#751 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-05-10 23:52:41

Out of curiosity, I've tried making a Miyo Beowulf in two separate ways. Mainly, I wanted to test regaining the menu if a user upgrades to Beowulf.

1. Tried creating a Miyo from plain Beowulf. Got it working, but lots of problems to deal with since Beowulf is still early in development.
2. Tried upgrading a MiyoLinux ASCII to Beowulf. Things went much better; as mentioned in the release notes, it hasn't been tested (until now), and I lost the right-click menu, but it was quickly working again with running the following command...

sudo cpanm Linux::DesktopFiles

The main problem...which I haven't taken the time to try and figure out...is the Shutdown menu. It doesn't work...it only shows Logout and Cancel at this point. I did try several different things without success. The only way that I could reboot or shutdown was from the terminal or logging out and using Slim.

So...

If anyone decides that they want to dist-upgrade MiyoLinux from ASCII to Beowulf, be prepared for breakage. I would advise against it at this time...unless you're willing to suffer the consequences. LOLOLOL! tongue

#753 Re: Installation » On putting boot loader on its own partition » 2018-05-09 04:08:11

The Refracta Installer does ask where you want to install grub...the MBR, Partition, etc.

Ron, I don't know if this will help for future reference, but...

If you choose MBR, it will put Grub on /dev/sda, and that Grub will be in control...and would be in control IF you have any other operating systems on your computer. If you choose Partition, then a list of partitions is given for you to choose from.

Ron, if you choose Partition, you would normally want to install Grub on the same partition that you're going to use for the Operating System. For example, I have a hard drive with 10 partitions. If I want to install a distro on partition 9...or..../dev/sda9, then I would also install Grub on /dev/sda9.

Then after installation, I would reboot the computer into the main operating system and run...

sudo update-grub

That system will then find the newly installed system so that it's available to choose from at the Grub screen.

Okay...after reading siva's and catprints' remarks about Surf, I decided to give it a try.

I like it. It is light, isn't it!?!?! smile

Since I'm new to it, I cheated and made a desktop entry for it so that it shows in my menu, and I have it open to Startpage so that when I click on a search result, it opens it in a new window...which I need until I get the hang of everything.

Got Youtube videos working. Now I guess I need to look over the man page to see if there's anything about improving font size/rendering.

Thanks guys. This has been fun.

#755 Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] CMST (Network Manager) background color changes » 2018-05-08 20:50:55

MiyoLinux
Replies: 0

For the latest versions of MiyoLinux (.iso date - 20180501)...

If you have enabled the CMST network manager to show in your system tray, you "might" notice that the background color may change periodically. I say "might", because it happens periodically on one of my computers, but it has never happened on the other. On the one that it does happen, it will sometimes have a transparent grayish/white background.

It's briefly documented in man cmst

Anyway, if you've experienced this, and you want it "fixed"...

1. While the background is normal, open the Run Command (or terminal) and enter...

yad --color

That will open the color chooser GUI provided by yad.

2. Click on the dropper icon (color chooser), and then click the background of the panel as close as you can to the network icon without clicking on the network icon itself.

The number for the color name will appear in the GUI. Either write it down, or copy it with your mouse, and you can then paste it in the next step.

3. Open the autostart file, and find the entry...

sleep 5 && cmst -m -i Papirus-Dark &

Now, we need to add an additional command to that. So, after "Papirus-Dark", add the following so that the line now looks like this...

sleep 5 && cmst -m -i Papirus-Dark --fake-transparency 3E5A32 &

PLEASE NOTE: Substitute the 6-digit color number above with your actual number. The one above is just an example color number...

4. Save and close the file.

Since the panel has transparency, you will probably have to change the 6-digit number anytime you change your wallpaper.

