Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN MXLINUX!

We gave you several easy ways to be able to access mxlinux file from devuan. If you want it to work in devuan the same as it works in mxlinux, we need more information. (And it will probably be more complicated.)

What desktop environment, display manager and file manager does mxlinux use?
What desktop environment, display manager and file manager is installed in devuan?

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

Hi,

I didn't know that ...

but any way, what i means by “to wait for developers” it is to wait for a sort of update, or wherever, in which this problem can be solved without much on the side of the user, because the whole thing is difficult, at least for me, and i don't want to brake the system AGAIN. He said "and it will probably be more complicated". And he need more information ... Some times to get information for me it is difficult since i don't know the commands in order to identify ... i was searching in Google to know the command for the 'display manager' and  'file manager' and found nothing understandable, clear or simple but a lot of confused statements.

Do you still wanting to help this newbie  person?.

-- please, tell me step by step what do i have to do.

Thanks!

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

I am not much help here but from your signature i guess your file manager in Devuan is Thunar. Searching around a bit it seems Thunar uses udisks2 (not sure if that's always the case) for mounting stuff which in turn relies on policykit for permissions (See: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=505400). Not that i can really help you here but i am curious if you can mount anything at all. Like does mounting USB devices work?

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

Well may be in the future this facility will be provided.

There are not problems with USB devices.

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

i realized today that when the system start and is displaying all these lines of information on the black screen ... there is one line that is saying something (it run to fast) like can't mount ext3 because incompatibility ... is it not this problem maybe due to a systemd?. MXLinux do not run init systemd but has systemd ...

Just in case to let you know ...

Thanks.

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

OK, i'll take a shot at this. My best guess is this related to missing polkit permissions for udisks2 so maybe you could try the following:

  • Open /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks2.policy (yes, it's ugly as fuck - lennartware...).

  • Look for

    <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-system">
  • Below it find the tags auth_any, auth_active and auth_inactive.

  • Change their values to either yes or auth_self (i seriously don't know which one makes more sense).

  • Reboot (as i have zero idea what what lennarts polkit crapware needs to reread it's settings).

  • Hope for the best.

Word of caution: I don't have the slightest experience with this but it that's really the cause waiting for Debian and thereby Devuan to change the defaults is likely to need eternal patience.

No there is nothing like  auth_any, auth_active and auth_inactive [and it is a very long list ...]

Are you asking to change 'allow' for 'auth_self'?

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

No, i ment to change auth_admin and auth_admin_keep to either

auth_self

(according to docs that should ask for authenticaten - root password?) or

yes

(which should just do it without further questions).

I am really stabbing in the dark here but i guess it's worth a try.

I'm back again, no it didn't blow up but nothing happened ...

*About my previous commentary ... this time i got to read the whole line at the screen when restarted the system:

couldn't mount ext3 due to future incompatibilities

Sad but it wasn't a big chance. Might try

yes

instead of auth_self if you aren't bored with it yet but i don't have all that much hope.

This is very likely unrelated. As shown by the blkid you posted on the last page your MXLinux partition uses ext4.

Re: Problems going into another operative system. [solved]

you are not going to believe this, i went back to /etc/fstab and i changed again the line:

/dev/sda3 / auto defaults,noatime 1 1

for /dev/sda3: LABEL="MXLinux" UUID="66f3f330-78b2-4767-bc3e-8a9e7750e476" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="000f1103-03"

and this time it works!!

Thanks!!

Good. Just so you know what that line does...

/dev/sda3 / auto defaults,noatime 1 1

That says to mount sda3 (your MXLinux partition) at the root of the filesystem. Which means you would be running mx, not devuan.

Whereas, this line:

/dev/sda3 /mnt auto defaults,noatime 1 1

mounts the mx partition at /mnt, where it is available, but is not the system that's running at that time.

Changing '/dev/whatever' to 'UUID=' or 'LABEL=' is just a different way of identifying the partition. Sometimes it's necessary to do that. (e.g. multiple disks in the computer)
