Hi, there is so much out there I haven't heard about... Thanks for the tips on browser filtering.
On this "Web Browser" I have eMatrix, it's quite good.
But before that even gets a chance to do much of anything, I have a host file web-address advertisement blocker, setup from here...
https://www.putorius.net/block-unwanted … ts-on.html
On FF-latest I use noscript.
The flashpeak-slimjet has a sandbox, but I rarely use slimjet, at some point I installed it (and keep it updated) to hide my surfing history from my house mates (I've moved away from them now...) who were very suspicious of my use of linux (Must be a gold digging hacker!) and I often found evidences of someone going through my stuff while I was out of the house. as a side note... I set up "motion" and a web-cam on my laptop (in the bookshelf) to film them wandering around checking my drawers, but they couldn't turn my PC on/login. Windows gamers, who thought they would get the upper hand.
I have ff-esr just for web-radio, and the occasional web search (google). I find duckduckgo finds most of what I need.
I have tor for downloading movies... with qbittorrent for iso images from Linux distros, like Devuan, or anything else I want to try out. Trinity and slack on my lap top... Slack looks too hard to setup from scratch, bit like gentoo, but I have looked.
I setup lm-sensors (sensors-detect) for monitoring sensors in the box.
For displays, I have gkrellm and conky, which have a little lag time, but are helpful to see at a glance what the heck is going on for fans, temps and voltages, as well as proc/cpu, mem, swap and drive usage and top.
It gets hot here sometimes, so my box is setup to flow through, with 4 case fans, the TruePower 750W has it's own fan, and the Graphics has it's pair, and the cpu is a noctua dual fan as well. I really should check my power consumption, but with solar panels on the roof, we pay sweet f.a. for electricity.
Right now, with all the fans maxed out, and about 26c ambient, gpu is 35c (fans 80%), cpu is 36. and I have 2 browsers open, and Konsole is doing apt update checks. and some system check script (it's just a list of jobs).
With a new battery just installed in my lappy, I'm considering using it with slax just for Face-crook. I'm getting scammer invites a couple times a week, with wat-a-sapp as well (though I rarely use that).
Anyhow, thanks for the heads-up, I will keep all these tips in mind and test them out at some stage.
Thank you
What's the difference between your girlfriend, your mistress and your wife?
Your girlfriend says, "are you finished already",
your mistress says, "are you finished yet" and
your wife says, "beige, I think I'll paint the ceiling beige"!
I do know that garlic has health benefits. smile ... despite the smell they create. Hahaha!
If you are able to follow the directions, and cope with chewing raw garlic, you may be amazed with the feeling and energy increase
(via our body not having to use energy continually battling internal foreign attacks).
Like onions.., if it's digested (cooked or raw), most of the benifits (except taste) are removed AND it makes us smell.
ymmv. It won't hurt to try.
Thanks zapper, It's good to get a confirmation that I'm not going mad. I thought that may be the case... with "madaidans-insecurities".
aluma: the smbios program it quite interesting, great to see all those details...
I had thought I might find some devious code, or expose a back-door... maybe, when I get more acquainted with the program/s.
One thing I found was the python error with "info" and python3. (this system is not setup for progamming, as such, but I may compile source if required)

root@GamesBox:/root progress... hardware.
I took my box apart yesterday and cleaned the case, and all the fans and filters. And rewired everything to look neater and more organised. also removing hardware like hdd drive bay shelves. A Fractal case.
I reset the cmos to defaults, still on the latest bios version for my motherboard.
reconfigured the bios to switch off unneeded resources, like eth, audio... serial the port irq reservation (having no printer/scanner attached).
after a few reboots, I had the bios boot setup as I like it, and managed to get full clock out of the ram
(up until yesterday it ran at ~3200, today it runs as spec, 3600) a nice surprise. And with performance boost turned off, clocked the cpu back up to 4000.
I also found I had not fitted the nvme ssd correctly with the mounting as well as the heatsink (this maybe why it was rebooting!!!) The plastic film was still on the heatsink (had shrivelled the plastic film a bit but not permanently damaged the heat-transfer compound)
So, now with less chance over overheating I wait to see if any surprise reboots come to being (like a ghost in the machine or something).
I strive for progress, not perfection... and I think I'm making headway towards that.
