I was totally unaware about this, since pulse is set by default in Debian I was convinced audio was handled by it even in Devuan.

While I am not an expert, what I see is not a technical reason but instead an Ubuntu employ that needs to follow an internal agenda and he is steering Debian toward Ubuntu needs. Also the attitude in the communication sounds corporative-style.

Perhaps this change requires more involvement, perhaps there was already a committee (and I missed it); but even though he is the APT leader, he is touching a place that involves all the other maintainers:

If you maintain a port without a working Rust toolchain,
please ensure it has one within the next 6 months, or
sunset the port.

Are they trying to decimate thousand of packages?
Ubuntu has interest in it; it does already only taking care of a subset of the original Debian repositories and throw all the rest into universe; lesser package to handle is lesser burden.

Besides, in my insignificant experience, every time I need to compile some software in GO or RUST, their constantly requires tons of libraries that are external to Debian, it is going to be the same? Will Debian have a few components that will temporarily download external libraries in order to compile each package?

However I am not sure I want go that route, it is easier using my phone as access point and connect my workstation to the laptop through RDP...

I was totally convinced that Debian was interested in keeping alive the legacy of a non-systemd distribution, this is something that a Devuan folk wrote me on this very forum, not in my terms but there were some collaboration and contribution upstream to make the work on Devuan easier and simultaneously allowing Debian to change init effortlessly.

Not sure whats wrong with XFCE4 but I use daily Window Manager and I really enjoy, although is hard to customize and GTK3/4 apps did not fits well ... If you like something that does a little bit more than a drawing a window you may also try Fluxbox.

My (old) laptop was already slow back to that time. I bought it just because was one the very first shipped with Linux (SLES) in Italy and was cheap too. Today is useless, even with 6GB of RAM and a SSD, the CPU is a crap. Nothing to add.

I want to confirm that with netplug is working very well!

If I unplug the cable the connection does not drop at all, looks like magic!

The usb0 interface must be raised up manually and even if you unplug it you must run again dhclient usb0 but this is just fine, not a big a deal at all!

What is really working poorly is ifplugd, it dramatically slows down the boot process and when you unplug and plug again the cable nothing happens I have to manually force the interfaces to regain their status...

Avoid to use ifplugd for me it is just better!
