hello ,
ia m on fresh install of Devuan jessie on this laptop and it wont update since it is old laptop with graphics not supported by newer systems i suppose,
so my question is how can i best install newer firefox-esr (without need of huge dependencies) for devuan jessie?
it is because i want to turn into alsa-only laptop that i am not wanting to use the official firefox-esr ftp repository;
is is understanding that all the firefox-esr from devuan is alsa-only enabled,
thanks
thanks, it seems it is not possible to install libssl1.0-dev without uninstalling libssl-dev first,
which is too risky to me,
so i resorted to help from internet,
it is possible to extract also with the package "pkg-config".
Hello ,
i use at home also macintosh computer,
and wanted to extract a .pkg package under linux for further processing.
would like to install "xar" package
https://www.oueta.com/linux/extract-pkg … -on-linux/
however,
building fails, with error
configure: error: Cannot build without libcrypto (OpenSSL)
now it seems on Devuan Chimaera, the libssl1.0-dev is not available, but instead there is installed libssl-dev.
can i just install libssl1.0-dev from Debian Stretch or will this cause problems with libssl-dev?
thanks.
Hello ,
on the computer have 3 SSD installed
2 NVME with Windows 11/7 and the SSD for Linux Debian/Devuan;
the issue is that when installing newer version of Devuan/Debian, it would after installation only list one NVME in Grubmenu (the NVME0 with Win11) and disregard the second NVME (Windows 7); This happens on Devuan 3.0+;
installing Devuan 2.0 Ascii gets the Grubentries correctly listed
Devuan 2.0
+ recovery
NVME0p1 (Win11)
NVME1p1 (Win7)
however, since the APU is bit newer, it needs newer kernel to function correctly, and upgrading to Devuan 3.0 make me loose again the entry for Windows 7, and during the upgrade getting warned :
Warning: os-prober will be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.
Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/nvme1n1p1@/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
done
please have posted this already on Debian Forum since i started out on Debian and crossed over to Devuan,
any hints thoughts solutions welcome,
here the link to topic over at Debian Forums
https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php … 55#p772355
thanks.
thöank you,
it seems that on one laptop i had still installed tailscale,
and it was enough to set-up my whole home network;
after that same laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 was also no longer connecting to servers via apt-get ,
found that tailscale was there; and re-moving it completely, and rebooting modem, should have solved the issue (have not tested the Devuan yet, but i think this was the issue with failing to connect, since i had this before; one tailscale installation breaking havoc on home network > otherwise it seems an useful tool to connect to homenetwork from outside, but it created problems now more than once here , too).
Hello ,
on an older laptop could install Devuan Ascii after changing netsources during install to
archive.devuan.org
however,
after installation went through,
the computer would not connect to the sources when doing apt-get update.
What is the correct sources.list for Devuan Jessie and Ascii in 2023?
Thanks.
is it not that there is now a new "audio system" that is being developed or used instead of pulseaudio?
pipewire or similar? if yes,
will that come also to devuan i am asking myself?
i§d gladly use "alsa-only" as long as it keeps getting easier on switching sound-sources, which has been always difficult to cumbersome to implement everytime i tried.
Hello ,
noticed that on a computer that has 2 nvme (one with windows 7 , one with windows 11) and a sata ssd (where install devuan)
after new installation of devuan chimaera,
grub would after reboot only list
devuan
windows 11 nvme
but now not second nvme containing windows 7 64bit.
if i install on the sata ssd lubuntu instead of devuan, the problem does not occur; both windows version are listed and bootable;
if choose debian 12, the same rror as with devuan 4.0 occurs.
can please help me to include also the second nvme in the grub?
thanks!
thank you, yes, did not give the proper attention.
all should be good then.
Hello ,
tried to install samba & smbclient to have better network integration on devuan xfce 4.0,
but i noticed that the package "fuse" is being deinstalled.
My question: will this create problems?
is this package not necessary?
thanks.
sudo apt install samba smbclient gvfs*

Hello ,
have installed this service for accessing my NAS outside of the common homenetwork to which NAS is attached to.
now it seems it is not running on Devuan 4.0,
after installing it according to routine for "Debian Buaster"
manually like shown here
https://tailscale.com/download/linux/debian-buster
getting error
failed to connect to local tailscaled; it doesn't appear to be running
presume this is related to this system-d thing, have no other explanation.
is there a workaround for such issues?
thanks
Hello ,
i have an older A.series AMD Laptop which is really nice and got off Ebay for good price.
Unfortunaltely the CPU is not so strong and wont cope well with Windows
which is probably a secret blessing so i am now here on Devuan hopeing to get a good experience.
The fan curve is most annoying, it seems the older APU 7th series generates more heat than modern processors,
so i was hoping to tweak the fancurve as i could previously on other computers (eg. macmini running debian wheezy).
found this guide here, but it is for modern processor, and it has systemd implementation.
maybe some of you have already achieved a similar result on a AMD Laptop?
Other than fan-noise, and sometimes bit underwhelming processing, which is fine, the Laptop is beautiful.
here is the guide for reference
https://blog.monosoul.dev/2021/10/17/how-to-control-thinkpad-p14s-fan-speed-in-linux/
thank you very much.
yes, the NFS is enabled, i do use it only for mediasharing; but folder sharing is most easy on mac, although it does also not always function outside of mac userland;
at the moment, i can access all the shares from my linux boxes (have ubuntu and devuan as main Linux), but have still to find out how to share my files from Devuan Linux (XFCE) onto Windows orso.
thanks, it seems to function now, have installed "gvfs*" all inclusive, now it would show NAS as "timemachine" and "timemaschine (smb)" or so.
another thing, on ubuntu i noticed i can click on a folder and create a samba share for other computers to access to;
how could achieve a similar thing in devuan/xfce, it seems not easily doable with rightclick only.
Hello,
i have bought a new NAS and am exploring ways of using it reasonably,
trying to access it from another computer running Devuan Chimaera 4.0,
however, no luck, to access shared folders from XFCE File Manager.
Neither "Browse Network" nor "Open Location" (CTRL+L) seems to function;
have manually installed samba and smbclient; hope this did not mess somthing up.
Thanks
hello,
on my newer laptops the sound is very low;
used to uninstall pulseaudio and use only alsa on older laptops; the sound was better, somehow.
is it possible to get with withs "pipewire" better soundstage?
on the same newer laptops, with windows (7 or10) the sound is MUCH better!
thanks, had upgraded python to python3.7 manually, seems to have upset the system a bit.