Thank you for contributing and taking the time to read.
cheers
I had a similar problem with one of those versions, I switched to 6.5 from backports
uname -a
Linux GamesBox 6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.5.10-1~bpo12+1 (2023-11-23) x86_64 GNU/LinuxI am guilty as accused, ... But when I got this keyboard I still used windows.
I am considering trying the software in wine...
Not too sure about it, and I reload my OS far to frequently to re-establish hardware through a virtual software interface.
On the other hand, when I ran DiD's F22 off winxp from vBox (virtual Box), Mandriva, I was using the macro keys to shortcut the multi keys required to
turn the radar on, check for targets, aquire targets, select weapons, list & fire when in range, turn off radar. Each confrontation, forgive my memory.
I had a logitech (i think, had a couple over the years) 3 axis 9 button joystick with a shift key, razer oroochi mouse, and this keyboard. It was complex but immersive.
Anyhow, have a great Day.
Thank you aluma, I'll check it out.
cheers!
On the white login screen, move your mouse towards the bottom left, there is a box, select plasma-x11
Hi, just a heads up, as far as I can find...
I was reminded by a post here, I just went through my /etc/apt/sources-list.d/ and found the useless razer repo there... and deleted it.
I use a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate RZ03-0038 keyboard. It has macro recording for some special keys.
It worked really good in M$win-blows, but is mostly useless with GNU/Linux as far as I have found.
May as well just use software based macro recording. Up to now I haven't bothered to get into that.
I have not found any open-source apps or driver modules that enable macro keys to this date that just works. ( i am not a programmer)
With M$win I had it setup to do multiple keystrokes for gaming. But it was also very useful for programs like Excel and Word, while I was at University.
Just recently my logitech bt mouse failed (the type that comes with it's own usb bt dongle),
So I hunted down a decent replacement, but using my wifi/bt card resources instead of a usb dongle.
I got a logi MX Master 3S, it has multiple scroll wheels (2) scroll latching/smooth button and 3 extra side buttons.
With out hacking it too much, it's mostly useless (VLC has some default settings that switches thing around a bit),
but generally does function as any other simple mouse.
I have solaar, that keeps an eye on the battery level, and some simple adjustments, like resolution.
The BT registration is useless, if I pair it to another OS on this box, it unpairs from the other.
Pain in the butt! I still need a usb mouse on the desk in case I want to try anything else.
It does have 3 different (what I thought were) pairing options with a special button but no info about them in the manual, or online as far as I have found.
I hope this helps someone save some money and brain-power trying to maximise their usage of these somewhat expensive door stops.
Cheers, Regards Glenn
Hi, my bios ver is up-to-date as of checking just this week.
for my mobo... 2 gen old, last 2023/10/31 I have it and have also configured some profiles as well.
I use legacy boot, and have bios-grub as first partition at 2Mb on each ssd.
Thanks for the tips on SMBIOS.
My wifi is a pcie card, so no danger of borking the MAC address (I switch off all onboard chips not in use or required, sound and ethernet, irq reservation for LP)
It is time I opened the box and cleaned all the fans, reseated the heatsink and checked the fan cabling, a bit late for spring, but a dusty environment shortens the yearly maintenance.
Back with the overclocking AV7 mobos (last century) with a soldering iron and box-cutter, I have had to remove the cmos chip, take it into work (like on a sunday...) and reflash it from a floppy disk because I had ruined the bits... lol Dual bios too... (not required lately)
I had 4 of those asus mobo of slightly differing configs.
Thank you for the tips. I will reflash, reset to defaults, attach a ssd, and then turn off what I don't want (mostly just wasted resources), rebooting at each change increment) I leave the dvd burner disconnected as well, unless I really need it (i think it attracts trouble, like flys to putrid rubbish, polite way to say...).
This is my entertainment system these days, no tv, stereo system or vcr/dvd, my PC is all of that.
I'll post back with any progress, thank you.
so far so good with the apt settings.
Funny thing, although I have got rid of most pulse-audio packages (I still have libpulse... and pipewire-pulse...)
occasionally a new folder is made in /home/glenn/ "pulse". It is empty, but I wonder how it is put there.
still a work in progress, pulse is like a virus, hard to pin down and eradicate.
well, I hope an expert responds soon. all the best.
Thank you golinux, you are not wrong!
This may not be what you are looking for, but...
Devuan has xfce4 by default, and kde/plasma with x11 works.
