ain't broke at all whatsoever.

#80 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 20:52:59

I'm no professor and certainly no doctor just an amateur.
I don't really know what rsync backup means.
I am familiar with some startx problems, I dusted that by installing xserver-xorg-legacy, and /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config contains two lines, allowed_users=anybody needs_root_rights=yes
give it a shot, take you 2 minutes

#81 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 20:18:33

Thank bejesus we're not fooling around with systemd or whatever the frack it's called.
Seperate matter, ifconfig eth0 hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (ifconfig wlan0 hw ether  `/usr/bin/hexdump -n6 -e '/1 "02x"' /dev/urandom`,) works, I don't give two hoots what anybody says, random MAC by wpa does not work, and random MAC by systemd does not work.
I suppose I must be a hairy shirt or some nonsense because I use wpa and things like post-up iwconfig wlan0 txpower 15 | rate 5.5M,
if you really want to have a seizure from laughing too much, take a glance at the man page for iw.
I wonder if the interweb would fall over without ifconfig and route, amongst other things.
It's really super that the Devuan netinst iso got net-tools on it.
Try to tell em nowt.

#82 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-16 19:57:41

rename /etc/init.d/S20slim (or whatever it's called,) to _S20slim, and I'll eat my hat if it don't work, I'm not joking!

A "safe, slow and stupid," computing method is genuine computer lingo.
This is done with Windows 10, I bet 11 is the same.

The following method will not touch the Windows Boot Manager on your computer (which sometimes can for sure break it;) this method is super oldschool booting with an external storage device, nowadays not a floppy disk but a USB stick. Using an external bootloader/boot manager, is how I boot my computers.

Put all your movies and stuff on a stick and free up all that space on you hard drive, shutdown, power on.

First, defrag, Menu - Windows Administrative Tools - Defragment and Optimise Drives.
Shutdown (when a LED light on your laptop has gone off, it HAS actually powered down/off.) Power on.

Second, shrink your Windows hard drive to free up some space to create a partition to put Linux on.
Perhaps certainly the best way is to use Windows Disk Management, Menu - Windows Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Right-click the shaded box (probably C:.)
Shrink Volume.
Shrink space, say your 'hard drive' is 64GB, 16GB (16384MB,) is quite plenty indeed, even for a full-fat Linux distro.
Do the safe slow stupid thing and shutdown and power on your computer because Windows will appreciate that, after the changes.

Tasks;
Procure any old USB stick, the smaller the better.
Download rufus and download refind (refind-flashdrive zip file,) and unzip (extract,) the zip file (right click it.)
Run rufus and 'install' refind on the stick.
Subsequently, Windows will show that it does not recognize the stick, power off your computer and remove the stick.

Howto boot your Devuan stick.
The simplest way to not boot Windows but boot the USB stick is to go into bios/firmware.
Power on and at the same time tap tap tap and keep tapping away at the F2 key (some computers it's the ESC or DEL key.)
When you get into bios, TAKE CARE.
First, absolutely essential, disable fastboot and secure boot, save and exit and tap tap tap back in again.
Navigate to Boot Menu, obviously you need to boot the stick.
(Another way is to determine which F (Function key,) is for Boot Menu (often ESC.))
Install a real, not toy, operating system, partitioning manually is super easy, install on that 16GB free space you created, forget swap partition - we're not pre 1970's, IMPORTANT, install ****'Continue without boot loader.'**** When you finish and reboot, as it reboots, you can tap into bios and push the power button and it will power off immediately.
Plugin your refind stick, boot menu refind, there you go, tab to, or click, the big red D. (Laters, I have edited refind.conf textonly textmode 0.)
Very very most gravely sadly, another bootloader, super grub2 disk hybrid, works on my mini desktop, but not on my laptop.
refind will not work on old computers (pre EFI bios,) perhaps super grub 2 will.

Be most most proud of your patience and endurance using your grey matter to do something creative, when I was a newbie certainly it was all gobbledygook to me.
Learn how to add 'noatime,' to /etc/fstab, to protect your SSD.
I suppose the best way to write a Devuan iso to a stick, is to use rufus (that other standalone dd tool is problematic,) in rufus, if you are offered the option, choose dd.
rufus is excellent, always shows the stick, whereas if Windows don't like the stick, it don't show jack nothing.

#84 Re: Installation » Install with Runit as the init » 2023-07-14 16:12:22

Just my opinion,
attempt to get grub4dos and put it on a stick
grub4dos is still maintained by a Chinese computer engineer (doctor.)
Limine appears to be the way forward, Barry Kauler at easyos is hot on it.
I'll eat my hat jacksprat if the problem is not the bootloader!

#85 Re: Off-topic » PHP joke » 2023-07-14 15:47:45

I know CCleaner and uBlock Origin are Windows friends.
I do not have webext-ublock-origin-chromium installed.
I run a super pristine snapshot, from startx.
My desktop, PCManFM UXTerm Beaver Chromium. (Viewnior Xpdf useful.)

