Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

New versions of Openbox up today, 64 bit mini and maximal 1.0.7.

This is mainly a maintenance and update release, several dozen updates in the last two months, lots of programs and an important kernel update.

Palemoon is updated to very latest version (released yesterday in fact) 27.7.2.

All repo software updated to yesterday (2-01-2018).

Added acpi-support to both and added ntp to the minimal, some small fixes here and there and some work on icons etc.

Probably going to take the Mate versions and the 32 bit openbox down, they are old now and it's not likely i'll update them anymore, going to focus on 64 bit Openbox.

Howdy greenjeans...
After taking MiyoXTRA for a good test-drive ~ it was time to put Vuu-do on the 2nd partition.
I must say...I likes the Openbox and both your choices of apps & minimal system.
I'll be hanging with this setup as I did when I installed Deb 2. wayyy back when... yikes

and noticed...

Only `cause I'm using it right now, I checked & it sez, "Version: 27.6.2 (64-bit)" really no biggie. wink

Thanks for the kind words Stanz!!

Not sure why it's showing 27.6.2 on yours, is it the latest one? I just checked the build partition to be sure and it's showing me 27.7.2 as is this partition.

This is what I got...
Vuu-do Linux Release Notes:
Version: 1.0.7 Openbox-64 minimal (non-uefi)| Software updated to: 2-01-2018

and you added,

All Vuu-do images include (and are built with) Refracta-snapshot, Refracta-installer, and Refracta2usb, making it easy for anyone to "roll their own". Users are actively encouraged to do so...

I'd like too...if I could only find the "Refracta for Dummies" instructions!! yikes

If you're having trouble making a live iso, run refractasnapshot -d to get a more verbose error log (/var/log/refractasnapshot_errors.log). The most common cause of a failed build is to run out of space.

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

Hey guys, long time, you know how life gets in the way of linux sometimes, lol.

Just updating my intentions in case anyone is still interested in Vuu-do, I originally made Vuu-do to be an ultra-stable LTS version, with both parent distro (Devuan) and the kernel being LTS until 2020, and that's what it still is, haven't made any updated isos in a year, but all my machines on it are still running very smoothly, so I haven't seen a need. I usually just roll these mini-distros for myself once about every 3-5 years anyway.

I haven't messed with Devuan 2.0 much, and haven't seen a need to do so as i'm not quite ready to start making a new Vuu-do, so most likely scenario for the next Vuu-do will be Beowulf (Devuan 3) or even the version after that, depends on the support level for both the distro and the kernel, really wanting to stick with building on a stable LTS platform.

So though i'm gonna start playing with the new stuff this year, it will be early 2020 most likely before there is a new Vuu-do version. Takes me a ridiculously long time to do this stuff, lol, so it will probably take all year for me to get it right.

Hope everybody has been doing well! Have missed hanging out with y'all!

Much love,
~greenjeans

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

Oh it's not dead, just not updated. I actually started work on a new one using Daedalus last winter, but spring came and I had a mountain of stuff to do. It's a lot of work, the original took me at least 6 months or better and that's me working on it for a few hours every night.

Lot's of new issues though that were not present in the first version of Devuan. And kernel bloat and ram usage really wore me out, so I put it on hold, will re-visit when winter hits.

Was actually thinking of doing a MATE version of Devuan first, something like the default version of Devuan, the one that uses Refracta-installer and just installs XFCE as opposed to the ordeal of doing a standard net-install with the Debian installer. As just kind of a community service.

But also possibly doing a Vuu-Do version with MATE, with original artwork and theme and icons etc. Chopped like a madman of course without the niceties you find in an actual distro as per the Vuu-Do way, lol.

I still use Vuu-do quite a bit, 2 of 3 partitions on my laptop are still Vuu-Do, I just use an imageapp to have a newer browser, everything still works on the original just fine, better than fine in fact, it is faster in every way, like lightning quick compared to my Daedalus MATE install. And uses a hella lot less ram, which is good for my old machine.

ETA: I really should run a new copy of Vuu-do, not that anybody is still downloading it, but I found and fixed a couple bugs with some scripts that I wrote, and now my OCD is yelling at me because the ones with the flaws are still up there last I checked, lol.

Shoot, I guess I could do a re-run, fix the little bugs I mentioned, and replace the browser with an imageapp. It's not like everything else on it doesn't work, it all works fine. I don't know that anybody would want to try it though. But it would be a good one to throw onto older hardware, it's so light on resource-usage.

I put a titanic amount of work into that thing, I have a really deep appreciation for all the developers out there that make Devuan and all it's derivatives, those guys are heroes to me.

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

Well for some reason the forum is not allowing me to edit my original post in this thread??

