Still beating that drum, alexkemp? Time to move on . . .

#552 Re: Installation » libelogind-compat has incompatible version » 2024-03-03 22:00:18

It is mandatory in Excalibur but if upgrading from Daedalus, the merge MUST be done BEFORE the upgrade or . . . consequences. Hope you can work it out. You might be able to fix it . . .

@stargate-sg1-cheyenne-mtn . . . Thanks! I learned a new word - agorism - which I will soon forget. All that wordiness makes my head spin! That being said I have lived my life very much on those principles not from being taught but from an inner "knowing". FWIW, I was advocating for Zero Population Growth in the 70s. I never understood the human urge to replicate. Fortunately, that was at a time when reproductive rights were a choice so could permanently protect myself from an oopsie. Not even a hint of regret. Just gratitude for the freedom to have a life of unlimited exploration . . .

#556 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » merged /usr » 2024-02-26 17:05:03

That depends on how and when the merge is activated as well as the non-standard choices made by the user prior to the merge. Please see this usrmerge announcement posted a few days ago.

Dear Friends and Software Freedom Lovers,

This announcement[1] looks to Devuan's future and also to its
beginnings in 2015.

Debian is proceeding with a full implementation of the merged usr file
structure[2] during this current testing cycle. In order to focus Devuan's
available resources on our primary purpose regarding systemd, Devuan
developers have decided it is in the project's best interest to implement
the usrmerge.

# Navigating the merged usr transition

  1. Daedalus/stable is the final Devuan release that will function without
merged usr.

  2. The safest way to migrate from Daedalus/stable to Excalibur/testing
is to first ensure there is sufficient disk space to accommodate the merge
and that you have made backups before proceeding.

  3. Only then install the usrmerge package BEFORE proceeding with the
normal dist-upgrade steps.

  4. This document will be updated to reflect future changes as needed.

# Happy Birthday Devuan!

This announcement also celebrates Devuan's 9th birthday as the first
pre-alpha ISO was gifted to us on Valentine's Day 2015. The iconic boot
screen[3] was created for the event. Devuan's journey has been and
continues to be a labor of Love for all of us. Love of Linux. Love of
freedom. And Love of everyone on Starship Devuan.

Note that the timing was also a prophetic salute to Leonard Nimoy
who died less than two weeks after the release.

May Devuan live long and prosper!

#559 Re: Installation » upgrade Chimaera with Daedelus? » 2024-02-18 18:15:18

Can't you just do it in a terminal? A disc shouldn't be needed for a dist upgrade. Or so I remember seeing on this forum. I have not done it myself that I can remember.

I am still on spinning rust . . . and at my age could very well have a lifetime supply in my stash . . .

How did garlic get into the joke thread? Do some posts need to be moved?

@herbie . . . Are you aware that there is an official Peppermint Devuan Edition?

Please don't take my observations personally. All too often I see humans, much like the fish chomping on a juicy worm hiding the hook, not getting quite what they bargained for. Over the years I have learned to curb my appetite and found it makes life much less complicated . . .

I use a generic usb Logitech K120 and  Dell PS/2 Ball Mouse. Nothing fancy but it "just works". Shiny new s*** is just a cash cow targeting gullible folks who fall for the hype . . .

Imagine rain flowing down a mountain. It does not flow in just one channel. There are many channels that branch off and form ponds or even lakes. So it is with our wanderings in space and time that have brought us together in the Devuan pond. It sustains a very unique collection of individuals the likes of which I have not encountered elsewhere in over 8 decades of searching . . .

I don't understand why anyone with connected brain-cells would touch facebook.  IOW the problem isn't Facebook because it is a CHOICE to use or not to use it.

But then . . . humans are egregiously lacking in self control and all too often end up screwing themselves by indulging in things they think they have to have . . .

The solution is to just say NO!

#569 Re: Other Issues » I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list » 2024-02-12 02:43:13

Did you actually create an account at https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/m … stinfo/dng? I think not because I just today I discovered that there is no trace of you in the DNG user list. You have to do that first. You will be sent a confirmation to which you have to reply. Then you will receive messages and when you submit your first post to be published to the list, it will go into moderation and I will OK it. Sorry it took so long to figure that out but this has never happened before.

#570 Re: Other Issues » I can read but not send to the DNG mailing list » 2024-02-11 15:33:57

@Mike . . . I was wondering about that too so I checked activity on the list directly. The last post to DNG was several days ago 2024-02-07. Traffic there is sometimes very active and sometimes non-existent though I can't remember it being this quiet before. Try posting a legitimate post to the list and see if that kicks it into gear.  wink

PS. Have you checked Spam?

#571 Re: Installation » Installing from src and apt » 2024-02-10 20:41:16

@Altoid . . . many years ago even I built a package using HowTo Build a Package from Source the Smart Way from the Debian forums. It is a classic and the last post was 2022 so I'm hopeful it might still work. Seems it has been adapted for python3 which is encouraging . . .

Sinking boat? Famous book? You lost me . . .

There are actually 3 options. You forgot about actually DOING SOMETHING besides talking about it.
