#1 Re: Packaging for Devuan » Repository deb.devuan.org not accepted by Discover » 2024-08-05 01:48:14

Thanks for the replies.  It occurred to me later that Discover is a KDE app.  I removed it on my other OS and I will remove it on Devuan as soon as I find out how to do that.

From the following message it seems that /etc/apt/sources.list refers to a cd drive even though the OS is on my 64 bit computer.

E: The repository 'cdrom://[Devuan GNU/Linux 5.0.1 daedalus amd64 - desktop 20230914] daedalus Release' does not have a Release file.
W: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
W: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: cdrom://[Devuan GNU/Linux 5.0.1 daedalus amd64 - desktop 20230914] daedalus Release is not (yet) available (Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs)

I have tried to use apt-get install to install two packages which I know are in the Debian repository and in each case the package could not be found.  It seems I need to amend sources.list.  Thank you, GlennW, for the lines I need for that file.  Synaptic is not installed and I will install it as soon as I know how to do that on Devuan.

When I try to launch Discover, I get the message that the repository (deb.devuan.org) installed by a Daedalus installer isn't available.  The message is quite complicated and I can't work out what to do.

The best mirror for me to use seems to be https://mirrors.ocf.berkeley.edu/devuan … pool/main/

What shall I do?

Thanks.  I'll download that iso.

$ lscpu |grep "Architecture"
Architecture:                         x86_64

Thanks for replying.  This is the machine:

$ inxi -M
Machine:
  Type: Desktop Mobo: ASUSTeK model: PRIME H310M-A R2.0 v: Rev X.0x
    serial: <superuser required> UEFI: American Megatrends v: 0305
    date: 06/28/2018

The iso is devuan_daedalus_5.0.1_i386_desktop.iso

It seems I have misunderstood the term amd64.  What does it mean?  As I recall, there were several different terms using that prefix.

I installed the kernel provided by the Daedalus installer.  It isn't bootable on a 64bit machine.

Can that be remedied somehow or is the system limited to 32bit machines?

#6 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] How to avoid installing GRUB » 2024-08-03 01:54:18

I was able to install without GRUB.  Expert mode has an option Continue without boot loader.  I am marking this thread as solved.

The installer installed on the partition I selected AND on a partition of the same number on another drive.

The OS isn't bootable because the kernel provided doesn't boot 64bit machines.  I'll file separately about that.

Thanks for the replies.  I did not ask about os-prober.

I think replies #6 and #5 answer my question.  os-prober is set to run on the existing OS and I would run update-grub after the new installation.

I have created a live usb from devuan_daedalus_5.0.1_i386_desktop.iso  I found the following threads about debootstrap.  Neither helped.

Thanks.  I have studied that page.

20) Now that all the software required is installed, the GRUB bootloader will be installed.

It is evident from the warning following that paragraph that the installer will replace the existing GRUB.  I want to avoid that.  I will not use the installer if I can't avoid that.

Hello.  I already have grub installed by another OS.  I can add the Devuan installation (on a partition) to the existing GRUB menu.  How do I stop the daedalus installer installing GRUB?
