I had the exact same issue with MATE, but using the -consolekit versions of both libpolkit-backend and libpolkit-gobject as per the instructions solved it for me. An upgrade had somehow left me with -consolekit on one, and -systemd on the other.
In xfce installed from desktop-live, shutdown buttons work and usb mounting works in all combinations of consolekit/elogind and slim/lightdm, but no combination gives me the ability to start gparted or synaptic from the menu or from terminal as gparted-pkexec or synaptic-pkexec.
I've seen the same problem in stretch. And I've also noticed that the problem doesn't exist if your user is in the sudo group. (I think that last feature is built into pam.)

These instructions helped restore my Devuan/ASCII/mate after upgrade. I use lightdm instead of slim.

I have been running Ascii MATE for several months now. There was a whole ball of polkit stuff upgraded, and now gparted and synaptic will not start from their menu items. Any ideas?

I was also confused by that. Debian has a social contract. Devuan has the (almost) no Code of Conduct. Is the poster referring to the Debian or the Devuan document. And what in whichever document does not fit their "personal needs"?
I'm still trying to figure out why they even posted in this thread. it seemed to come out of nowhere, hinting at some ill-defined grievances. Very cryptic and weird to me - I'm just a simple follower of Devuan. For that matter, the OP was a bit confusing to me, but then, I am easily confused. Whatever - I wish everyone peace!

Everyone is entitled to their meltdowns and confusion as long as they take responsibility instead of imagining that it's someone else's fault.

I have read your postings in this thread, and I still don't have any idea what your problem with Devuan actually is, or why you're posting in this thread. Can you enlighten me? It's quite possible that I missed something.

I think you are overly touchy here. As is fungus. Ol' fungus is prone to bluster a bit, and sometimes I think he gets a bit over the top. So if he is suspended for a while to think about things, I don't really see it as some evil conspiracy. I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think he might have been suspended once in the past.
I think golinux has explained her part quite clearly, It seems like some people just like drama, and whipping up issues where there are none.
Just my opinion, observing this with no agenda.

It seems that a dist-upgrade on ascii done yesterday pulls in 4.9.0-5-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 (2018-01-04) x86_64 GNU/Linux
as I'm on Intel as reported by dmesg

A baseball joke that my non-American friends might not quite 'get':
The Boston Symphony recently performed Beethoven's Ninth symphony which is a wonderful piece that has a part near the end in which the bass violins do nothing. So, the bassists snuck offstage, out the backdoor, and next door to the local pub for a drink.
After quickly gulping down a few stiff drinks, one of them checked his watch and said, "Oh no, we only have 30 seconds to get back!"
Another bassist said, "Don't worry, I tied the last page of the conductor's score down with string to give us a bit more time. We'll be fine."
So, they staggered and stumbled back into the concert hall and took their places just as the conductor was busily working on the knot in the string so he could finish the symphony.
Someone in the audience asked his companion, "What's going on? Is there a problem?"
His companion said, "This is a critical point - it's the bottom of the Ninth, the score's tied, and the bassists are loaded!"

My jessie does not save older kernels - at least they're not listed at boot. I would like to know what grub file needs to be tweaked to tell grub to save 2 kernels. Used to be easy to do that with the old grub. This is not progress . . .
I think I spoke too soon. I'm running ascii, upgraded from jessie. The upgrade left jessie's 3.16 kernel when it upgraded to 4.9, and I can boot either one from grub. Routine kernel updates don't work that way, I guess.
I agree - old grub was so much more understandable...

I believe it saves one older kernel - at least that's what it does for me. When a new kernel is installed, it will then save the current kernel and delete the previous saved kernel. So you always have one fallback.

My ascii system updated to eudev and libeudev1 without incident in yesterday's updates - version is 3.2.2-9. Experimental not enabled. Everything seems good.

I should have some time this week to check it out. I put 'vuudo' in my search engine, and got all sorts of Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans hits. Pretty wild - I grew up with that stuff back in the late 50's/early 60's. Why, it seems like just yesterday! Not.

Awesome, I hope you like it! Will actually be uploading version 1.0.6 (in Openbox only) hopefully tomorrow as i'm almost done with it. Not any huge changes from 1.0.5 but will have new Palemoon (27.6.1) and newest Obmenu-generator script (.84) new linux desktop files perl module (.25) and more.

Yep, with Mate and gnome2 before that, Mate will also occasionally do this with the optical drive if you have one, Mate also throws up an error message when you insert a blank CD if the optical drive is not already mounted, I fixed that at one point but can't remember what I did.
Openbox using gvfs though hasn't been doing it though, it's been remarkably trouble-free about mounting/unmounting properly.