I have used gnome apps before (a long, long time ago) and found
openbox with xorg (x11) I was able to install apps from gnome and kde and it worked no probs on a very old laptop.
Just my 2cents worth.
I hope you figure it out.
Hi, at the cli login, try
startplasma-x11instead of startx
It's probably trying to start wayland... mine borks with that as well.
I hope this helps.
pcalvert: I tried madaiden's tips, but he stops explaining and just lists lots of stuff...
I looked at so many web-pages now with little progress, I ordered a decent book (recent and GNU/Linux orientated), should be here soon. ;-)
I am considering switching facebook to a different browser, instead of the most convenient ff-latest,
Like flashpeak-slimjet, it's a pain to setup because I don't use sudo, but it has it's own sandbox...
I used to use it a while ago for surfing entertainment sites when I was really bored and depressed.
Thanks for the tips, Zapper. I have privoxy... and http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ (now updated 2012 https://www.putorius.net/block-unwanted … s-on.html) for blocking addverts to reduce bandwidth.
ptunnel gets the udp packets sent through tcp, so are picked up by the vpn leaving little trace afaik.
I ran halflife and counterstrike off a winxp install in vbox for ages... testing hardware, but also for fun.
Thanks aluma, I also have done just that... especially when I had win10 running, I used to disconnect hdds not required for the session.
Thanks everyone. I have a lot less trouble when I don't have FB sitting there open and logged in.
But my family and friends like to use it to talk, and show off.
For the love of life!
Talk soon...
ahahahaha! Cheers!
Hi, thanks for the info, Zapper and aluma.
I also play games as a type of escape... I call it, "Possitive Distraction(s)".
Like those old games, I have OpenTTD, My last map was huge, I had 2300 trains.
But I changed the config so I am the only human (supposed to be on-line multiplayer competition) and some bots when I have setup my virtual trainset. lol
It's a lot of fun, and challenging logistics, and better than a win98(plus?) screen saver.
I spent all day yesterday & this morning trying to install and configure selinux to get a sandbox play-area for firefox,
but even after I get selinux to load it won't boot through to a login-gui (sddm in my case).
Still a work in progress... I guess if it was easy everybody would be doing it.
I also have to watch out not to share too much info, because of those data mining... for details I may inadvertently reveal.
My pc shutdown again last night just after a movie finished... I had no browsers open then, but had just cleared the cache.
I use about 5 different browsers... for different things. I guess that just makes it more complicated.
I haven't had any consequences either. I have to consider the global authorities... I use rumble for news programs, not the TV.
I may be considered a deviate dissident... linux user. I don't think I am, just wanting some truth and freedom.
Anyhow, it's still a work in progress (I'm not giving up yet).
The-Amnesiac-Philosopher
It really makes me sick that viruses and bacteria invade my body without my permission...
I just did a short 3 week program to rid my body of an unknown virus...
Getting an appointment at the GP was going to be a 10 to 21 day wait!
<edit>
I was getting night sweats quite a bit since covid shots
</edit>
I went to a hospital casualty dept, and they ran some tests, cov2 and flu. they didn't know what was the problem (I wanted a dose of antibiotics...wrong!)
I had/have a back injury, the chiro did a test using Kinesiology(spelling?) and she said my body was riddled with virii.
I used raw garlic 3 times a day, 1 hour outside meal times (no sugars, no digestive acids... very important)
Chew the garlic (one clove, it's hot like chilli, makes my eyes and nose runny...) and swallow.
gets into our lymphatic system through the mouth, and into the blood system through the intestine (2 pronged attack). Kills virii.
I've done this a few times now, I used to get hay-fever that led to bronchitis, went away for 15 years. It really worked for me without trying to kill my immune and digestive systems.
it's cheaper on the pocket too. Raw and fresh, not pills, not pickled, not cooked (make us stink!)
ymmv.
I hope this helps.
Hi, all this is very interesting... thank you for the tips.
I thought I knew what I was doing, but all of these replies suggest I haven't even started.
I, like most am just a general user who tries to keep the screen door shut, But I also like to have the lights off so I can't be seen too easily from outside to begin with.
I'm going to be busy... If I want to do this properly and not just blindly hacking away at configs in hope it might help or work better than a clean install.
I was trying to follow this guide, but my system either won't boot or blocks social websites... I can listen to web-radio stations but not get facebook to load. Firefox-latest...
