Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

Coming from Ubuntu if I want try to get a more recent version of a program than what's in Synaptic, I try to find a ppa [Personal Package Archive] for it. Usually it works and I can use recent version that might have bug fixes etc. In Devuan Jessie the default version for InkScape is .48 i think they are up .9x now. I wondered if there's a way I could get a more recent version?

Also I wasn't sure about this so wanted to ask...can I use a .deb or a repository from Debian? Or does Devuan need a .deb and repositories tweaked specifically for it?

Super stable distro, thank you for making it available.

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

Do not use Debian repos directly or ubuntu PPAs at all.  Look in Devuan backports for more recent versions

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

So in  /etc/apt/sources.list  I assume I uncomment,

deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-backports main

I did that and updated.

$ cat  /etc/apt/sources.list
## package repositories
deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie main
deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-updates main
deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-security main
deb http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-backports main

## source repositories
#deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie main
#deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-updates main
#deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-security main
#deb-src http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged jessie-backports main

deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable/ /
deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable/ /

In Synaptic Package Manager see two new entries:

Not Automatic: jessie-backports (auto.mirror.devuan.org)
jessie-backports  (auto.mirror.devuan.org)

I don't see a newer version of InkScape in Synaptic when I seach for it. Did I do it correctly?

Thanks.

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

Yes, but don't install everything in backports - that could get you into big trouble.  Just download what you need and comment that repo again.  There is also some magic that can be done with pinning but I don't know the details.  Maybe someone else will put it here.

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

No only Inkscape and dependencies is what I'd install if available. No major thing if not available but would be nice...

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

Devuan/ascii has 0.92.1-1 inkscape in repos.  You could wait till next release. soon I'm guessing.

IIRC, you shouldn't actually have to deactivate the repo again, as nothing should be pulled from backports automatically, except for updates of those packages you've installed from that source. Maybe someone can confirm that.

That depends whether it's pinned or not.  If not pinned . . . oops.  I know from experience.  Someone else (fsmithred?) will have to provide the details.

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

When the repos were new, backports had the wrong priority. That's been fixed. Twice. Once for packages.devuan.org and then once for pkgmaster.devuan.org. I don't know what the setting is in the repo, but apparently, it's possible to make a mistake. I like to keep backports pinned or disabled (commented out in sources.list), just in case.

If you want to check the priorities of whatever repos you have enabled, run

apt-cache policy

without any package name.

As I remember it . . . the first Valentine iso merged backports with the main Devuan repos.  That was a test to see how Amprolla would do with merging repos.  There was no way to comment it out so one had to be really careful about upgrading.  But not before I got bit.  I still have some bpo remnants on this system.  Everything is appropriately commented now.

Re: Looking for recent Version of Inkscape

I'll comment out backports like it was by default.  New version of Devuan has more recent Inkscape, thanks for help.
