No  this isn't the case I think.
OK Trinity is KDE 3 actually, rebranded and maintained.
On the other hand, LXQt is nowhere near the KDE design (It reminds me LXDE of course and XFCE), but with a first test drive seems to me, both intuitive and productive.

Beyond that, If I was in mood for a mobile interface I was using Gnome, not a half baked solution of pre-Alpha quality (KDE or Plasma, or whatever name they're giving it nowadays).

Hi! :-)

I was using KDE for many ears (since the KDE 3 days).

Switching from Debian Jessie -> Devuan ASCII I installed KDE as usual.
This means of course, that I "upgraded" from KDE 4 -> 5.

Well...only to realize that today (4y. after KDE 5 release), KDE is at pre-Alpha quality.
KDE apps are still good (at least those who ported to 5), but the desktop itself (Plasma), although it uses a small amount of RAM, is completely useless for everyday's use.
At its release notes mentions that "due to change of behavior, we expect some of our users may abandon the project".
Some??? Seems like most of the developers are gone for good. Bugtracker is malfunctioning and the forum seems to be dead! Not to mention that most of KDE websites, are frozen back in time even from KDE 4 days.

Personally after using KDE 5 for the last months I'm completely fed up and I'm searching for alternative desktops to replace Plasma. Red Hat's announcement for dumping KDE wasn't a big surprise for me. Who wants Alpha testing for every day's use?

I'm test driving LXQt and Trinity for the time being.

LXQt (installed from repositories) seems a typical lightweight linux desktop built with Plasma 5, which is a good thing for running smoothly my already installed KDE apps.

Trinity (installed from its PPA for Debian), is the good old KDE 3, maintained by Trinity developers.
It has a few problems, that I expect to go away, with the Beowulf release (which will be officially supported by Trinity).
One minor concern of mine, is that Trinity is still based on QT 3 (maintained by Trinity) and the transition to newer QT versions has still to be completed.

Any opinions?
Any suggestion for other desktops?

PS. My apologies to KDE fans, but although I love KDE and I was using it since I came to Linux world from Windows (ages ago), I still need something stable for my primary desktop.
PS2. I strongly disagree with KDE devs try, to push down the users throat the mobile interface!

Here: /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

Its the  resume text file on the  /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/ directory.

I gave "kdesu kate" and opened it and changed the given UUID (from Devuan's installation time) -> none.
(The only line, this file have, is: RESUME=none).
I saved and exited Kate. Updated initramfs and voilà! :-)

@Giorgos you know every trick in the book. Could you please show me the XZ package you mentioned? https://pkginfo.devuan.org/ This one? https://pkginfo.devuan.org/stage/ascii/ … .2+b1.html
I thought the 7zip port was p7zip. Also, clamtk is a GUI for clamav (antivirus). What did you mean son?

Ooops!!!
Mea culpa. :-(

I copy-pasted the wrong name.
SORRY!!! :-)

I meant J7Z.
Homepage: http://j7z.xavion.name/
Last version: https://sourceforge.net/projects/k7z/fi … %29/1.4.1/

Infos about XZ archives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xz

I never installed xz utils (even from my Kubuntu days). They were always here, where I was in need for compressing something.
Then again, they may autoinstalled with some other package.
What ZIP manager (GUI) are you use?
Does it have XZ support?

EDIT:

xz-utils. This is the name of the package for XZ.
I think it comes preinstalled, if you choose base - console utilities.
If you have installed it, the GUI archiver , will offer the creation of a tar.xz archive.
Ark (which comes preinstalled with KDE), creates XZs, but without asking questions, assumes the compression to be "Normal".
That's why I replaced Ark with J7Z. (For creating "Ultra" compressed archives).

Of course, one can achieve the same results from console, but it takes too many switches to be convenient for me.

I will look into Tomb and Veracrypt.

Stick with Veracrypt. Stable and mature, multiport (so you can access the same container from Windows), easy to install, straightforward to use, it has them all! :-)
And don't be fooled by its simplicity. Its very powerful and lets you choose even rare algorithms to use (although all the default settings are OK).

If you have plenty of time and want to learn a more traditional Unix way to encrypt, try Tomb or Sirikali.
Its always pleasant to learn new things.

I agree with Pan!
Veracrypt, is the best option available.

PS. I was searching online and someone posted his opinion, that the best available online encryption, is going online not with your usual Linux installation, but creating a barebones VirtualBox installation, which it has to be encrypted, when not in use.
This way, you'll leave no tracks to your working system.

Hi! :-)

I have problem with Devuan's multimedia support.
Specifically playing videos. Although the more popular formats can be played without problem, I'm having difficulties with older or less popular formats.

At my Debian days, I was using Debian Multimedia repository (in order to deal with this issue).

What's Devuan's official policy about multimedia?
Does it suggest or support deb-multimedia.org?
What's your experience?
Are you satisfied with the out-of-the-box experience or were you in need for more codecs?

PS. I already gave  deb-multimedia a try and seems to work well.

