Did you mean ambiguous?
Yes I did. Been in bed most of the last 24 not feeling well and a little foggy. I'll go fix it.
Good lawwwddd....
I had a similar go around with another user here regarding ambiguous communication a while ago.
So it would seem that Devuan will effectively still be a "derivative" rather than a fork for the next release. It doesn't surprise me, as I've always thought that completely forking an entire distribution, especially one the size of Debian, was going to be a momentous task.
Devuan has forked major parts of Debian relating to systemd. Most of Debian repos remain unaffected and do not need to be forked at this time. In the future we may decide to host all those unaffected packages in a Devuan repo but for now merging with Debian is a more efficient way to do it.
Which is why I said equivalent to "testing" rather than any release code name.
"equivalent to the Debian testing branch" doesn't say that to me.
Maybe "which is equivalent to Debian Stretch but still undergoing testing to systemd-free compatible environment"
Is ASCII based directly on the stretch repositories then...? I thought that after jessie, Devuan would go it a lone and develop a true fork?
Yes ascii is based more than 90% on Debian repos and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
You're also running "ASCII" which is the equivalent to the Debian testing branch. This is not a finished, stable release.
Not exactly. We are lagging behind the Debian cycle a bit. Ascii is equivalent to Debian Stretch which is now a stable release. Current Debian testing is Buster which will be our Beowulf once ascii stable is released. ![]()
If it's not "free", it's because of what you've added to it.
A default Devuan install is indeed free software.
I suggested trying the wheezy version - Twoflower. Might be worth a try since it seems you're kind of at the end of the road . . .
Ha! Wasn't expecting this!
$ aptitude why libpulse0
i qemu-system-x86 Depends libpulse0 (>= 0.99.1)$ aptitude why libsystemd0
i libpulse0 Depends libsystemd0I think that vlc might need that. pulseaudio is not installed. But that's on jessie and Lydia_K cleared out most systemd deps. Rinse and repeat needed for ascii
Yes, libsystemd0 is passively there not doing anything (so far) but systemd is not. There are other remnants of systemd libs etc, scattered here and there like dead barnacles on a boat. Not ideal but not enough (wo)man power to clean out the cruft which requires it. This has been discussed MANY times over the years. Search on irc and dng etc.
Yes. An oldie but goodie from before Devuan existed.
Actually, I was thinking of this image.
cynwulf is new to this forum but he is not new to Linux. This overview of the changing Linux landscape is both cautionary and inspiring. As I read these essays, I laughed and I was saddened but more importantly, I was motivated! I don't want Devuan to fall victim to the mentality that got us into this mess in the first place. It's up to us individually and collectively to be the best that we can be to save the sinking ship. Enjoy!

Sorry, for being rhetorical. I'm just not a hardware person. Luckily, onboard video works ootb here.
Hey, thanks for linking to d1g! There are already several DUFers over here and more always welcome.
Is anything ever a given in Linux?
And we can't help without a clue about your hardware. ![]()
I never could get the VLC that comes with jessie to work properly so I installed the wheezy version - Twoflower - and it works just fine. If you're on ascii who knows.
Have you tried netsurf? I haven't but it has been discussed on the dng mail list so search for it in the archives and repos.

Dean did make an appearance at DUF about 1 to 2 years back (?)... it was a new account (as ever), can't remember the name (perhaps "notquitethatsamemeanguyyetagain") then with a characteristic flourish, vanished into the smog, ever the typical enigmatic, leaving us all guessing...
He was actually there in April this year.
Note the interesting link posted in that thread that relates to the redis discussion on dng.
Fantastic!
They could also go into an .icons directory in you user directory.
JohnDeere630 is the owner/admin at DUF.org - I think you know as well as I do, that he's someone to depend on (having saved the mummified remains of the site from it's demise twice over).
I can't speak for him, but as one of the admins there I can pose the question if needed.
Maybe we/you could start a thread there? That way we could all pipe in with suggestions. If that doesn't suit, yes, could you please pm JohnDeere630. Whatever you think is best. But let's wait to see what fsr has to say about the idea first.
fsmithred wrote:Now I need to do something else to get my mind off this.
I'm sorry to hear it's come to this, it's a pity you didn't have a section at DUF.org, I'd have welcomed you there, as would the current admin (and previous admins).
Hindsight is 20/20.
Sadly these "free" forum sites tend to hold the users to ransom. Much the same in the old days with ezboard - it was impossible to migrate elsewhere, they got you on the hook and wanted you to pay...
It's not the monetary cost that is the problem in this case because I'm sure that could be covered. It's the 'terms' and UI that are unacceptable. It would have been nice if freeforums had given admins a heads up to get out of there before the takeover. Perhaps DUF could still find a place for fsr to rebuild some essential posts and start anew . . .

I double checked and my UN and PW are the same ones I've had forever. Maybe you can see things because you're the admin?
