I always boot to console mode and run startx if I want the gui, in
which case I use a mouse. I often drop back to console mode via Xfce
logout.
The touchpad has permanently been disabled for the X environment using
the Xfce Device Manager. Alas, the touchpad stays enabled in console
mode, before startx and after xfce logout.
There is no obvious way to disable the touchpad in BIOS. How can I
permanently disable it for console mode?