#35 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » How do you encrypt files? » 2018-10-21 12:56:56

Single files?
When I was working in Windows I was using 7Z for this. Just create a 7Z archive pwd protected (amongst with its filelist).
At Linux I'm using XZ (the 7Z actually, Unix ported with support for file attributes).
For XZ GUI,I'm using J7Z.

Directories?
Veracrypt. It has an installer. You only have to add yourself to sudoers.
(At KDE, you can use KUser for dealing with users administration).

There's also a more native approach (based on kernel's cryptographic modules).
Give Sirikali a try and decide for yourself.
For backend, choose GocryptFS for a start. (You can download the binary and place it somewhere in your path).

#36 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Problem encrypting the swap partition with cryptsetup [SOLVED]. » 2018-10-20 12:35:37

The resume file, still holds the uuid of the unencrypted partition.
Seems like this is normal (according to the cryptsetup documentation, if I'm not wrong), since the uuid of the encrypted partition, changes to a different one, in every boot.

EDIT:

What needed was setting it to none.
RESUME=none

Of course (as root) you have to update initramfs:
# update-initramfs -u

Now everything's in place.
On next boot you won't be bothered with it.

Thanks for the solution and greets flies to the guys from cryptsetup maillist! ;-)

Hi! :-)

I tried cryptsetup for encrypting my swap and indeed I was successful, but I'm getting the message (at boot time): "gave up waiting for suspend/resume device"  (and the respective delay).

My initial crypttab (according to the FAQ) was: "cswap1        /dev/sda6    /dev/urandom    swap,cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=256,hash=sha1" and I even tried the options nodelay and noauto, bat they didn't make any difference.

Again, later on boot process I'm getting the message that cswap1 is mounted as swap and indeed the encrypted setup is fully functional after the bott process is finished.

Is it a bug?
Is there any way to avoid the "gave up..." error message or at least the delay on boot?
TIA!

#43 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Desktop resolution problem (AMD graphic card). » 2018-09-04 12:26:53

Hi! :-)

I searched around a bit and I'm back.

If someone faced a resolution problem the simpler way to deal with it is xrandr.
This page is the only thing you'll need: https://gist.github.com/debloper/2793261.

After setting it in order to avoid manually running it every time, you have to configure it to autostart.
I'm using KDE and it's easy enough to set it through KDE settings.

The problem is that way you'll still have the above mentioned bug with VTs.
Seems like it's a kernel bug with the name "kernel spamming".

Seems to be an upstream bug (from Debian) and all Debian forks have it (Ubuntu, Mint, Clonezilla etc).
Non-Debian distros don't suffer this specific bug.
I don't think it's relevant to create a bug report at Devuan's tracker (since Debian developers have to deal with it).

If you have a different opinion please tell me.

Personally I'm not in great need of VTs, so I'll stick with Devuan.
I'm not marking this thread as solved, because if someone needs VTs (or any console without X)...well...bad luck! :-)

#44 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Desktop resolution problem (AMD graphic card). » 2018-06-13 16:57:21

THANKS golinux! :-)
Indeed this did the trick!
(at least partially).

If someone reads this pos and needs details, this page is particuilarly helpful:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … vailable-i.

The only problem is that it neither apply the settings (you have to go to KDE control panel and set the new resolution), nor remember them after logging off.

I made a scipt for autorunning the mentioned commands after logging in, but the inconvinience is that you have after every sigle login, to go to control panel and set the desired resolution (since xrandr doesn't do it from console).

Is there any config file somewhere, so I won't need to do the manual work after every single login?

#45 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Desktop resolution problem (AMD graphic card). » 2018-06-13 15:40:39

Last time I boot, startup output clearly stated (unlike the previous boots) that kernel needed the firmware-amd-graphics package (as you suggested), so I installed it (and xserver-xorg-video-radeon got autoinstalled too).
Seems like my card (R3 series) is at the supported list.

Now, after the restart, I'm getting the message that my monitor has no or invalid EDID (and resolution is still stuck at 1024X768).

Seems (altough I'm not sure) like I have to create an Xorg.conf, but I have about a decade to get my hands to it.

Any ideas - directions??? :-)
There are many sugestions online, but does someone tried them on Devuan?

Not only searched but contacted with the AMD support. Other guys posted to their fora (so I skip this step).
That was happened last summer.

To make a long story sort, the proprietary driver (as I stated above), can't anymore be installed, because it demands an outdated X-Window version.
It is highly unlike that AMD will update this driver. Seems to be dead in the water.
Company's efforts are now for the new driver, which supports only high-end cards.

Before a year or so, a guy made an Arch fork, and bundled the last working X-Window version (replacing the normal one), with fglrx.

Pretty good solution, as a temporary one, but you know what?......nowadays Arch means.....SystemD!
NO WAY!!! :-)

My resolution is at 1024X768, while the native one of my monitor, is 1360X768.
(I have an older Samsung TFT).

Back at my Debian days, I had the proprietary AMD driver (fglrx), but I think this is not available any more.
I'm totally unfamiliar with the open source one.

Ehm...What now?
Does someone knows how a can configure the driver, in order to get an acceptable resolution?
