#301 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] Microphone not found by ALSA » 2017-08-26 12:10:58

Wild guess.  If the hw only allows for a single input analog device and there is an onboard mic wouldn't the onboard mic have to be disabled?

#302 Re: DIY » dual-kernel Devuan » 2017-08-26 12:05:09

Maybe this question is appropriate here as well, I asked elsewhere and did not get any responses.
You install jessie and you build your system.  eth0 and wlan0 are on.  You upgrade to ascii and clean it up and make an iso via refracta.  You boot the live system, all is well, but the network has switched to long names ?
Did you check whether that was the problem?
$ sudo ifconfig -a  (look for the eth and wl names and add it to the next command).
$ sudo ifconfig wl4520jh02^(*&^  up

Why does this change from the system to the live, and I bet it stays like this when reinstalled.
All information of how to revert this I have found is for systemd and does not apply to us.

#303 Re: Installation » Manual partitioning: boot partition, dual boot » 2017-08-26 02:49:40

Not that windows7 is any good, but it was the last of non-destructive windows that could peacefully cohabitate with linux.
The rest might as well be considered a dummy terminal connected to Gates' mainframe.
I fail to understand the logic of paying for hardware and then handing it out to ms to control.

If this is a trend in things (past 6-7 years) we should maybe skip the agony, give our money to NSA and ask for a terminal login connection to their systems to get all our computing and communicating needs met.  I am serious, we are all spinning down the same hole, we might as well take a dive to the center and get it done with.  Globally, not just the US.
We don't need no stinking privacy, we definetely should not have a say on who gets elected as it doesn't get any worse worldwide, skip all the hypocricy and diplomacy trickery, and exterminate all the people you are going to exterminate anyway to get their oil and water, ....  and hope there is an afterlife after all.

What were we talking about?
Ohh wwwinnndoze.

#304 Re: DIY » dual-kernel Devuan » 2017-08-26 02:35:32

I hear that 4.4 may work, I haven't tried.  You may have to compile it on your own and that may not be a good thing for includiing it in a live image as it may not work on other machines.
But why not just pull the necessary dependencies for the kernel from ascii and see how it works.

vuudo-miyos and all followers, I think I solved 2 little bugs.
If you use a "minimize-all" in your tint or lxpanel have you noticed that conky vanishes together with all windows?
If in the .conf file you turn off the option at "own_window =false," then conky stays up there at all times.

2nd bug!!!

Remember how the generator menus don't work when on top of the conky surface?
They work now, as conky is not a window anymore!!

smile

Which means more uploads, or take the stick to a nearby U library or something with a fast connection and click to sourceforge smile

Since synaptic runs as root, you would have to log in as root and change theme and color schemes to affect synaptic.
Or you can copy your desktop configuration from /home/user to /root/ and adjust file ownership.  If you make a dark theme for your desktop and use something like leafpad it will be dark.  If you do sudo leafpad it will be light.

maybe during the upgrade to ascii polkit1 was snatched
At some point somethings were not working again (especially clicking on volumes that do appear on the side of pcmanfm)
everything was working fine and great just by using apt upgrade, then I got wild and used apt-get dist-upgrade and things fell apart, like the obmenu-generator schemas.  I used the miyo trick and brought them back to life but my editing on them vanished.

I guess dist-upgrade is best kept for a more stable release than ascii.  It took me a while but I brought things back in order.
Also, lxdm might be working here (and for lxde) but brings alot of dysfunction to openbox.  Lightdm is IT for openbox I think.

3rd thing, I checked for refracta-usb on experimental and didn't find it, was it supposed to be there?

4th  I could swear that on my live-vuudo and on the installation the net-devices were eth0 and wlan0.  When I made my own (mamy-O) and tried to configure wicd it wasn't finding anything.  When I ifconfig -a it revealed the long names of the two.
How did this happen?  Should I speculate and think that in the installation the network settings were carried from jessie and stayed the same, but when the image was made the networking defaults were in effect as they are in ascii?

I bet @fsmithred has the answer for that one.

I made a live with an alternate locale setting for a friend who wants to give linux a try.  Sometimes people stick with the first thing they try as it becomes more familiar than anything else.  So a total mewb will get wet feet in vuu-do-miyo-testing  smile

Everything works great though and your release notes are not to be missed.
In terms of functionality I had to replace your hotkey Alt-f as my fingers have automatically learned to go for Alt-f save when I am editing something.  All of a sudden I see a file manager where my document was and I get a cold sweat for 5-10".

Palemoon is becoming addictive, I am getting over this aged qupzilla I have been using.
I think you two (miyo greenjeans) should come up with your own desktop.  Maybe call it mojo-box

There is aqemu on the devuan repositories, I've not tried it yet, and how about a trial copy of vmware workstation if you haven't burned this card already.

The reason I mentioned arch is that package managers like yaourt you click on an Aur package that is always source, no binary, and it installs together with any dependencies missing.  http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6/raspberry-pi
I am sure if arch is running on arm6 artix, arch-nosystemd, and manjaro-openrc all will run.  Artix is the evolution of the other two that are now abandoned.

