Would human extinction be a bad thing considering the mess we've made of things?
@yeti . . . The discussions I've read/listened to so far worry about how to control machines. Problem is that they are created with all the flaws of their human creators. We want to enslave the machine to do only good things for us like obedient slaves. How can we expect the machine to do that when we cannot do that ourselves? The machine will only mirror and magnify all our human flaws. Until we rid ourselves of our own greed, hatred and delusion everything we touch will be tainted with the same. The hubris and folly of imaging otherwise is stunning . . .
Thanks, yeti. We are so screwed. Humans just don't know any other way. The only "escape" from the madness is to view the entire contaminated mess with detachment and let it go . . . and I'm not just talking about AI . . .

People find this video the same way people keep watching a TV show way past it's prime.
This explains a lot. I am only vaguely aware of "media channels" like that unless something came up in a search and have never subscribed to one. Don't those folks have something better to do with their life? What a waste of time . . .
It does fit the thread topic "AI on mainstream media".
So I see no wrong-doing in mentioning that one.
I did not question your posting it or its appropriateness. I questioned the content. ![]()
I listened to a minute or two of her incoherent ramblings and X'd it. How do you even come across this sort of nonsense? That is a rhetorical question BTW . . .
Time and time again, has already proven that as time passes, modern designs seem uglier and not better.
IMO that reflects the chaotic minds of the creators. Humanity is generally devolving. Not to worry . . . AI will eventually be in charge and very little thinking from humans required . . .
I have an xkill shortcut in my panel for occasions like you describe.
Some are, some aren't.
This sounds vague... well... because it is...
Nice to know you are paying attention.
It is a bit of a chicken egg conundrum. We are constantly experiencing sensory input. Some may be beneficial, some harmful, some just pass through. Sorting which is which is not an easy task and ironically, it is not what comes to us but how we respond that matters and liking or disliking is the most flawed metric of all so best to choose wisely. Yes . . . the task is daunting . . .
@zapper . . . Thanks for the clarity . . . In the end the transformation that really matters is not the "movie out there" but understanding how the mind obsessively attaches to and misinterprets external events that are, in the end, inconsequential froth and foam.
@zapper . . . You torture yourself with so many questions that are quite irrelevant to me so how can I possibly respond to them. I observe the stream of events at a distance but do not identify with them. In fact "media" has been absent from most of my life. The "world" can't be fixed because sentient creatures are too flawed to make choices for the common good. The bell curve says it all though that is something slightly different from what I am trying to describe. The only "world" that can be changed is our own mind and that internal transformation is my only concern.
Behavior is not someone else's fault. We are all 100% responsible for our actions and own the consequent resultants. External approval or disapproval is irrelevant noise.
Horrifying! And the dysfunctional sheeple will love it!! No doubt that humans are the stupidest most self-destructive species on the planet.
@zapper . . . PLEASE get a handle on the chaos of your mind and your unrestrained sharing of those thoughts here. Thank you.
Oh zapper . . . please pay better attention. The exact content of the post that you quoted was:

Did you not notice the "..." and the text beneath those excellent words of advice? HoaS had posted an unnecessarily crude, knee-jerk rant/response to charliebrownau. It was deleted/edited by one of our mods. In response, HoaS has apparently moved on from this forum because he has not been seen here since. Or maybe you like talking to the "dead"? It's a little creepy. Maybe try a seance . . .
@zapper . . . yes
A few years back, this fungus popped up in the woods by the creek. Its life-cycle lasted over several months. It was identified as a Ganoderma Curtisii a type of Reishi which is a very special 'shroom. The camera used is a Canon Powershot that probably cost less than $100. I just point and click. ![]()

@zapper . . . I think you missed the point. Fisher-Price on steroids and fisher price steroids paint two entirely different mental images . . .
You got me completely wrong! I'll try again.
The main point is: Would you pay for having more search options?
No, I would not. We are focusing on 2 different types of "paying" - currency and freedom.. You are focused on monetary cost. My comments are based on the cost to personal freedom by being so closely tied to google.
Beeing naked in front of google and hoping they will deliver better results then is not an option for me.
Me either which is exactly where my comments were coming from. So we actually understand each other quite well. ![]()
What if you use (buy) an API key for google custom search?
I don't see that anything good could come from letting google profile me in such a personal way.
Could be a way to have more search options.
But at what price . . .?
Or is it the same search, just the results are submitted differently?
Those algorithms are a black box . . . How do you begin to find an answer to that question?
@delgado . . . I gathered that from the research I did before posting here. I was hoping someone at Devuan surely knows a way around this obstacle. Sigh . . .
The machine just wants to piss us off and waste our time. We are like cattle being herded into the abattoir and the chutes are narrowing. We will obey the machine! And it is suffocating . . .
I am frustrated . . . -wordtoexclude used to work but hasn't for a long time. It is still possible to exclude a site with -site:sitedomain but no way to exclude more than one site at a time. It is a bit like trying to find a pin stuck in a Jackson Pollack painting.
Please post your tips and/or vent your frustration here . . .
@ribcage . . . Thank you for sharing your solutions and reminding me that I should install gnome-system-tools. Haven't had a need but good to have it there if/when the need arises . . . ![]()
Adding this on Amanpour & Co. yesterday to the discussion:
Fmr. Google CEO Eric Schmidt on the AI Revolution
"Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. How it is being applied—and, perhaps more importantly, regulated—are now the crucial questions to ask. Walter Isaacson speaks with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt about A.I.’s impact on life, politics, and warfare, as well as what can be done to keep it under control."
