[SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I just installed excalibur on a lenovo yoga and downloaded vivaldi file for install. I may be doing something (or everything) wrong but I have tried ALL the related info I can find with no success. Message is invariable that it is unable to locate package. I've checked my typing, tried a new download and a bunch of other things I'm not sure I remember at this point. I'm not a super terminal user and my "linux english" is sketchy but I've waded my way so far from DOS (yeah, before windows) red hat (not that I remember much} through windows hell and my Mac that I have had to assimilate for work so i'm not exactly a newbie. If somebody here has the patience to help me figure this out I'd appreciate it.

First, can Vivaldi be run on excalibur? I installed it myself on debian and my son installed it on my last laptop when he upgraded me to. devuan chimera.

If so, what are my install options?

What could be some reasons that the file can't be found?

Please and thank you!

PS Having same issue with installing Basilisk. Unable to locate package. I'm assuming at this point I'm missing a step.

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I have run Vilvaldi on Devuan, but it's been a while now, so I don't know if anything has changed. You are trying it from the .deb file, right?

For Basilisk, you don't need to "install" it. Just download the correct one, extract the folder somewhere, and run the file "basilisk" from inside the "basilisk" folder. I use Pale Moon and do it the same way. I extract the folder to the Templates folder and created a shortcut on the panel for it /home/ron/Templates/palemoon/palemoon. Just replace palemoon with basilisk.

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I am using the deb file. i downloaded it and attempted an install with these variations that were suggested in help instructions I could find

sudo apt-get -y install ./vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get -y install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb

Am I missing a step or using the wrong command? Is there something additional I need to do with the vivaldi file I downloaded?

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

Hi, usually when installing a local package I type the full path to the .deb even if i've opened the terminal within the folder the .deb's located at.

sudo apt-get install /path/to/package/vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb

For an easy GUI way to install local packages, try the Gdebi package installer, once installed you can just right-click a .deb and it will offer to install it with Gdebi.

Don't know if this helps but thought i'd throw it out there for general purposes. wink

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I think I see what I missed.

Installing Vivaldi via the terminal
After downloading a suitable package for your distro, you can use the following commands (from the directory where you saved Vivaldi) to install one of our Linux packages directly from the terminal [where ‘vivaldi*‘ equals the name of the Vivaldi install package].

Ubuntu/Debian based distros:
sudo apt-get -y install ./vivaldi*.deb

This part:(from the directory where you saved Vivaldi)
Unfortunately I'm not sure what they mean by this.

Thank you Green Jeans, that explains what I was missing. I always seem to miss the simple things...
I never realized there was a difference where you opened the terminal or that that was even really a thing...DOS was so much simpler (:

Unfortunately I'm not sure what they mean by this.

They're just talking about what I mentioned, having your pathways correct in your command, if in doubt always fill in the full path in your command, and that way the terminal can be opened anywhere and the commands issued from there.

sudo apt-get install /home/mamaforestcritter/Downloads/vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb

Something like the above, just replace the correct name for your user and whatever directory the .deb is in.

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I prefer to install the gdebi-core package and then use gdebi like this:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo gdebi <package-name>.deb

This approach has rarely (if ever) given me any problems.

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

My partner who is the "tech savvy" person has tried installing Vivaldi multiple times and it appears to be installed under internet but only  a GRAYED OUT screen shows up and then can't close...or uninstall!! He tried many instructions from the forum suggestions and other things from the Internet but nothing working. I have Devuan Excalibur 6. Something is very broken it seems to me!!! Again, I'm not the tech savvy one but if anyone can explain what's going on in terms he can follow/understand, that would be much appreciated!!!

Re: [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur

I used the instructions above to install it with apt install and the full path and it is working great. I was missing the full path for the install. Is it possible that the wrong vivaldi file is downloaded? What are the computer specs and which devuan excalibur download, example live usb or fully installed, which desktop are you using? If you can't uninstall there should still be some way to delete the file from your system. The more information you can detail about the setup. the better someone here can help you. Vivaldi does occasionally freeze on my son's windows laptop when we use it to watch tv and it takes xing out sometimes a couple of times or occasionally a restart to get vivaldi to behave so there is the possibility that there is a vivaldi glitch even though it usually works smoothly. (or the windows 10 on my son's laptop is having seizures,we don't really know...)