Thanks MiyoLinux. I already had the "ugly" installed but I needed the "bad." So it's now working. If you can remember how you found out it needed both these plugins, I'd appreciate knowing. I searched last night and came up empty. I did look at the dependencies listed in Synaptic, and I had them all. But gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad wasn't listed in Synaptic. Why would that be? It lists gstreamer1.0-plugins-base & gstreamer1.0-plugins-good. (Is there a gstreamer package that includes all this stuff so a user wouldn't have to download a bunch of different ones?

Thanks again.

You're very welcome! I'm just glad you have it working now!

Ron, I'll fess up here...I'm kind of like a savant. I just do things. I don't know how I know what to do, but they work. LOLOLOL!!! tongue

First thing I did was install the applet. Then I opened the terminal and ran...

alarm-clock-applet

That opened the applet on the Mate panel, but it didn't really tell me anything.

So...if memory serves me correctly (my rusty steel-trap), I played around with the GUI since I didn't know anything about it. Then, I tried playing an .mp3 file.

At this time, I'd like to announce that I tried playing the following .mp3 file..."Griffin Flight: by Gregoire Lourme". He has some great "Epic Music". Anyway...

I think...and I repeat that I think...a dialog window opened telling me that I was missing a gstreamer plugin. It didn't say which one I was missing; however, past experience with "missing gstreamer plugins" usually boils down to either the bad or ugly plugin...or both.

Edited to add: I can't answer why it didn't show "bad" as a missing dependency. Sorry.

#764 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Alarm Clock App » 2018-05-07 22:03:19

You're right, it's not working out of the box in Miyo; however, I just got it working...only tested with a .mp3 file on ASCII.

I don't remember what I did that showed me what was needed, but it said that I was missing a gstreamer plugin.

So, I installed both of the following packages. You might want to do them one at a time if you're not wanting packages on your system that you don't need. Also, it still didn't work until I rebooted for some reason.

Here are the two items that I installed...

gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad

Again...this was only tested with a .mp3 file on ASCII...and...you may not need both of those packages (and what comes with both of them).

Remember...Miyo is a base system, so it might take some exploring, trial and error, and who knows what to get your system how you want it. LOL! tongue

#765 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Alarm Clock App » 2018-05-07 21:13:37

There's an alarm-clock package available in ASCII...not sure about Jessie, and I know nothing about it. wink

Is this what you installed?

alarm-clock-applet

Good going on the startup sound. smile  I wasn't sure if alsa would play an .ogg file...I know it will play .wav files.

For LightDM to show your name so that you only need to enter your password...I'll use leafpad in the command. I can't remember the text editor in Mate, but you can substitute it for leafpad in the command...

1. Open the terminal, and enter...

sudo leafpad /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

2. When the file opens, scroll barely over half-way down until you see the following section under [Seat:*]...if you enable line numbers, it's line 86.

[Seat:*]
#type=xlocal
#pam-service=lightdm
#pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
#pam-greeter-service=lightdm-greeter
#xserver-command=X
#xmir-command=Xmir
#xserver-config=
#xserver-layout=
#xserver-allow-tcp=false
#xserver-share=true
#xserver-hostname=
#xserver-display-number=
#xdmcp-manager=
#xdmcp-port=177
#xdmcp-key=
#unity-compositor-command=unity-system-compositor
#unity-compositor-timeout=60
#greeter-session=example-gtk-gnome
#greeter-hide-users=false

I didn't include that whole section. The item you want to change is the last one in the code above...line number 105.

3. Remove the # from in front of greeter-hide-users=false

4. Save the file, close it, and reboot. It won't work with just a logout/login.

The first time you reach the login screen after doing this, it will show Other as the username. Just click it to choose your name instead. It will show your name at the login screen from then on.

Great!

Hey...if you decide you'd like to switch back to LightDM for any reason, let me know, and I'll tell you how to make your name show so that all you need to do is fill in your password in LightDM.

#769 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-05-06 17:22:28

That's good news! Indeed...thank you GNUser.  Might should add that to the Miyo Wiki in case others are experiencing that problem.

