@fanderal

Interesting, didnt 'know that intel ucode did that. Although there is a better option still, use a more libre bios, such as coreboot and have intel me disabled. You need to buy from an OEM though who would disable it for you though.

wink

Otherwise, you are on your own regarding intel me.

Securing a computer requires three things to my knowledge:

Using as few blobs as possible, wifi included preferably meaning ath9k or similar

Coreboot + disabled me or similar

A distro that doesn't have blobs installed and refusing proprietary software that does remote dialing which means basically most of it.

Technically, emulators do use proprietary software, but they don't escape their sandboxes much if at all.

I currently use iceweasel-uxp + ematrix, httpsalways, httpsinquirer, modifyhttpresponse (blocks some useragentsniffers!) a custom ublock origin legacy, getemall, greasemonkey fork and other minor stuff.  icedove-uxp and no other addons which means no google accounts!

Using a firefox equivalent, with arkenfox config and privacy badger, ublock origin and some script blocker is wise too though if you don't use the above.

The rest? Idk...

I still been using Hyperbola. They were struggling with some issue, but I think they are getting back on track now.

Devuan however, I have on my other SSD for disk cloning.

Having two SSDs on a computer can be wise sometimes. smile

@golinux sadly that is true, you are what you think. Why sad? Because many people mis-use this without knowing it or sometimes worse still, wilfully.

Glad some people do this right. Though I definitely struggle with this sometimes. Exercise, helps me beat this sometimes, but that usually requires a specific amount of effort for that. wink

#328 Re: Freedom Hacks » Securing my/our computer systems » 2024-02-22 12:21:43

@pcalvert

He doesn't really make it clear that he is talking about the kernel and also, windows security features of being locked down are largely meaningless due to being proprietary and it having backdoors.

Linux can be hardened if you know how, however. firejail is one way. I don't understand the criticisms about firejail either. Besides, windows executables are marked as executable once downloaded. The same is not true for linux. Which is why windows gets malware easily... so yeah...

"What did the fish say when it ran into a wall?

DAM!"

Speaking of whichm this reminds me of a  courage the cowardly dog episode where the father beaver christened a dam:

That dam beaver.

tongue

Point of fact, that joke is old/common even by my standards. big_smile

#330 Re: Freedom Hacks » Securing my/our computer systems » 2024-02-19 01:02:00

@GlennW fun fact, btw, minus the fun. tongue

But seriously, that github is mocked on reddit and I have trolled them as well in the past. big_smile

I did so making a fake issue on github.

LOL!

I wonder how many other social media websites make fun of them.

They must think people are stupid to why corporations even are funding "open source"

Preferably libre software because its open source minus the possibility of proprietary with a huge focus on freedom.

#331 Re: Freedom Hacks » Securing my/our computer systems » 2024-02-15 22:23:20

@golinux alas, some people only will talk to people on facebook.  But that being said, its always better to avoid it as much as possible. Facebook is much like google and their search engine, a pile of crap that no one really should want.

@Glenn

ahh yes, madaiden github...

those tips that... from that person who made that lie github page.

Don't take that person's opinions seriously.

This person thinks that proprietary software is more secure then open source or if you prefer more secure than libre software.

Point being,  a bunch of empty air. tongue

An example:

https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/linux.html

Windows is not ahead of linux in any security focused way. Quite the opposite... which this page lies about.

#332 Re: Freedom Hacks » Securing my/our computer systems » 2024-02-12 02:10:45

If you want to use win3.0 or as new as winME or anything in between, dosbox-x is perfect for that.

I have used it before, you install win95 for example into dosbox-x hdd.img.

I followed the dosbox-x guide.

As an obvious statement though, I keep that image from having network connections.

Because it would be downright insane not to... smile

You can also build dosbox-x to not be connected to the internet. And, the image itself, can be installed without the network features.

Done that with win95.

Only really do that to play arcane games that have no new variants or have bad ones.  Westwood monopoly is a good example as is the cheesy yet silly SORRY! game.  both are good, but the latter is more fun than the board game itself due to extra cards being added. big_smile

If you use dosbox-x and want to keep your system secure, though.

A: only mount ISOs you know are not malware because I don't know if its possible for them to escape into linuxland
B: as previously stated keep disconnected from the internet
C: preferably Both and more

On a final note, be careful with putting files in via nbd if you try to.  Been there myself.

Anyways though, getting off topic yet again.

Privoxy is a good use, but tblock is also a good use.

tblock changes your /etc/hosts

and adds stuff that will be blocked, such as ads, trackers, etc...

If you curious whether I use tblock or privoxy, the answer is simple.

I use both. big_smile

#333 Re: ARM Builds » [SOLVED] rockpro64 time broken won't let me install ntp due to 2013 date. » 2024-02-12 01:56:42

tried man date. I actually tried to download openntpd instead of regular ntp and that fixed the problem.

As far as I could see. smile

Appreciate the help though.

I actually looked this up at one point, before I saw you replied here and the solution was git reset revision --hard

That seems to be what I wanted most of all.

Does anyone know what commands would work using git in reversing all commits to a specific one?

Like say there are 100 after commit ab30493

what command(s) would I use to remove every changed commit after ab30493.

That's just an example,

Ie, so it would be like it was before the 100 commits.

Can anyone answer me?

Feel free, I will wait nearby hopefully.

Or tomorrow maybe, etc...

I will add myself to the list of "I started with DOS"

Although for me, I was a 5 year old kid playing games on it tongue

I love how unreal the graphics looked then.

Compare that to now where everything looks like it is straight from reality...

That's not why I ever played them games. It was to escape reality. But that's neither here nor there.

I currently use devuan on one of my devices due to my other OS Hyperbola, not supporting ARM64.