Pre snapshot;
apt-get --no-install-recommends install chromium
rm -r /var/cache/apt/archives/*
user startx, open Chromium, settings - everything off, Intrusive ads - Any site you can visit can show any ad to you (Ads are blocked by browser is questionable.)
console; cp -r .config/chromium _chromium (running snapshot rm -r .config/chromium cp -r _chromium .config/chromium
dpkg -P chromium chromium-common

Boot snapshot toram,
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
dpkg -i -R /mnt/root/_browser # folder containing chromium chromium-common
apt-get update | upgrade
user, startx, open Chromium (creates .config/chromium,) Exit, Logout, substitute .config/chromium, startx

I think Bill spent country GDP developing a particular font, something like that.
dpkg-reconfigure console-seup is cool, on the fly, no problem.
Reaching out to most devices, I like to style with font-family:tahoma; although verdana is similar.
I wish we still had ttf-thryomanes.
Stanley knife ttf-dejavu and enjoy the ttf-bitstream-vera experience.
ttf-dejavu is sickening.

come stai

an idea, first try, dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
I do this for font size because I am veteran war photographer WMD eyes damage.
Of course, install fonts.
Also, for me, I like ttf-bitstream-vera,
I go to /etc/fonts and I tar -cvf fonts.avail.tar fonts.avail and I tar -cvf fonts.d.tar fonts.d
so I have created tar backups (try reading them,)
so I can rm -r fonts.avail and fonts.d
which fucks ttf-dejavu all the beeping time,
and does not screw updates

Often I am unable to login because the PHP is not working right (because PHP is crap.)
I suppose I could try the Aliexpress Android app.
When I need to login and chromium, firefox, falkon etc. fails, I use my mums Windows 10 with Edge browser, and it works.

#90 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » PulseAudio always resets to mute » 2023-07-13 13:30:01

Elegant way is to just use alsa alone.
Anything on top of alsa that 'modifies' 'enhances' sound file, is for retards, use ffmpeg.

If (like me,) you can not, for example, get sound out of your hdmi monitor speakers, all alsa configuration methods will fail, I tell you no lie, I am not the only one, we are many.

apt-get install alsa-topology-conf alsa-ucm-conf alsa-utils

/etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset

apt-get install pulseaudio pavucontrol

In GUI, run pavucontrol and setup configuration, e.g., I want sound out of line out on my box and my HDMI monitor speakers as well.

Purge pulseaudio and pavucontrol, I purge the flipping lot with debfoster (& rm /var/lib/debfoster/keepers.)

touch /etc/asound.conf

vi (or whatever,) /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 3 # my flipping HDMI monitor speakers
defaults.ctl.card 0

pavucontrol does something that makes alsa asound.conf 'work.'

Do `/etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset` again, and it will trash it.

A very clever person could tell us what pavucontrol 'modifies,' so we wouldn't have to do the pavucontrol thing, and we are many.
If somebody tells us what pavucontrol does, without actually doing it themselves, that's not very clever.
AT ALL

P.S., try pavucontrol before jerking around with modules, and firmware-intel-sound firmware-misc-nonfree firmware-sof-signed

but at the minute still preview 20230522

searched devuan_daedalus_5.0.preview-20230527_amd64_netinstall.iso
got that from lycos dot com, will look at startpage and duckduckgo

Perhaps the world could do with a drastic radical revision and software release in the spring which is autumn down under.
I say that because I am inclined to think that the engineers down under are the vanguard maverick, partly to do with being in proximity to made in China.
Programmers in Finland may go indoors when it comes cold, but unless you've lived in a hot country, you havn't got a clue what hot is.
I suppose, whatever China has got scheduled, will manifest.
The situation in my home nation is thus; too many Chiefs is absolutely completely lamentable to say the very very least, the road surfaces are not fit for donkeys, my passport should have US 53, on the front, that's the 53rd state of the USA, Ungreat Shitain.

Thank you very very much indeed fellas for the attention.

My BIOS is J3355B ASRock UEFI in big letters at the top of my display.
I always do one single partition.
I boot from rEFInd from a stick refind-flashdrive-0.12.0.zip 1992kB

I look forward to walking straight down the middle on main street, then I can install offline.

P.s. When I online installed Debian Bookworm RC 3 (chroot /target apt-get install sysvinit-core,) after, I installed refractainstaller-base and refractasnapshot-base. I got error so I tried ALL combinations of intel-microcode, install xz-utils, edit initramfs.conf.
I tried to keep intel-microcode but it had to go, I think it might be made of gorgonzola.

Hello Ralph,

Amongst other connected storage devices, I have a 8GB 667x Compact Flash on a SATA adaptor which I /dev/urandom and /dev/zero in no time, so blank disc.

daedalus preview 20230522 amd64 netinstall

have tried online and offline

Advanced options
Expert install
Partition disks - GPT - EXT4

After Install Sysvinit,
installer main menu does not come up so I can not choose 'Continue without boot loader.'
installer attempts to install GRUB.

Running "grub-install dummy"...
[!!] Configuring shim-signed:amd64
Unable to install GRUB in dummy
Executing 'grub-install dummy failed.
This is a fatal error.
<Continue>

No way out, stuck in a loop.

The Debian Installer Bookworm RC 3 is working normally and I get the main menu 'Continue without boot loader.'

Something has changed in the daedalus preview, the preview I was using before about a week or three was ok.
Andy.

add noatime to etc/fstab
mount a storage device, do my own firmware ath10k i915
dpkg -i
libdbus-1-3

libpcre2-8-0
libpcsclite1
libselinux1
net-tools
wpasupplicant

Booted OS and no /var/log/messages.
ifconfig hw ether MAC
ifup wlan0, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, installed some programs, incuding rsync.
Screenshot of ls -m /usr/share/doc is at,

I am dubious and wonder if this is a not small Debian/Devuan problem.
How many uses are their for tail -f /var/log/messages
see if the storage device you plug in is any good for a start.