I saw another post about opening a file as administrator in Mate's file manager, but it's gone now? If you already solved it, great going!

If not, you'll need to install the following package...

mate-desktop-environment-extras

After installing that, the option to open as administrator appeared and worked.

Thanks for hanging in there Ron. I really wish that we could figure this out without a reinstall, but I'm not sure what else to do.

After playing around with Mate (and display managers), I decided to pull out the big guns and remove the other stock Miyo items...to see what effect that may possibly cause. After doing so, I still haven't experienced the delay that you described. When you reinstall...try doing what I did...

1. Install the package mate-desktop-environment

2. Remove openbox

3. See how things work for you after that. Try a few logouts and reboots. If everything seems good, then remove the remaining items...

Here's everything I removed afterwards...

lxtask
lxinput
lxrandr
leafpad
lxterminal
obsession
lxappearance
lxappearance-obconf
xfce4-power-manager
xfce4-power-manager-data
nitrogen
tint2
gmrun
gsimplecal
udevil
spacefm

4. After removing those, run the following command in your terminal...

sudo apt autoremove

5. ...and then fix the Slim login screen to meet your preference of booting straight into the password screen...

Good luck!

I'm actually kind'a enjoying this Mate desktop. Go figure... smile

For fun, I installed LightDM and switched to it. It has one issue; in that, when choosing "Restart" from the Shutdown menu in Mate, it only goes back to the login screen. I then had to use the Restart option there to restart the computer.

So...

Instead of trying to figure that out, I switched back to Slim. tongue

LOL!

#773 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-05-05 11:50:14

Okay...

Ron, I did a test install on a separate partition.

Not being familiar with Mate, I opened Synaptic to see what was available to give me the Mate desktop environment. I chose to install...

mate-desktop-environment

That pulled in everything Mate (as far as I could/can tell).

I then removed Openbox. (I didn't remove SpaceFM, Xfce stuff, or related Openbox stuff for this test)

I rebooted, and from login until reaching the desktop took about 6 - 8 seconds. Logged out and rebooted several times. I experienced no delays as you described from the time I logged in until reaching the desktop.

What did you install to give yourself the Mate desktop?

By the way, I bow to you for truly putting the "Miyo" in MiyoLinux! big_smile

#774 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-05-05 02:45:58

I was hoping that was the problem... tongue

LOLOLOLOL!!!

Okay, I'm nearing the end of my knowledge. I'm seriously wondering how much the deletion of Openbox and the change to Mate under the "still being developed Ascii" is influencing this; however, let's try one more thing...

1. Open the terminal, and enter...

sudo leafpad /etc/slim.conf

When the file opens, find the lines that read as...

# Session message. Prepended to the session name when pressing F1
# session_msg Session:

2. Remove the # from the second line, so that it now reads as...

# Session message. Prepended to the session name when pressing F1
session_msg Session:

3. Save the file, close it, and reboot.

4. Not sure if this will work going straight to the password screen of Slim, but when the login screen appears, hit the F1 key on your computer. Does something appear saying something similar to Session: Mate   ???

If not, hit F1 until it does. When Mate appears, then log in.

I'm also wondering if installing LightDM might be a possible fix for this, but I don't know. I'm at the end of my rope on it.

Great. This worked! But still have the very long login time. Is there anything I can check or do about it to help?

HOORAY!

I'm at a bit of a loss Ron. Let's do this...

If I understand, you've changed from Openbox to Mate.

Now...I've never used Mate. I've tried it before, but never used it. I don't care for Mate personally tongue , so I'm at a loss on what to do with it. However...

PLEASE UNDERSTAND...This is only a guess.

Open the file manager as root (if I understand correctly, you got rid of SpaceFM???), and go to /usr/share/xsessions

When you open that folder, do you have something in there for both Openbox and Mate?

If you still have an Openbox item, it may be causing the delay (?)...but I'm not sure. If it is still there, and you're not going to use Openbox, then delete it so that only Mate is there. Then reboot.
