runit is working great . i made a sata2 old pc boot devuan xfce under 25s (usually somewhere between 29~33s) . debian systemd on the other hand boot about (34~35) and have the boot crashed . or maybe i should install systemd on devuan ? since removing systemd from debian is a hassle . I run trial 5 times , and one of the systemd boot crashed (the first boot) . runit and sysVinit on the other hand have never failed a boot process .

I had to do a hard shutdown. It was stuck in an endless loop of "start job this" and "start job that".

this is what happened to my debian install too , but it repeated too fast and then slowing down and freezes .

btw that was the first time i ever crashed a boot . even my old windows 7 times never failed a boot .

should i increase the trial times ?

#2 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » ALSA is my favorite » 2019-08-30 10:36:31

Tbh i don't even have money to buy laptops . But my Linux mentor said try to get the Local-brand AMD laptop otherwise just try Lenovo or HP . Since most of the time they worked out-of-the-box with Linux/BSD or at least with minimal configuration .

Other good choice is Intel NUC and Raspberry Pi , or Banana Pi if you can't even buy RbPi .

On the topic , you can have this ALSA working for bigger soundsystems using this (i forgot the name of the application) that works like routing application . You have this GUI to connect which driver to which soundcard . I also remembered it mentioned on iirc freedompenguin's channel (you know the channel with vikingpenguin) . *Let me check my Youtube's history i hope it remains there .

#3 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » What games do you play on Devuan?? » 2019-08-30 10:29:35

I rarely play but maybe a PSX game , using emulation . Works flawlessly .

And mostly i speedrun it . Usually to vent anything unhealthy for my mental health out of my system (boredom , frustration , anger , irritation , and many more dark things) . Otherwise just a warming up for my brain whenever i overslept .

Megaman X5~6 are the best for warming up my brain before i dwell in the work for the rest of the day . Or doing vimtutor speedrun if i get bored . Digimon Digital Card Battle , Monster Rancher Card Battle , Brigandine GE , DMW 1~3 are speedrun with save since i usually played around 10~15 minutes . But sometimes i forgot that they are there (in the external HDD) . Even i just remembered that they exist when i typed this reply .

p2p as in torrents ? transmission

as for why ... to leech books , if you strip me down to the core , you will find a bookworm nerd , i know it's bad but resisting book when i can read it away is kinda hard for me

#5 Re: Off-topic » Knoppix 8.6 — first wide public release to abandon systemd » 2019-08-23 03:53:38

actually i have this big question in my mind but only a big if ...

what will happen to devuan if at any point of the future , debian decided to ditch systemd ?

#6 Re: Off-topic » Knoppix 8.6 — first wide public release to abandon systemd » 2019-08-21 14:22:36

after i read about systemd , i can see why everyone here and on mx forum avoids it ...

it practically broke all the UNIX tenet . But after digging while learning , i found that this kind of tragedy (from scholar point of view) are basically redhat trying to unify linux world . i don't mean to start a debate/flamewar/etc , but after breaking all the UNIX tenet did they realize that they're trying to make linux into something which we seek refugee from ?

i still haven't believe yet that redhat and all of their tragedy are inherently evil since they bring good result (economically) , but i agree that they are nasty . i came from windows to *nix-world because of ... you know windows thingies , but it turns out , *nix-world is also threatened by corporation too . so i give this opportunity to give my thanks for you guys here at devuan forum , mx forum , and my first circle of linux . i believe you guys can hold on until linux came back to it's former glory .

All Hail Linux ! Long Live Devuan ! Long Live MX ! Down to systemd !

P.S. sorry for my broken english

#7 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] [newbie] need help with minimal installation problem » 2019-08-21 13:59:36

it turns out both are the culprit . i red freeBSD handbook which practically giving the potential problem and why ...

my flash drive are 18 yo usb2 4gb , while my hard drive is Crucial M4 SSD , output per flops write are having stark contrast , that's why conv=sync need to be turned on for safety reason .

and uefi grub are practically gives you booting options

dear admins and mods , please mark this as solved and thanks

thanks , dd netinstall.iso finally boot

my bad , i was actually using netinstall version of ascii not the minimal install

it's not that it won't boot , but i automated grub to force start mx linux  (grub.conf : grub_delay:0) or i didn't use conv=sync when dd , the culprit is one of the two .

and setnet.sh won't run , bash unknown command

hello

a linux newbie here . this is my 5th to 6th month using linux (MX 18.3) . i want to learn more about linux and so i decided to take a journey from MX in my vacation time . my first circle of linux is quite a minority that avoids systemd . it's not that i hate systemd since i don't even encounter that in my first distro ever (MX) . so they advised me to try minimal devuan install .

so i downloaded netinstall.iso first as they advised . the manual told me to burn the iso manually or use dd . since my work laptop (HP 242 G1) don't have dvd drive , so i used dd . but it won't boot . so i googled and tried unetbootin , it boots , but then i encountered firmware problem , it won't load the firmware it keeps asking me for the missing non-free wi-fi firmware even if i placed the firmware on the installation drive (.deb version and the unpacked version from github) . so i then tried to use minimal install version .

while the minimal install works even while encountering that firmware problem , i then encountered second problem . i can't turn my wi-fi on , so i am stuck with the base install . i don't have access to ethernet since i am on my paid vacation , and i am using free hotel wi-fi . what should i do ?
