Is "apt autoremove" still trustworthy (as it used to be)?

What's your take?
Do you blindfold trust it?

Last  couple of months, it gave me some questionable results.
I'll give you an example:

1) I ran "apt autoremove"  (as root) -> no results.
2) I installed playonlinux.
3) It trigger the installation of cabextract, python-wxgtk3.0 and python-wxversion.

4) after playing some days, I uninstalled it.
5) I gave "apt autoremove"  (and answered "Y") and uninstalled the packages cabextract and libmspack0.

As one can see:
a) It failed to detect the python-wxgtk3.0 and python-wxversion packages and
b) It uninstalled libmspack0 that neither installed by playonlinux, nor was previously detected by "apt autoremove".

Ehm...I fell that I'm missing something!  roll

PS. ASCII is my 1st Devuan installation. I was on Debian till the Jessie release.

The aptitude command auto-autoremoves so it must be "trustworthy", whether the user is also "trustworthy" is another question entirely...

OK! I'll try it (instead of apt).
THANKS for the suggestion!  wink

Dear Head, you realizing that you're posting at Devuan's forum and not the Ubuntu's one?
How many chances you give, finding a novice or even an average Linux user here?

What? Metapackages???  yikes
Thanks but NO THANKS!!!
This is a sure way to turn your OS, into bloat and fatware.
Something like, what Open SUSE became.

1 in 1, apparently:

https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=2879

But don't worry, jitterssnowpaw seems to have moved on to MX Linux now and he's pestering their forum instead big_smile

E485:~$ aptitude why libmspack0
i yudit-common Suggests yudit (= 2.9.6-8)
p yudit Suggests ttf-mscorefonts-installer
p ttf-mscorefonts-installer Depends cabextract
p   cabextract                Depends  libmspack0 (>= 0.4)
E485:~$

So that was because cabextract was removed then, I presume.

E485:~$ aptitude why python-wx{gtk3.0,version}

Looks like a circular dependency to me, APT isn't infallible.

I really think you have an attitude problem.

I don't like your tone and I'm not here to be involved on your personal flame wars.

It's outrageous that you are blaming an absent person, that can't defend himself.

I'm not interesting for your sayings. Have it your way.
Good luck with your project!

Just in case there is any confusion here: I have absolutely nothing to do with Devuan and my opinions are mine alone and do not reflect those of dev1galaxy.org in any way.

I have no "project" ongoing.

Re: Is "apt autoremove" still trustworthy (as it used to be)?

I can confirm all of the above.   When in a mood HoaS can be an equal opportunity offender who "blesses" many forums with his presence.  His track record on this forum to date has actually been fairly benign compared to what has happened elsewhere.  I also know that there can be no offense if none is taken.  Let it be like water on a duck's back.  I'm all for "free speech" but if things get too disruptive, there is always the big, red "time out" button.  wink

Devuan's leaders has to do something about it, because  with persons like you in leadership, Devuan looks insanelly idiotic!

OK guys! If you want to turn Devuan users away from you, it's simple.
Just continue your idiotic way.

For the second time: I am not involved with Devuan at all, in any way.

Re: Is "apt autoremove" still trustworthy (as it used to be)?

I found the autoremove is pretty useful for a lot of lib packages.
For gui's and desktop interfaces.. well lets just say some are more bloated and  chalked full of dependencies than others.
I have sheer broken cinnamon on mint because of this.
I've also ended up booting to console all thanks to auto remove smile.

You should have paid more attention to what was about to be removed then tongue

Read the link I provided in my first post in this thread, it explains this problem and how to fix it.

Be fair Giorgos, irritated you may be on HoaS but you shouldn't blame it on Devuan; in my view, this forum, as well as the distro, is quite well maintained.

Cheers,
Olav
