This arrived today from a good friend who lives in a wildlife sanctuary. The world would be a better place with more compassion like this. Brought tears to my eyes . . .

Yesterday I rescued a daddy long legs (DDL) from the argiope aurantia spider's web outside the kitchen window. I carefully picked off the pieces of sticky web stuck on its incredibly fragile legs.

When it was free, instead of hurrying away like every other DLL I've ever encountered this one stretched out along my finger and held on, caressing my finger.

After a few minutes I gently pried it over to a coil of rope on the side of the house.

I've never experienced such gratitude from a small 'bug' actually a form of arachnid, before. Other DDLs I rescue  just stagger away. This one may have seen my eyes through the optivisor I was wearing while I de-webbed it.

Sentience.

@soren . . . looking forward to seeing what you can do with the rather rough mock up. I have another one here that is a little brighter but then I can discern one increment difference in a hex. smile I can add it to git or email to you. Also note that the image needs to be viewed and worked on full screen. Any other colors touching it will distort things because it is very subtle. And a request . . . please never use #FFFFFF or #000000.  Always add just a bit of the primary color so the elements blend instead of becoming visual "dead zones". Feel free to contact me on irc or through the forum mailer. Thanks again for stepping up to give it a try!

Also, the bug page doesn't offer a simple way to browse all currently-open bugs.

Of course it does. Did you not see this list which is on the index page of bugs.devuan.org? Note that I am not going to relink all those options in this post:

The following bug report indices are available:

Packages with active and archived bug reports.
Source packages with active and archived bug reports.
Maintainers of packages with active and archived bug reports.
Submitters of active and archived bug reports.

There is also detailed information in this resource: https://bugs.devuan.org/Developer.html

And also in git:
https://git.devuan.org/devuan/documenta … aintainers

That is probably the clearest documentation I have ever seem anywhere! Sorry . . . no one-liners . . . wink

One more thing . . . our packages are built here https://jenkins.devuan.dev/job/devuan-package-builder/

#329 Re: News & Announcements » How you can help Devuan » 2024-08-09 15:52:49

@soren . . . please see my response in OT.  All the color palettes for devuan theming are related to the release name in some way. Not random colors (or lack thereof). IRC is a good place for discussion . . .

How do I test a Devuan specific package?

There are two repositories where those packages go for testing - stable proposed-updates and experimental. See https://www.devuan.org/os/packages

quickfur wrote:

Does Devuan have a dedicated bug tracker besides the Debian one?

Of course! And there is a link to it at the very top of this page! https://bugs.devuan.org/ There is also a dedicated channel on IRC and a devuan-dev mailing list.

. . .  is the reason so much is needed to be done due to rebranding from debian to devuan?

The custom theme is to establish Devuan's identity from installation through the default desktop. The layout is the same for every release. Only the colors change to reflect the name of that particular Devuan distribution. I chose "deathmetal" because a sword - ie excalibur - is an instrument of death (and also a contemporary music genre). The colors are that of iron - I looked at a lot of ancient swords - with a touch of the matrix because humans never seem to progress in their behavior.

I mean if its not done would debian artwork and graphics leak into the fork?

Debian customizations and default application artwork would probably take over . . . but I have never given it a try.

What a great story! And good advice too. Sometime you just have to laugh to keep from crying . . .

As to what needs to be done . . . there is a general list at How you can help Devuan on this very forum. Engaged forum members who spend their time outside of OT help solve technical issues by reporting bugs or posting solutions. Some of those go to Debian and some are fixed in Devuan. Once the packages are rebuilt, new installer isos need to be created weekly so that the corrected packages can be tested by users. It is a weekly grind and currently only two devs are carrying the burden and have been for years. Some apprentices are definitely needed . . . think 'bus factor'. Join the devuan-dev mail list or #devuan-dev channel on Libera to stay current. It requires initiative and commitment and most importantly a love and appreciation of Devuan.

PS . . . I have "retired" after theming the first 5 Devuan releases. I did prepare a mockup of the "deathmetal" desktop background but sadly no one has volunteered to take it further even though I spent some hours creating a howto. sad

If only Devuan's survival depended on jokes . . . sigh . . .

Good advice. Users on this forum deserve better than offerings like this..

#337 Re: Off-topic » Why cloud dependency and push updates is a bad thing » 2024-07-29 14:37:47

Sigh . . . in the windows article this:

This could negatively effect users in parts of the world without reliable internet . . .

Good grief . . . idiot writer doesn't know the difference between effect and affect. And they get paid to produce this drivel? We are doomed! LOL!

Dear Altoid,

Even I have build a package or two over the years using this guide by Soul Singin' on the Debian forum:

HowTo Build a Package from Source the Smart Way

Give it a try if you're in the mood some day!

#339 Re: Off-topic » Secure Boot probably not as secure as users would prefer » 2024-07-26 20:33:09

Unfortunately. . . wailing and pulling of hair over and over does little to turn the tide. It only wastes Devuan resources and perhaps provides therapy for those with nothing more constructive to do . . .

#341 Re: Off-topic » Why cloud dependency and push updates is a bad thing » 2024-07-24 19:54:54

@quickfur . . . I bet you could make an excellent contribution to the joke thread with that info!

#342 Re: Off-topic » How to derail a thread part 2 » 2024-07-24 15:06:16

Good grief! If y'all knew anything about Devuan or those responsible for providing it, you wouldn't be posting such drivel. The constant flow of useless babble here and elsewhere is more than annoying. Please get a grip . . .

#343 Re: Off-topic » How to derail a thread part 1 » 2024-07-23 17:46:35

Yes, I remember rrq's objection to your unclickable links and I likely said something at some point also. I also understand your logic.

Since you are a bit of a noob, I'll share some history . . . at one time, iirc,  rrq removed the truncated live link function so links printed in their entirety. Due to user feedback from those who like to click a link, the live, truncated links were returned. Will be interesting to hear other forum members feedback about your manipulations to "have it your way".

But . . . what keeps ringing in my ears is this:

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one."

In the meantime, please use the standard protocols of this forum as they were intended.