Just installed the previous one (ob 64b  vuudo-ob-64+-20170727_1723.iso), it was upgraded to ascii, eudev'ed, and it is running great.
The wird thing is that the issue I was having on the 2 previous installations with mouse and keyboard freezing on login screen is not appearing here.  So now I have to study the differences and it is not related to this xorg bug.
One thing I wanted to ask the creator was about the i386 arch being included.  How do we turn it off and what was the logic of including it?  I am wondering since the problem I had on login was on a miyo install, if by any chance something relating to X came from 32b and is causing the problem.

The other is lxpolkit, why shouldn't be there and autostart?  Even though you install a default sudo for the user pretty much nothing on the menu that would require sudo will not start.  You install and run lxtask and everything works (mounting volumes from pcmanfm, synaptic, etc).  There may be a reason that escapes me, that is why I am asking.

Anyway, overall I like it much more than standard devuan as it already has the majority of what I am used to already done.
Lean and mean.

Are you running this off of a dvd, configuring it live and try to create an image that you will later install or are you trying to install?
If you are running from the dvd and you have kept the default saving directories as /home/....  then it is trying to temp write and finally write all on that medium, right?  I am interpreting some of the warnings and errors as inability to write on the medium.

Big truck or lil'truck?  All I remember from sound and truck was playing such songs on the radio in a truck stop when I would hear racist shit, (not that dead-kennedies was more inappropriate for the instance) and the other sound was the "brakes" coming "down" to denver and my teeth rattling.  Al I wanted then was a good woman to ride with me, now all I want is to be coming down the mountain with the wonderful sound of jakes..  And they say times are a-changing!

If on dvd /home is on dvd, even if write able, why would you want to destroy it writing work and snapshot on it?
At least mount /home on your hardisk somewhere or change the directories refracta uses for its work

#317 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Where are the refracta scripts? » 2017-08-23 11:41:01

You are right, I forgot I had them to begin with and during a careless upgrade from jessie to ascii refracta was dropped, so this is how I got them back.  In miyo one of the four was missing.
Yad exists in ascii right?  Wouldn't it work in jessie if he updated to ascii install only yad and return to jessie and reupdate.
Just stay away from autoremove as it will all be gone again, right?

#318 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Ethernet and WiFi cards not recognized » 2017-08-23 11:35:26

you may just need the appropriate firmware

eth  https://askubuntu.com/questions/670347/ … 00-drivers
ubuntu is based on debian, so except for systemd dependencies most of the instructions work on devuan as well.

wifi https://askubuntu.com/questions/672700/ … 65-drivers

Since you need an initial connection to download stuff either find the appropriate firmware****.deb download it with something else, save it somewhere where you can find it from devuan (usb stick??)
run $ sudo dpkg -i firmw*****.deb
or use sudo chroot /the_mount_point_of_your_devuan and use $ apt install firmw****

The first iso fsmithred mentioned, ending with 2222, had a /firmware directory with a ton of stuff.  When in doubt do $ dpkg -i * and install them all, you can always remove the ones you don't need later..

#319 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] Update concerning the 2017 Release of Miyo-XTRA » 2017-08-22 19:46:29

Have you played around with one of the available menu editors?  I know it is not an answer to your problem, as you want it done regularly and automatically for miyo users, but messing with them gives you clues of what may be wrong.  On the list of available packages that can be added to the menu I believe they come up as soon as they are installed.  Maybe if the package doesn't have a preconfiguration for a menu entry/anchor it is not added, but gets listed so you can add it manually.
But don't listen to me, I may not know what I'm talking about, just guessing things.

#320 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Where are the refracta scripts? » 2017-08-22 19:40:47

I don't like having 2-3 steps of repositories open in any single instance as it is an accident waiting to happen.
When I used experimental I used it alone by commenting out all others.  I had no problem installing any of the above.  Then I commented it out and brought back the regular distribution repositories.  Unless there was a temporary problem with the repository.

#321 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] Update concerning the 2017 Release of Miyo-XTRA » 2017-08-22 11:38:52

It smells like polkit (lxpolkit) related trouble,
Installing and removing packages is a root only privileged process.  If the menu is user specific only user can alter.  Other linux editions have LX-stuff a bit more relaxed than debian defaults.  I think it has to do with single user or enterprise oriented system.
It also relates to the choice of whether you want app-menu to be system wide uniform or user modifiable.  IOW if we are both sudo-ed users on the system and I install backgammon does it pop-up in your games menu?  I believe that on default debian lxde stuff is that it will not unless you choose to add it to your menu.

#322 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Ethernet and WiFi cards not recognized » 2017-08-21 22:13:26

did you try the failsafe boot option?  That's the only one that worked for me, the rest I got a black screen.

#323 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Ethernet and WiFi cards not recognized » 2017-08-21 13:09:41

if you switch # your jessie - ascii you can add ceres just for the linux image.  There is 4.12 available which is already a stable kernel, 4.13 is being worked on by the linux people.
It run fine on my older machine but may include hw-support you need.

The first I realized as being strange is that dpkg was not working with obmenu-generator
Then gdebi could not install, then something else and it went all down hill from there.
