Devuan already uses the startpar package to parallelise sysvinit and I think it may also work with OpenRC.

Take note of the warning given by the OpenRC developers:
Better to go with default values in /etc/rc.conf. Never heard about startpar. But, when I measured the boot time, both are equal (almost). No significant difference in boot time.

I have following options enabled in /etc/rc.conf on a Beowulf 3.0 with OpenRC-0.42-1. Boot time is around 39 seconds from rEFIt menu to gdm3 login screen. Honestly, I don't really feel any reduction in time taken. But, just curious if these options being enabled is safe and OK?

Gnome-3.30 + wayland in Devuan 3.0 . It took some time to find a solution to udevd worker issue which keeps delaying boot process. Don't install "modemmanager" and you're fine.
I'm happy that it's working stable. Even dark mode and fractional scaling is supported. Remote desktop managers are unsupported in wayland. Any idea, if any RDM that works?

I would like to test FreeBSD 12 on baremetal; it's a long long time since I had used it. Doubtful about installing FreeBSD on a hard drive already containing Linux & Windows OS's. Great. I've a UEFI setup. How did you install FreeBSD? Whether extracted the base OS to a partition already created and formatted OR used the FreeBSD installer? With FreeBSD installer, choosing manual partitioning I remember it creates more slices (partitions) apart from the root partition, thus probably destroying pre-existing Linux/Windows partitions. The other option isto choose shell mode, where you can manually create partitions. I'm not sure about shell mode and whether bsdinstall (installer) will complete the installation. It will be great, if you can guide.

Glad that it worked. It may be possible to use the proper 8020 *.ppd driver which may be part of hplip. I'm not sure how to do that.

Yes. I think so. In the case of HP 2135 printer, 2130 series driver worked. Hopefully true. I will still recommend you to try running "sudo hp-setup".
Also, check that user has lpadmin as secondary group.

Another option is using CUPS. There is a gui tool system-config-printer. Try installing system-config-printer, system-config-printer-udev packages.
Meanwhile ensure that the printer USB cable is inserted properly in printer end and PC usb slot.

I was going through openRC wiki and saw this package - https://github.com/openrc/opentmpfiles which is also packed for Debian in testing & sid repositories. Anybody using it.

HPLIP db shows HP 8020 Officejet series printers are supported. May be you should run hp-setup with the printer connected to the Linux PC. It will work.

@fsmithred: modemmanager is 100% responsible for the udevd problem. I'm not sure which rule actually is creating problem.
gnome-control-centre > users > change logo also works now, after removing and re-adding the local user. Now, Gnome desktop is working fine.

To reduce entropy related warnings, I installed rng-tools as well, with "HRNGDEVICE=/dev/urandom" added to /etc/default/rng-tools. Haveged also installed.
Still, 3 warnings due to ratelimiting. I booted another distro to check, which also has 5.x kernel. It shows 7 warnings! wonder if this is something concerning.

Gnome has some rough edges period and does not play well with others. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to use it especially on a distribution whose philosophy leans in the opposite direction of Gnome's. Classic square peg|round hole thinking.

Yes, true indeed. I found it the hard way. But, now I have a Gnome desktop running up and fine except for the slight niggles. It isn't crashing. Gnome-3 is appealing to me, though. I'm using it since long. FYI, I tried KDE 5 Plasma with ascii until upgrading to beowulf. Cinnamon may be a 2nd choice. No fun with minimal window managers & customizing it with conky & stuff.
EDIT: If Plasma desktop can be customized to behave like Gnome-shell, I and many others may be ready to move in.

@fsmithred: The udevd worker delaying 3 minutes at boot - This problem again emerged after I did some . When I removed modemmanager package, the delay at boot did not appeared again. This package adds some rules in the /lib/udev/rules.d/ folder. Don't know why it interferes while booting. (I ran ls -halt to see the recent changes in /lib/udev/rules.d). I believe modemmanager may be the trouble causer.
Presently, I have weird issue of nautilus not showing thumbnail previews and gnome-control-centre->Details>Users not able to select a custom image as my user logo. Silly thing, I know. But, it was working before. It seems Gnome3 on Devuan has some rough edges, hard to troubleshoot.

@fsmithred: I have installed Gnome3 again. And it is now working without udevd getting stuck. Don't know how randomly this bug appears & disappear.
BTW, after the installation of Gnome packages was over, I got a message - possibly about my usb bt & wireless adapters.

Maybe, but that's not the case here. It boots fine with gnome and 5.6 bpo kernel. Here's the package list from that system.

Probability of /lib/udev/rules.d/ folder getting any changes or addition if I install Gnome? Should I try installing Gnome now? I will look into the list of packages suggested.

Thank you @Head_on_a_Stick & @Marjorie. I was about to manually symlink the script from /etc/init.d/ to /etc/rc2.d/ . BTW, does their more packages in Devuan that needs conversion from systemd unit files to init scripts?

@fsmithred: I did some dangerous measures to lean the system, instead of re-install. Purged off most of the packages including critical ones. Now, my install has only about 530 packages. Now it boots with linux-image-5.6.x and I get upto the virtual terminal. No delay. Onward, if I install Gnome3, I assume the udevd worker problem may arise. Any input to find out which package will cause the trouble.
OT: Kernel, apt all were purged, essentially making it a broken system. Then, I boot into the another linux installation and extracted filesystem.squashfs from the refracta iso provided. Downloaded apt & related dependencies in chroot environment, copied to /var/cache/apt/archives of Devuan. Afterwards, installed it with dpkg in chroot Devuan installation.

I've seen that warning on systems that boot. I don't think it's a problem.
I added bluez and then blueman, rebooting after each. Still can't reproduce the problem. You may need to install things one at a time and see which package breaks it.
But, that's all I added (even in apt history.log). When I installed with beowulf-desktop-live and beowulf-netinstall ISO's, I installed linux-image-5.6.x and just rebooting to the OS results in the udevd worker getting time out.

But, is there a way to strip off the Beowulf installation to minimal basic install, so that I can test if the udevd problem persists? Currently I've removed Gnome, libx11-*, xcb0 and other X related packages. If there is a way, I can just install the default package lists only, then we can find if the problem disappears.
**Unrelated** : thermald, has only systemd script /lib/systemd/system/thermald.service . No /etc/rc* or /etc/init.d/ script for startup.