(Rockpro64)

Can anyone tell me how to get this pile of crap to stop being a liar and let me disable gpg altogether? trusted=yes tried allow-unauthenticated tried allow-insecure-repos tried

It keeps saying some nonsense about signature verification failed despite me putting commands like the above to tell it to stop checking.

The reason I need it to stop checking is three fold, cannot go on the internet, cannot install ntp, thinks its 2013, etc...

These  signature checks are a bunch of crap and get in the way too easily.

#338 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2024-02-06 20:28:43

Google also doesn't respect its user either. So github and gitlab are both effectively bad. Out of the two, I am shocked to say this, but "microsoft" is actually the less problematic one. Well, at least on a user agent sniffing level for sure.

Bonkers man...

#339 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2024-02-06 20:26:43

codeberg doesn't have much crap in it yes, but also, it looks like it might be one of the more user friendly ones that is libre.

That was why I suggested it.

#340 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2024-02-06 01:05:29

I think changing from openmate might be wise... mate is a trademark isnt it?

Maybe the repo got taken down because of that? idk

#341 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2024-02-06 01:01:17

Owned by microsoft yes, but if you think gitlab is better, no it is not. Its owned by google if I recall correctly.

Codeberg however is good.

#342 Re: ARM Builds » Raspberry Pi 5 » 2024-02-03 04:40:08

@Vortex any benchmarks with speed of Reading and writing files and/or copying as well?

Like what speed, etc?

I am sure its faster to use ARM with micro sd than x86 due to the technology being newer.

#343 Re: News & Announcements » xorg-server 21.1.9 - Security fix release » 2024-01-26 18:01:10

It is like systemd in that its being pushed hard and its buggy supposedly too.

As for the more problematic parts of systemd, you are correct that wayland isn't like systemd in those ways.

Still, its mega buggy and for this reason, I will avoid it as long as possible.

If you don't think its being pushed hard, try to remove wayland and its libraries completely from devuan and see how that goes. Hint, it will remove way too much!

#344 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] What is your view on major distros dropping X11 and requiring Wayland? » 2024-01-26 17:54:41

GMOs should be avoided in products that directly effect the body, such as lotions, food, shampoo, water, deodorant.

As  for technology, can't avoid it lol.

#345 Re: News & Announcements » xorg-server 21.1.9 - Security fix release » 2024-01-26 00:15:20

Wayland is much like systemd, in the sense that its being forced down people's throats when the better thing to do would be to send it packing. Bullies tend to force stuff down peoples' throats.

Systemd
dbus
wayland
pulseaudio
pipewire
avahi
networkmanager
java
etc...

When something depends on a library connected to the above yet would work otherwise if the devs weren't so stupid and made it a forced dependency despite not needing it, that is a sign that you are dealing with a bully trying to manipulate and control you into using what they want you to use when they should just get lost instead.

wink

#346 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] What is your view on major distros dropping X11 and requiring Wayland? » 2024-01-26 00:01:16

Pardon me for asking, but are you the same athenian, who develops epyrus?

I became curious when I saw your username for that reason.

Btw, I don't see a benefit to wayland either.  These problems that they are trying to fix, could have been solved if they hadn't kept adding bloated linux frameworks and instead designed efficient lean, applications made with intelligence in mind IN the FIRST PLACE!

Emphasis I felt was needed, bloat makes problems inevitably a hundred times worse. Screw you redhat! Screw you corporations!

Seriously though, this is like web 2.0 and web 3.0, nobody needs javascript or java built into the web. Nor does anyone need novices building the web.

If you want something like the web, linux frameworks such as wayland done right, have an expert do it.

There is zero reason we should have all these security crucial stuff built by greedy simpletons who code as well as I can. The difference being, I admit I cannot develop code well and they have a tiny amount of skill but don't admit how terrible they are.

Btw, in case anyone responds, that a reason is for profit, that they feel like its a good reason. No...

greed justifies nothing. Money is an illusionary reason why something needs to be done. Its a false reason with no purpose.

This being said, I don't like the future of linux right now.  I almost wonder if stuff like my usb mouse, doesn't work because it requires some framework that I detest to make it work.

Dropping X11 for wayland is just another drop in the bucket called idiocracy

#347 Re: ARM Builds » Raspberry Pi 5 » 2024-01-25 00:48:04

How fast does a raspberry pi 5 run off of a micro sd card btw? I know how sluggish the first one is, but I don't know how fast the other four/five are, depends if you including the zero. smile

#348 Re: Freedom Hacks » Anyone know how to make a usb mouse work? » 2024-01-24 01:36:34

I should probably mention, I gave up. But if your curious as to if I ran root, no.

Also, no idea of wayland was causing the problem or not... but its weird, Hyperbola 0.4.4, a lot less packages and by default the usb mouse worked, but in Devuan 12 which has many newer packages, not so much.

Its bonkers...

Maybe I needed xfce or mate though?

Idk... so weird.

But since I stopped gaming again, it matters not.

#349 Re: Off-topic » waylandows is crap » 2024-01-24 01:34:22

openrc less than 20K vs systemd 790K

Facepalm.jpeg

Aye...

almost 40x bigger...

simply amazing...

in all the wrong ways though...

#350 Re: Off-topic » waylandows is crap » 2024-01-16 03:33:55

@quickfur tokens?

1 million lines of code is very damn excessive. Actually, I was wrong, openrc has less than 20K lines of code currently. 1/5 of the limit I had said.

less than 100k?

Nah, its less than 20K

Hmm... thats weird, it looks like systemd must have been getting stuff torn out, because i see it has 790K

https://openhub.net/p?page=6&query=init

But yeah, 790K is still massively unreasonable.
