Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

Congrats for the official release of Beowulf! A tiny bit anticlimactic for me, since I've been running it since January, but nice to have it official! :-)  Good show, everybody on the Devuan Team!

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

Congrats to all involved, probably the best version of gnu/linux available in my opinion.  To add i downloaded and installed to a usb stick yesterday with encryption and it is working great, added some parameters to make it a bit speedier for usb, but overall the install went flawlessly.

Congratulations to the team, epic work. I've tested the netinstall image in QEMU and I can confirm that my reported locale bug[0] is squished :-)

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

Congratulations!

Can you please provide a full set of DVD ISO like:
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu … 4/iso-dvd/

? It would be very desirable at least for the latest files from oldstable ASCII.

Thank you very much.

@bimon: simply use the Download link on the top of the forum page and look at what you find there. Is this what you desire?

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

I need a standalone FULL set of files (including those from Debian) available offline to install without an Internet connection.

If something goes wrong with Debian mirrors or Devuan mirrors or Devuan online smart merging with Debian it would be very desirable to have a full set of offline disks like it is present for Centos/Redhat, even Debian and many more distros.

It seems download link has only a single ISO with a minimum set of files just to bootstrap the installation process and get system downloading missing files from the Internet?

How can Devuan suit to only a single 4GB disk if Debian of the same release level takes at least 3 (three) disks?

Do 4GB Devuan desktop ISO in conjunction with 3 Debian ISOs of the same release have all the deb files ever used?
Can someone please do a script to merge those ISOs to produce 3x4GB full pure Devuan ISOs ?

Can /etc/apt/sources.list be configured to take local ISOs file://  like  1 Devuan ISO + 3 Debian ISOs to provide full set of debs for an offline work?

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

Have you ever used all 4 Debian DVDs for an offline install? I never have needed anything else but the "desktop" DVD.

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

Hi

There seems to be no full images of the entire devuan archive. And I don't think there will ever be. So you must use one of the other solutions and make for instance a sdcard or hdd with the packages you need besides the iso. Or make your own local copy of the entire archive.

Almost no one will have the need for everything offline these days. If I had to do some enterprise work with a good default configuration I would make a default good setup and copy it over to the other installs.

Have a nice day
Lars H

It seems a very good idea. When I install a box with Devuan, I keep the downloaded packages on a USB stick. When I install the next box, I copy all the downloaded packages to /var/cache/apt/archives/.

Indeed. apt-cacher is great when you admin a network of Devuan boxes.

I've been an ardent AntiX user for several years, but this Beowulf release is calling to me, I've dabbled with Devuan before now, but have always gone back to my regular distro - maybe my time has come to convert..... smile

Re: Beowulf 3.0.0 is here!

I am still running ascii, but am looking forward to doing the dist-upgrade to beowulf.  I did a little test on it today, and thought I would share.

I created two identical VMs, one installing ascii, and the other with beowulf.  Then I did the dist-upgrade on ascii.  It all went very smoothly.

Here are the commands I used to create the vms, I chose the same options during both installations.

virt-install --name=devuan_beowulf_vm --vcpus=2 --memory=2048 -c /storage3/iso/devuan_beowulf/installer-iso/devuan_beowulf_3.0.0_amd64-desktop.iso --disk /storage3/kvmhdd/devuan_beowulf,size=15 --graphics spice

virt-install --name=devuan_ascii_vm --vcpus=2 --memory=2048 -c /storage3/iso/devuan_ascii_2.0.0_amd64_dvd-1.iso --disk /storage3/kvmhdd/devuan_ascii,size=15 --graphics spice

The installer for beowulf was the old-style texty installer.  I got the iso via the torrent link on the devuan announcement.

1.  The boot screen for upgraded-ascii is nice with Devuan Beowulf colors and Devuan logo.  The one for Beowulf is texty like the installer, and is actually how my current ascii system looks.

2.  In the out-of-the-box install, Beowulf uses less memory.  I restarted the VMs a few times, and usage did vary a little, but it was right around 14 MB less used for Beowulf.