But following up, loaded up a new run of Vuu-do Maximal last night to Sourceforge, it's what I described in my thread about the library and my previous post in this thread. From the revised release notes:

*News* November 2024: Some bugs fixed, some Appimages added for a modern browser and also the database program Symphytum (for my local public library's old machines). Making the appimages native so as to access easily through menu, located at /usr/local/bin so as to be in the PATH, and .desktops in /usr/share/applications with the others. Being appimages they are essentially sandboxed from the rest of the system to an extent, they contain all their own dependencies.

Firefox 128 Extended Support Release. The files it makes are in /home/[username]/.mozilla
Symphytum database is in /home/[username]/.local/share/giowisys/Symphytum

Note they are in users home but are hidden normally, you will need to enable hidden files in the file manager view menu whenever you want to see files that start with a dot.

So this is version 1.08, essentially 1.07 with the changes noted above. The repo is now archived and there will be no updates as such. There are quite a few minor updates still available in the archive repo, but they are just that, minor version upgrades. I have changed sources.list to the archive so you can apply the updates if you like, but I have not done so myself and have not tested any of them, so breakage might occur and other unforeseen issues.

You can of course update the browser with a newer appimage, but Firefox 128 is long-term support. Do NOT try to update Symphytum, there is no newer version that works with this system.

Everything still works wonderfully in Vuu-do, and a modern browser was really all that HAD to be updated to work properly. This system was built on and for hardware made around 2010-2012 and is amazingly quick on such and even faster on newer machines. It would probably work on hardware going all the way back to 2005 or so as long as it was a 64-bit CPU.

One thing: to view webp images you have stored locally you'll need to open them in the browser, as the old image viewing program onboard does not have that capability.

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

I'm bored so I'm making a proto-vuudo-32-bit system. I'll share it with you if you want to dress it up and take it out. Or you could do your own. One problem with this plan that I see is that there doesn't seem to be a 32-bit appimage of firefox. I spent zero time looking for a workaround to this issue.

The Procedure:
Boot your vuudo iso in qemu or vbox and run

dpkg --get-selections > pkglist64

Copy that file out of the VM so you can use it.
Edit the file to change :amd64 to :i386 and rename it to pkglist32 (or whatever you want)
Change the kernel to linux-image-686-pae and comment out the specific kernel version and the linux-libc-dev lines around it.
Comment out liblsan0, libtsan0 something-ubuntu-font and everything with refracta in the name. The ''dpkg --set-selections command below will puke on any missing packages and tell you in case I missed any. (like yad for instance)

Make a virtual disk.
Boot a live-iso and do a deboostrap install of 32-bit jessie in the virtual disk. I used a refracta_11 i386 iso for this.
Copy the pkglist32 into the debootstrap dir.
Chroot the new system and set root password, create user, add jessie-security line to sources.list, create or copy /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00norecommends and run

apt-get update
apt-get install dselect
dselect update
dpkg --set-selections < pkglist32
apt-get -u dselect upgrade

It failed. I said "no" when it asked if I agreed to the license for firmware-ipw2x00. I think it's working the second time. I had to do
dpkg --clear-selections && dpkg --set-selections < pkglist32 to get the dselect-upgrade to work. (I think it's working. not done yet.)

Update: It installed, but it's not booting. First there was no initramfs and i got a kernel panic, now I made one and I get to initramfs prompt. sad
Time for sleep. Maybe I'll dream the solution.

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

Hey buddy, I misspoke On IRC because i'm old and befuddled, I actually made a 32 bit Vuu-do minimal in late 2017, but you're right, haven't seen any 32 bit appimages so that idea may be out the window.

Just uploaded another 64 bit maximal with a ton more of small bug fixes and some tweaks and another new extension for the file manager, this cleans up a lot of messes I still had. Hopefully this will be the last run of 1.08.

1.09 will be the next one, updated to all the end-of-life packages left on the archive repo, almost 300 of 'em including a new kernel, that will take some days probably to test system and destroy cruft, preliminary test says it should be all good.

After that will update the minimal for shoots and giggles. And then we'll see.

Re: Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!!

Posting this now, from Vuu-do 1.08-1, the newest iso I just uploaded last night. Burned a liveCD and used the "load to ram" option at boot.

Wow, this one is so much more polished than the last one, it's almost bizarre how fast everything runs when loaded into ram, no delay at all on first open of the menu and utilities and smaller programs, even gimp loads much faster than it does on my conventional install of Daedalus.

If I could figure out how to make persistence work on this (strictly with regard to all the different program settings, saving regular data is easy enough) , i'd run it all the time like this I think.

I uploaded this new version to sourceforge, but I left the previous version up there, I was kind of worried that I might delete it right when somebody was downloading, lol.

Maybe, if you really want to add 'persistence', have a discussion with  antiX/MX Linux developers, they're a friendly lot.