I put this here as a warning, because it seems incomplete or not for a system connected to the www. (no offence intended, )
ref. https://madaidans-insecurities.github.i … el-modules
It seems some of the kernel commands I used from there to my grub config were stopping that social webpage connections.
this is the grub edits I had made, but restored my backup today...

I had a longer version the day before, but I haven't got a copy of it to show you.
this is what I have now... wip,
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="console=tty12 vga=794 modeset.nouveau=0 nokmsboot ipv6.disable=1 security=none apparmor=0 amd_iommu=on"amd_iommu is the only edit I have kept for today.
I also made a list of changes to /etc/sysctl.conf, but just "net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=1 # Ignore broadcast pings"
and to /etc/modules, a large list of /bin/false for unnecessary modules.
But, neither of the last 2 file edits stopped my boot or connection to the home wifi and social pages.
Anyhow, that's my observation so far.
I'll move on to the pages suggested here and take notes for my future research and actions.
Thank you again, bye for now.
And now, something completely different...

If only...
I Love Gary Moore. Thin Lizzi played in aus, a free concert in the gardens. Gary was on that tour I believe.
I never heard of April Wine before... but I've heard the saying so many times, If You See Kay! never knew what it was about. Thank you.
I hardly slept last night reminiscing the old days... but I'm happy about it.
Eric Johnson I saw with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (G3), brilliance, gold brilliance!
I first saw JS on his surfing... tour, with Stu Hamm. The drummer was fantastic too.
Joe went to give away one of his black strat-killers (Ibanez) guitars, but the security was so intense here back then, if you got up out of your chair, you were leaving or going to the rest room. And they were throwing people out for arguing with them. That was Queensland politics back then, a police state (Joe Bijelky Peterson, I don't care how he spelt his name, glad he's dead). My girlfriend and I were in the third row, If I jumped up to get the guitar, I would have missed the rest of the concert and probably got beaten up and the guitar smashed as well. Those were the days. Nobody took the guitar, Joe was stunned!
Wish I could play and understand music like those guys. Thank you for the memories and new music. I only just discovered Rust and Journmey in the last couple of years, lol. I must have been stoned or something.
Hi, Thank you for your replies.
aluma: I too have experienced windows based trojans and virii, and helped my friends and family clean up their hardrives to get their systems back up cleanly.
They were busy and quite exciting days, not so much these days.
Camtaf: When I began using Linux, I had 2 boxes, and eventually had vbox with winxp for windows games as well.
When my working life stopped due to my back injury, and the ensuing depression and then anxiety, I slowly stripped the second box for parts for my main machine (GamesBox).
One thing I know, nobody but me uses this keyboard or can login if they did, I don't know any other Linux users except online.
stultumanto: I haven't looked into NVRAM as yet, I've seen talk about clearing nvram, but I have more to do in that area.
I have 4 different distros on this computer, each have their own ssd. I often use one of them to transfer files when I stuff something up.
All my personal files are on a separate 4Tb sata hdd, and when required I do a clean install, like you have described.
I have a feeling the hack was delivered through a firefox session with facebook. I am looking into selinux sandboxing for firefox... but I'm just starting to look there, my todo list.
tbh, the shutdown may have been caused by my new nvme ssd, it may need some heatsink compound, and/or better securing with a screw.
It does not explain the case and cpu fans being changed to off in the bios screens, the date was differnt too, had advanced 6 or 7 hours.
Thanks again, this is a work in progress. And now I have started, I'll report back with any findings.
p.s. I have also tried to find in the system logs any errors or warnings that may have been written just before shutdown, but found none.(maybe because of the time change, I was looking for the wrong thing) I'm generally not a suspicious person...
Cheers, Regards Glenn
America has some really cool love songs. That's where I started playing, on a gut string classical.
That vid of Triumph was amazing, 1984 was a great year for Rock music, imo.
One of the songs, and vocalist reminded me of Chickenfoot. :-) (the way they sound...)
thanks. :-)
well, same here except I haven't knowingly used the refracta install method.
I just changed the battery in my 2013 laptop running Daedalus and got similar errors.
But the /etc/resolv.conf only had the modem local gateway listed, with nameserver home.
I changed it and set the attrib as Fred said above, but will check it out again tomorrow sometime.