hello,
infacto, wicd has not been removed, and is still enabled in "application autostart" , but not seen as widget in panel (nor add-able as item as such, only network items to be added to panel are "network monitor" and "wavelan".
shoud i remove it?
there is however, no other "network" box that i could tick instead that i am aware of (see screenshot)
https://ibb.co/zV9MDRz
thanks
EDIT: forgot to add that i have also installed "MATE Desktop" but it is not started/run; everything concerning xfce4;
installed also "connman", but there is no "network" entry in system settings to be seen.
EDIT2: removing wicd yielded error

hello,
would be glad if someone could give me additional advice:
on a upgrade from devuan jessie to ascii have a working installation on laptop;
however, would like to use "protonvpn" , and since devuan ascii based on Debian 9, it would have to be installed manually.
followed this guide here
https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-openvpn/
which on point nr.1 says to install
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome
which i did , and it installed quite some packages, but upon reboot , i lost my "wicd" applet in the panel,
and there is nowhere to be seen any network settings, neither in "Settings" nor in "Settings Manager";
This on Devuan Ascii 2.0, running XFCE4.
Please let me know how i can manage the Network settings on XFCE4 , and possibly add an OpenVPN connection.
Hello,
i tried this solution for my laptop, but i dont seem to get "suspend" working; when i close laptop lid, the system wont resume.
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=24694#p24694
before had used "Nvidia-Linux-x86_64-340-xx.run" (on Devuan Jessie an Ascii) and had no major problems, and resume worked fine.
But now , with Beowulf, if i would install Nvidia.run on a fresh install, and then let nvidia-xconfig create config file, after reboot there would be just a black screen. On Chimaera, it would not even install properly (probably due to 5.10 kernel).
do you guys have no problems with suspend and 340-legacy drivers?
on a different partition have installed ubuntu 22.04 and the 333/ppa for nvidia-legacy, and it works, also resume functions, but it is really slow, and would prefer devuan to use, but cant get to work it properly with newer fresh install of devuan beowulf (upgrading from devuan jessie to beowulf seems to work, though)
sorry but i am not very experienced with nvidia cards and linux in general.
https://launchpad.net/~kelebek333/+archive/ubuntu/nvidia-legacy
EDIT: it seems the problems with suspend / lock / resume from suspend occur mainly on XFCE4
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=991788
switching to Cinnamon does not yield these problems, so problem seems "solved" on this laptop with Beowulf;
however, the .run file from Nvidia 340
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/
does build correctly on latest 4.19, but would not produce a viable login on my laptop; i am still open to suggestion on how to solve this;
first the installer asks if he should blacklist nouveau (yes), then after reboot install the driver via .run which builds correctly, then asks if nvidia xconfig should produce config file (yes) and after another reboot instead of login screen greeted with blank screen and not even str+alt+1 does function from there.
Hello, any news to this thread?
Tried this yesterday/today on Laptop with FX 770m graphics,
but it seems Ceres not offering the desired solution (yet).
My Question: it has been alluded that it could be solved by using a backported kernel from Beowulf, but how to achieve this?
Installing kernel 4.19 + headers for it and just booting from it?
(EDIT: it seems there are no kernel headers for 4.19 on Beowulf Backports available).
Thank you.
hello,
i tried this tonight ,
but don't know if this solution is still viable for devuan in2022.
atleast one this laptop here i get the following error
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
winehq-devel : Depends: wine-devel (= 7.17~buster-1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
this happens on devuan beowulf for all 3 options (stable, developemnet or staging).
dont know if this applies to devuan beowulf in general, as i have upgraded from jessie probably up to beowulf, and in the process maybe used once or twice also the "deb-multimedia" repository.
same error with devuan ascii netinstiso.amd64 - faild to select and install software (via usb stick)
thanks
Hello,
just tried to install Devuan Jessie via USB from Netinst and FullDVD,
and both times failed
at the step:
select and install software.
first it would not find any network mirror,
so i would enter it manually (archive.devuan.org/merged)
and it would find packages, but then comment them out;
and ultimately it would not install any software packages at all.
Is this because i am trying to install from a USB Media?
the installer has been made via mkusb.
Hello,
upgraded Laptop from Ascii to Beowulf,
and sofar things seem to work just fine,
however, i noticed that when returning from suspend, when resuming,
no password / screensaver password is being asked, altough the setting is set in xfce if i am not mistaken.
xfce energy settings > system > block display , when system goes in suspend (yes)
in screensaver settings > left everything untouched.
